Regal Glory Gives Brown Record Fifth Jenny Wiley

Peter Brant's 'TDN Rising Star' Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom) got the jump on stablemate Shantisara (Ire) (Coulsty {Ire}) with three-sixteenths of a mile remaining in Saturday's GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland and dug in gamely to hold off her younger rival to prevail, providing trainer Chad Brown with a record fifth Jenny Wiley win, all since 2015. Brown overtook his mentor Bobby Frankel and Hall of Famer Bill Mott with the win.

“I'm a lucky guy with owners like Mr. Brant and plenty before him that have sent me a lot of nice fillies, and I had a great teacher [the late Hall of Famer trainer Bobby Frankel],” Brown said. “I just read yesterday I'm tied with Bobby's record, and I was thinking of him walking down here. I spent a few Jenny Wileys in the paddock with him when I was working for him and he taught me a lot. Luckily, I've had the horses and the team to work with these horses.”

Off a half-step slow, Regal Glory tugged Jose Ortiz up into second to press pacesetting Navratilova (Medaglia d'Oro) as Shantisara and Flavien Prat enjoyed the run of the race from a rail-skimming and joint third. Felt for three-eighths of a mile from home, Regal Glory claimed the front-runner with ease a furlong and a half out and kicked home a strong winner.

Shantisara was asked for her best in upper stretch and launched one final desperate inside bid, but fell short. 'TDN Rising Star' Lady Speightspeare (Speightstown) overcame a slow start to pick up third money.

A three-time graded winner for the late Paul Pompa, Jr., Regal Glory topped the Pompa dispersal at Keeneland January in 2021 on Brant's bid of $925,000. Dam Mary's Follies, who is also responsible for dual G1 February S. hero Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah), was sold to the BBA Ireland for $500,000 at the same event.

Regal Glory, three-for-five last year topped by a win in Del Mar's GI Matriarch S. Nov. 28, kicked off her 6-year-old campaign in style with a win in Gulfstream's GIII TAA Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational S. Jan. 29. Her loaded resume also includes wins in the 2019 GII Lake Placid S. and GIII Lake George S.; the 2020 GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf S.; and a runner-up finish in last year's GI First Lady S. at Keeneland.

“I especially want to thank Mr. Brant for not only stepping up and buying her here at Keeneland out of the dispersal for Mr. Pompa, another dear friend and client of ours,” Brown said. “It was [Brant's] call to keep her in training this year. I probably would have bred her, and he said, 'No, she's in good form and I want to see her run another year. I have a feeling this is her year,' and so far he's right.”

Brown continued, “She's extremely competitive. She knows where that wire is, and with Shantisara–that's a real horse running at her. For [Regal Glory] to hold her off and to show she can get a mile and a sixteenth twice now. It looks like she could even go a little bit farther.”

Pedigree Notes:

Team Valor homebred champion Animal Kingdom is truly a product of the world. By a Brazilian-bred stallion and out of a German-bred mare, he won the GI Kentucky Derby in the U.S., the G1 Dubai World Cup in the U.A.E., raced in England, and has now stood in North America, Australia, and Japan. The only continents he lacks a connection to are Africa and Antarctica.

While Animal Kingdom's first Japanese foals are just yearlings, he left 10 black-type winners and four graded winners from his North American crops. He has three Grade I winners in the U.S.: Regal Glory, Oleksandra (Aus), and Duopoly, while his Untamed Domain is a Grade II winner who was runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
Both Regal Glory and Animal Kingdom's Australian multiple listed stakes winner Mystery Miss (Aus) are out of More Than Ready mares, with the pair being two of More Than Ready's 131 stakes winners out of his daughters.

Mary's Follies, a MGSW who sold at the 2021 Keeneland January sale for $500,000 to BBA Ireland while in foal to Curlin, is not only the dam of Regal Glory, but also of Japanese MG1SW Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) and U.S. MGSW Night Prowler (Giant's Causeway). She lost the Curlin foal she was carrying in 2021, but has the 2-year-old colt Ready to Connect (Connect), who sold at OBS March for $180,000 to Chad Schumer after working a furlong in :10.1, and a full-brother to Cafe Pharoah born Feb. 26.

Regal Glory's ninth dam is the Man o'War mare Warrior Lass, whose daughters included the dams of 1971 Broodmare of the Year Iberia (dam of champion and Kentucky Derby winner Riva Ridge), 1944 Belmont S. winner Bounding Home, and 1951 Preakness S. winner Bold.

Campanelle Exudes Class in Giant’s Causeway

Stonestreet Stables LLC's Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) touched 3-2 in the final stages of the wagering for Saturday's Listed Giant's Causeway S. at Keeneland, but drifted all the way out to 19-10 and asserted her class to post her third career black-type success in stakes-record time.

Away fairly, the 190,000gns Tattersalls October acquisition settled in fifth position and raced a touch keen three off the inside into the turn. Going well on the turn, she was eased out into the four path at the quarter, was shaken up and hit the front with a little less than a furlong to race and pulled away to take it by about two lengths in the stakes-record time of 1:01.98. 'TDN Rising Star' Star Devine (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) sat a perfect inside trip and kicked on to be second.

Winner of the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot in 2020, Campanelle added a two-length success in Deauville's G1 Prix Morny, but failed to see out the mile when fourth in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. Second past the post in last year's G1 Commonwealth Cup at the Royal meeting, the bay was put up to the victory, but was a disappointing 12th in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in August and was a quietly ridden third in this track's GIII Franklin County S. when last seen Oct. 15.

While it has been an uncharacteristically quiet beginning to the Keeneland meet with his 2-year-olds, trainer Wesley Ward is quickly snapping up the turf stakes, having saddled Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) in the GII Shakertown S. last Saturday and Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}) in Friday's Limestone S. Janney Homebred Posts Flashy Keeneland Allowance Win

5th-Keeneland, $109,450, Alw, 4-16, (NW1X), 3yo, 1 1/16mT, 1:43.75, gd, neck.
LIMITED LIABILITY (c, 3, Kitten's Joy–Hold Harmless, by Blame) had just one rival beat for the opening six furlongs of his July 31 debut over the Saratoga turf, only to shoot past the rest of his rivals to graduate by 2 3/4 good-looking lengths. A pace-compromised third as the odds-on choice behind Coinage (Tapit) in the Sept. 1 GIII With Anticipation S. at the Spa, the homebred raced handier to the speed in the Oct. 3 GII Pilgrim S. at Belmont, but could do no better than third. Adding Lasix for this 3-year-old unveiling, Limited Liability was off at a very generous 4-1 and immediately dropped out the back as they went a moderate clip up front. Held together on the turn and still last as they raced inside the final quarter of a mile, the gray was switched out and covered his final 2 1/2 furlongs in a slick :28.57 per Trakus to take best 5-1 Freedom's Way (Declaration of War) by a deceptively comfortable margin. Favored Credit Event (Not This Time) saved ground for the opening six panels and was ridden for luck by Tyler Gaffalione in the stretch, but he was hopelessly locked away passing midstretch and never recovered, finishing 10th. Limited Liability is out of a winning full-sister to GSW Onus, whose daughter Gun Boat (Wait A While) was placed in the grassy Wait a While S. last year at two. The colt's third dam includes MGSW/GISP Ironicus (Distorted Humor),MGSW On Leave (War Front) and GSWs Norumbega (Tiznow), Hunting (Coronado's Quest) and Quiet Harbor (Silver Deputy). Ribchester’s Ruthin Prevails in the Limestone

Ruthin (GB) (Ribchester {Ire}) led home a 'TDN Rising Star' 1-3 finish in Friday's co-featured TVG Limestone S. at Keeneland, as she turned away a bid from her pace-pressing and favored stablemate, fellow 'Rising Star' Her World (Ire) (Caravaggio) and held off a late dive from Derrynane (Quality Road) for a narrow victory.

So quickly into stride that jockey John Velazquez reported post-race that he surged back in the irons, Ruthin, a six-length graduate in a course-and-distance maiden 51 weeks ago to become the first winner for her sire, cut out the running, but was kept in about the four path through an opening couple of furlongs in :22.59. Fractionally closer to the fence as they raced around the turn, Ruthin held the advantage, but there was plenty of room at the inside for stablemate Her World–herself a debut victress against the boys in the Tyro S. at Monmouth last August–if good enough when push came to shove. Try as she might, the gray filly just could not bridge the gap and the wire came in the nick of time for Ruthin. Derrynane, a late-running fourth to Stonestreet's Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}) in last year's GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, switched off at the back, was produced in upper stretch and attacked the line hard to just miss.

Seventh of 27 as the 3-1 favorite in last year's Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot, Ruthin could return to that meeting, pending a dinner discussion with Barbara Banke, trainer Wesley Ward said.

The second stakes scorer for her G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Queen Anne-winning sire (by Iffraaj {GB}), Ruthin was the most expensive of the Darley stallion's first-crop yearlings when hammering to Ben McElroy on behalf of Stonestreet for 350,000gns at Tattersalls October in 2020. The dual stakes-winning Selinka is also the dam of a yearling colt by G2 Richmond S. hero Land Force (Ire) (No Nay Never).
