Notable US-Bred & -Sired Runners in Japan: Feb. 5 & 6, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Tokyo and Chukyo Racecourses, the second of which hosts the oft-productive G3 Kisaragi Sho for the classic crop of 2022:

A $335K purchase as a weanling at Fasig-Tipton November in 2019, the Apr. 19 foal is a half-brother to GISW Marley's Freedom (Blame) and SW Noble Charlotte (Include) and hails from the female family of GISW Noble Bird (Birdstone). LOGI MUSTANG (JPN) (f, 3, Frosted–Luvthatmustang, by Candt Ride {Arg}) was produced by a daughter of MGSW & GISP Proposed (Benchmark) and was acquired in utero for $175K at Keeneland November in 2018. From the extended Wygod family of GSW Prospect Park (Tapit) from the same sire line, Logi Mustang was offered as a yearling at the JRHA Select Sale in 2020, hammering for $140,315. B-Araki Farm

11th-CKO, G3 Kisaragi Sho-G3, ¥76.6m ($664k), 3yo, 2000mT
AIR ANEMOI (c, 3, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) overcame a wide draw and led ever step of the way to earn his diploma by three lengths going this distance at Hanshin Dec. 19 (video, SC 9). The May 7 foal is the latest promising runner for his dam, who is also responsible for Japanese Group 2 winner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}), a winner of four races in Japan and Air Amemoi's full-brother Air Sage, a three-time winner from just five starts. Nokaze is herself a half-sister to Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), the stakes-winning dam of Yuugiri (Shackleford), a latest second in the GII Golden Rod S. in November who could make her 3-year-old debut in graded company at Oaklawn over the coming weeks. Saudi Cup The Perfect Swansong For Breeders’ Cup Distaff Winner Marche Lorraine

Leading Japanese trainer Yoshito Yahagi has revealed The Saudi Cup was the first thing on his mind when Marche Lorraine won the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Del Mar last November.

Despite a possibility that the six-year-old mare would retire after her success in California, connections were keen to run one more time – and the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 26 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh will provide the setting for her send-off.

The Japanese superstar recently returned to full training ahead of her Saudi Cup mission and she will join some of the best dirt horses on the planet contesting the nine-furlong race.

Last year's winner Mishriff, Japan Champions Cup winner T O Keynes, and the highly-progressive US-trained Mandaloun are just a few of her potential rivals, with entries from America, Europe, South America and Asia.

Speaking about the decision to run in The Saudi Cup, Yahagi said: “It was immediately after the Breeders' Cup Distaff… I thought The Saudi Cup should be her next race if she ran one more time. There was a possibility that Marche Lorraine would retire after the Breeders' Cup.

“She needed to have a period to relieve fatigue and spent an easy time at the Shigaraki Branch of Northern Farm. She returned to my barn at Ritto Training Centre on Jan. 27.”

Three-time Japanese Champion Trainer, Yahagi, was surprised by Marche Lorraine's win in America, but hopes that she can run to that level again in Riyadh and achieve a similar send off to Loves Only You, who followed her Del Mar win with a triumphant final outing in the Hong Kong Cup.

He said: “With regard to the Filly & Mare Turf, I thought Loves Only You had enough ability to win the race, and I was deeply moved to become the first Japanese trainer to win a race at the Breeders' Cup. It was kind of a surprise – even for me – to watch Marche Lorraine win the Distaff to be frankly honest.

“First of all, I want her to complete the race safely, as she will be a mother soon. While I understand the competition is very tough, I hope she performs well enough, like at the Breeders' Cup.”

Juddmonte Reveals 2022 Mating Plans; Enable To Visit Dubawi

For the 2022 breeding season Juddmonte will be utilizing over 30 different stallions, with the home roster getting its usual strong support.

Frankel's book includes the group and listed winners Alocasia (a half-sister to G2 winner Set Piece), Capla Temptress (G1 winner), Classical Times (a half-sister to Newspaperofrecord), Environs (a half-sister to Frankel's G3 winning son Delaware), Grand Jete, Soffia, Starformer (the dam of listed winner Flavius) and Winsili (G1 winner).

He is also covering the proven producers Bird Flown (dam of G1 winner Siskin), Portodora (dam of the aforementioned Alocasia and Set Piece), Ruscombe (dam of Frankel's listed winning daughter Petricor, who is now in training with Bill Mott), and Scuffle (the dam of Logician). He is also covering the blacktype performer Peace Charter – who is a daughter of multiple G1 winner Emollient and therefore a half-sister to the very promising Frankel filly Raclette.

Kingman had another stellar season in 2021 – Palace Pier, Schnell Meister and Domestic Spending winning six G1 races between them last year, and he will be represented by over 190 beautifully-bred 2-year-olds this year.

His book of mares mirrors his standing as one of the world's best sires and includes G1 winners Emulous, Juliet Foxtrot, Quadrilateral and Samba Inc, and proven producers Flare Of Firelight (dam of G2 winner Threat), Mirror Lake (dam of G2 winner Imaging), Nimble Thimble (dam of the aforementioned Quadrilateral) and Trojan Queen (dam of G3 winner Sangarius); and young group/graded-winning mares Dandhu, Gaining, Isabella Giles, Lucky Kristale (a half-sister to Love), Nay Lady Nay (a sister to Arizona), Pocket Square and Sun Maiden (a half-sister to Midday).

2022 will see the first runners hit the track for the top-class 2-year-old/miler Expert Eye (whose dam is visiting Mehmas) and Juddmonte are continuing their strong support of the son of Acclamation.

The mares going to him include the G2 winning-miler Modern Look (dam of the G3 winner/G1 placed Grand Jete), listed winner Pavlosk, Showcasing's blacktype sister Tendu, and her winning Frankel filly Beheld. Tendu is a daughter of Oasis Dream, the sire of the European champion 2-year-old Native Trail, and amongst others he will cover the G1 winner Announce, G3 winner Hot Snap (a half-sister to Oasis Dream's outstanding daughter Midday) and the winning Frankel filly Wensleydale, whose dam is the Group-winning sprinter Divine.

Bated Breath will be standing for a career-high £15,000 this season and his mares include Photographic (the dam of G3 winner Shutter Speed) as well as the listed winners Variable and Zaminast (a half-sister to Famous Name), the young group-placed mare Midweek, and Star Snap, who is a Galileo daughter of the G3 winner Hot Snap.

Other homebred stallions being supported include New Bay who is covering the Listed winner Heliac amongst others; Showcasing, whose mares include G1 winner African Rose (dam of Fair Eva and relative of Native Trail), Continental Drift (a daughter of Intercontinental and dam of Listed winner Masen) and Deliberate (dam of G2 winners Headman and Projected, the latter by Showcasing); and Time Test, whose book includes Across The Floor, the dam of Irish G3 winner Acanella.

Time Test's dam, the G1 winner Passage Of Time, is one of several mares visiting Dubawi – other mares include Enable (along with her half-sister Entitle and dam Concentric), Frankel's sister Chiasma, and Frankel's black type winning daughters Fount (G3 winner out of multiple G1 winner Ventura, who herself visits Night Of Thunder), Mori (listed winner out of Midday) and Obligate (G2 winner and a granddaughter of Hasili).

Joyeuse, a half-sister to Frankel, will visit Camelot, while her daughter Jovial will visit Wootton Bassett (along with Enable's half-sister Portrush and Banks Hill's G1-winning daughter Romantica).

Joyeuse's other daughter Jubiloso is visiting Sea The Stars, along with Bated Breath's G1-winning daughter Viadera.

Viadera's dam Sacred Shield is one of two G1-producers visiting Siyouni, the other being Juliet Foxtrot's dam Kilo Alpha.

Siyouni's Gr.1-winning son St Mark's Basilica will be covering the G1 winners Midday and Timepiece.

G1 winner Proviso will visit Lope De Vega, along with G3 winner Big Break (the dam of listed winner Georgeville).

Matings which produced talented 2-year-olds last year are being repeated – with Straight Answer's dam Straight Thinking returning to Kodiac – and Juncture's dam Occurrence visiting Dark Angel again.

Eclipse Finalist Shedaresthedevil Returns To Work Tab; Azeri Remains First Target In 2022

Millionaire multiple Grade 1 winner Shedaresthedevil, among three finalists for an Eclipse Award as the country's champion older dirt female of 2021, returned to the work tab last Sunday at Fair Grounds, covering 3 furlongs in :36.20 for trainer Brad Cox and co-owner Staton Flurry of Hot Springs, Ark.

Cox reiterated Tuesday afternoon that Shedaresthedevil's first 2022 target remains the $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles March 12 at Oaklawn. Shedaresthedevil opened her 2021 campaign with a victory in the Azeri, holding off expected Eclipse Award winner Letruksa by a head under regular rider Florent Geroux.

“It was a good move,” Cox said, referring to Sunday's breeze. “Pointing for the Azeri. I think it's going to be a realistic goal to get to the Azeri. Obviously, it's a prep for the Apple Blossom.”

Shedaresthedevil hasn't started since a sixth-place finish in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Nov. 6 at Del Mar. Shedaresthedevil, as a racing/broodmare prospect, sold for $5 million at Fasig-Tipton's Fall Mixed Sale Nov. 9, but her new connections decided to keep her in training with Cox for a 2022 racing campaign.

Flurry said the 5-year-old daughter of Daredevil received a 30-day break following the Breeders' Cup and was in light training at new co-owner Mandy Pope's farm in Florida before returning to Cox in early January at Fair Grounds.

“They had her in Ocala, Mandy Pope's team did, and she came back and looked amazing,” Cox said. “She looked as well as she's ever looked, so I'm excited about getting her started this year and hopefully make her presence felt in some Grade 1s throughout the year.”

The Azeri is the final major local prep for the $1 million Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at 1 1/16 miles April 23.

In addition to the Azeri, Shedaresthedevil won the $300,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3) for 3-year-old fillies in 2020 at Oaklawn before capturing the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) later that year at Churchill Downs. She was a finalist for an Eclipse Award as the country's champion 3-year-old filly of 2020.

Shedaresthedevil has bankrolled $2,331,458 after winning 9 of 17 career starts. She is a three-time Grade 1 winner.
