Courtney, Eurton, Gaudet, And Yu To Host Eclipse Awards On Feb. 10 At Santa Anita

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters (NTWAB) announced today that preeminent broadcast talent Acacia Courtney, Britney Eurton, Gabby Gaudet and Michelle Yu will host the 51st Annual Eclipse Awards on Thursday, Feb. 10 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

The Eclipse Awards, which honors the 2021 champions of Thoroughbred racing, will be held in California for the first time since 2012. Winners in 17 horse and human categories will be announced at Santa Anita and live on TVG, and other outlets, beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The evening will culminate with the announcement of the 2021 Horse of the Year.

Courtney, Eurton and Gaudet began hosting the Eclipse Awards ceremony together in 2020. Yu joins as a host for the first time.

Courtney is in her sixth year as a handicapper and paddock reporter for Gulfstream Park's simulcast feed. She also works with the New York Racing Association and is one of the hosts of the popular show America's Day at the Races, and a paddock reporter for Saratoga Live, both on FOX Sports. A native of Connecticut, Courtney began riding at the age of eight, training in the hunter-jumper and dressage disciplines.

In 2011, Courtney founded the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Racing for Home, Inc., which she runs with her mother, Sherrie. Accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, Racing for Home is dedicated to retraining and re-homing Off-Track Thoroughbreds for new careers after the track.

Eurton serves as a reporter and host for many of horse racing's largest events through her continuing work with TVG Network and NBC Sports, including the Triple Crown, Royal Ascot, and the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Eurton began her broadcasting career in 2014 with TVG Network, where she covers Thoroughbred racing across the U.S. and internationally.

Eurton, who made her NBC Sports debut in June 2017 on the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, worked her first Triple Crown for NBC Sports in 2018 and was a co-host for the network's coverage of Royal Ascot in 2019. She resides in Los Angeles and is a graduate of the University of Southern California. She is the daughter of Peter Eurton, a former jockey and accomplished Thoroughbred trainer.

Gaudet grew up in a horse racing family as her parents, Linda and the late Eddie Gaudet, were trainers in the Mid-Atlantic region. She began her career as a racing analyst and paddock reporter for the Maryland Jockey Club in 2013 and from there went on to cover horse racing nationally at Arlington Park, the Breeders' Cup, and at Gulfstream Park. In 2016, she joined the New York Racing Association's broadcast team as a racing analyst and reporter.

In 2019, Gaudet joined TVG on a year-round basis as an analyst and reporter covering premier racing including the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet, Keeneland and Churchill Downs. In addition to being part of the Keeneland team in April as co-host of “Today at Keeneland” and as paddock commentator, Gaudet expanded her responsibilities with the track to include U.S. sales representation and recruitment. Gaudet is married to trainer Norm Casse. Her sister, Lacey Gaudet, is also a trainer.

Yu is currently a member of the award-winning Santa Anita Park simulcast team. An avid horsewoman from a young age, Yu's first foray onto the backside was as a hotwalker before moving onto TV production. Eventually this landed her in front of the camera as an analyst and presenter. After nearly two decades in the industry, her resume includes FOX, Breeders' Cup, HRTV, TVG and various international shows. Yu is married to Santa Anita based trainer Ryan Hanson and they have two children, Olivia (5) and Spencer (3). Still involved in horses daily, Yu assists in yearling pretraining and is also an owner.

The Eclipse Awards are named after the great 18th-century racehorse and foundation sire Eclipse, who began racing at age five and was undefeated in 18 starts, including eight walkovers. Eclipse sired the winners of 344 races, including three Epsom Derbies.

New Jersey Commission Issues Fines, Suspensions To Trainers Potts, Lucas, Richards

The New Jersey Racing Commission issued a bevy of suspensions and fines on Friday, Jan. 21, according to the Association of Racing Commissioners International's regulatory page, including for trainers Wayne Potts, Bonnie Lucas, and Marvin Richards.

Trainer Marvin Richards was issued a $5,000 fine and suspended for one year (May 7, 2022 through and including May 6, 2023) for a post-race test of Awesomenewyear, winner of the sixth race at Monmouth Park on Sept. 3, 2021. The post-race sample was positive for oxazepam (a sedative designed to treat anxiety, anxiety with depression, and symptoms of alcohol withdrawal) and ibuprofen (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory), a violation of N.J.A.C 13:70-14A.1(b) (substances foreign to the natural horse) and 13:70-14A.6 (absolute insurer rule).

Awesomenewyear was disqualified from that victory, and the Horseman's Bookkeeper was ordered to redistribute purse money. Richards incurred 2.5 multiple medication violation points.

Trainer Wayne Potts and his assistant Bonnie Lucas were each fined $1,000 and suspended for 30 days (from May 7, 2022 through and including June 5, 2022) over a ruling initially issued on Sept. 18, 2021. The text for that ruling indicates that Potts' trainee Chispita finished second in the fourth race at Monmouth Park on Aug. 6, 2021, and the state veterinarian ordered that that she be vanned off the track in the equine ambulance. Potts ordered his licensed assistant, Bonnie Lucas, to not allow the horse to be vanned off. The state veterinarian voided a claim on Chispita for that Aug. 6 race; the filly has not run since.

The fine and suspension stem from violations of the following rules:

N.J.A.C. 13:70-1.15 – The stewards may fine, suspend or rule off any person who in their opinion has acted to the detriment of racing or violated the rules.
N.J.A.C. 13:70-14.13 – Every association, all officials and employees thereof, and all persons licensed in any capacity by the Commission shall give every possible cooperation, aid and assistance to any department, bureau, division, officer, agent or inspector, or any other person connected with the United States Government, or with the State of New Jersey, who may be investigating or prosecuting any matter involving a violation of any law, or any rules or regulations of the Commission. Failure to cooperate will subject the person or persons involved to a fine, suspension or both.

Additional rulings included:

A $1,000 fine issued to trainer Peter Walder after Briella's first-place finish in the seventh race on Sept. 4 at Monmouth. The post-race sample showed the presence of aminocaproic acid (Amicar); Briella was ordered disqualified.
A $500 fine issued to trainer Jose D'Angelo after his trainee Avenida Manana' first-place finish in the seventh race on Sept. 18 at Monmouth. The post-race sample showed the presence of 5-hydroxydantrolene (dantrolene), and was ordered disqualified.

History On the Line in Stewards’ Cup

Reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty (Aus) (Medaglia d'Oro) is already the owner of one local record, having become the winningest horse in Hong Kong history when easily defending his title in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile six weeks ago. The 6-year-old looms a dominant favourite when he goes in search of a second consecutive victory in Sunday's G1 Stewards' Cup over his pet distance and two more records lie straight ahead.

The Hong Kong Mile was win number 19 from 20 starts and not only took him to within a couple of Group 1 wins of shattering the all-time earnings mark of Beauty Generation (NZ) (Road to Rock {Aus})–who retired with HK$106 million in the bank–but also marked his 16th consecutive trip to the winner's circle dating back some 930 days to July 2019. Should he salute on Sunday, he will equal the winning streak set by the legendary Silent Witness (Aus) (El Moxie) as his own legend continues to grow.

Golden Sixty will race third-up in the Stewards' Cup and has been given a reasonably quiet time since the international Mile, finishing third to Group 1-winning sprinter Wellington (Aus) (All Too Hard {Aus}) in a 1000-metre trial Jan. 4 before being topped off with some easy hit-outs on the grass.

If connections are feeling any pressure, it isn't showing.

“There's no record in my mind at the moment, just focusing on the race,” jockey Vincent Ho told the HKJC notes team. “He's been working well. I'm looking forward to it. It's another small field. At the age of six, I think he's better than even before– mentally and physically.”

Golden Sixty's challengers include last-out Group 3 winner Healthy Happy (Aus) (Zoustar {Aus}) and Mile runner-up More Than This (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), while G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup third Russian Emperor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) will be using this as a prep for next month's G1 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000mT).

In the afternoon's co-featured event, Sky Field (Aus) (Deep Field {Aus}), who took the tragedy-filled G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint last month, goes for a Group 1 double in the Centenary Sprint Cup, where he will face Wellington, who lost all chance when miraculously avoiding the spill in the Sprint; defending champion Hot King Prawn (Aus) (Denman {Aus}); undefeated Master Eight (Aus) (Oamaru Force {Aus}); and the flighty Courier Wonder (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}).

Vero Amore, Dam Of Champion Vequist, Dies Of Colic

Tom and Sue McGrath's Swilcan Stables reported this morning that the graded stakes-placed mare Vero Amore died Thursday night, Jan. 20, due to complications from colic while in foal to Nyquist and carrying a full sibling to Vequist, winner of the 2020 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and that year's Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly.

“I am so sorry to announce the passing of Vero Amore,” McGrath said. “She was an amazing competitor and an equally amazing mare. Needless to say, we are devastated.”

A 2011 mare by Mineshaft out of Summers Edge, by The Cliff's Edge, Vero Amore finished second for trainer Robert Reid Jr. in the $500,000 Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in 2014, beaten just neck by multiple Grade 1 winner Stopchargingmaria. Bred in Kentucky by Robert LaPenta and campaigned by Swilcan Stables, Vero Amore amassed earnings of $252,255 while hitting the board in 11 of 16 lifetime starts during her splendid racing career.

A blue-hen mare for Swilcan Stables, Vero Amore is the dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Vequist, who captured the G1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga prior to annexing the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies to secure her championship. Bred by Swilcan Stables and owned by Swilcan Stables in partnership with Gary Barber and Wachtel Stable, Vequist earned $1,237,500 before selling to Spendthrift Farm for $3.4 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Mixed Sale.

Vero Amore also produced Mainstay, a daughter of Astern (AUS) who was named a TDN Rising Star following a sparkling 7 3/4-length maiden special weight triumph in her career debut for Swilcan Stables and LC Racing at Monmouth Park in 2021, and she has a promising 2-year-old filly by Daredevil named Vedareo who will seek to continue the family's winning ways.
