Uncle Mo Colt Romps To ‘Rising Star’-dom

Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt and partners appear to have another potential monster on their hands, as Gulfport (c, 2, Uncle Mo–Fame and Fortune, by Unbridled's Song) ran away from his rivals to graduate by seven lengths at first asking at Churchill Downs to become the afternoon's second 'TDN Rising Star' and the 10th overall for his successful stallion.

Pounded into 1-2 favoritism with a best-of-63 half-mile from the gate in :46 flat at Keeneland on display, the $275,000 Fasig-Tipton July acquisition by Joe Pickerell and Courtney Roberts's Pick View LLC bounced well and improved from his wide draw to prompt the pace of 12-1 overlay Mataro (Maclean's Music x Lady Tak) to that one's outside through the opening quarter-mile in :22.35. Asked to claim that front-runner as they cornered into the stretch, Gulfport surged past and was ridden mostly hands and heels for the remainder, pulling clear with every one of his powerful strides while covering his final furlong in a strong :11.84. The Heiligbrodts also campaigned this sire's GI Forego S.-winning son Yaupon. The colt was cataloged as hip 2 for this year's Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale, but was scratched from the event.

Gulfport is out of Fame and Fortune, a winning full-sister to GISW Cross Traffic, who was purchased by Gainesway Farm in foal to Uncle Mo's late son Laoban for $320,000 at this year's Keeneland January Sale. That produce sadly passed away. Fame and Fortune is also a half-sister to SW Thirteen Arrows (Indian Charlie) and SW Exodus (Medaglia d'Oro). Breeder Adam Bowden of Diamond Creek Farm was represented in last Saturday's G1 Cazoo Derby by Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}).

A half-brother to this year's GII TwinSpires.com Fair Grounds Oaks third-place finisher Favor (Pioneerof the Nile), GSP, $116,500, Gulfport has a yearling full-sister.

Immaculately Bred Arrogate Colt Gets ‘Rising Star’ Nod

Juddmonte's Artorius (c, 3, Arrogate–Paulassilverlining, by Ghostzapper) backed up his highly impressive runner-up effort on his six-furlong debut behind 'TDN Rising Star' Under Oath (Speightstown) at Keeneland Apr. 16 with a similarly promising performance when stretched to a mile Friday at Belmont. His deceptively easy 3/4-length success over big-figure maiden Gasoline (Curlin x Yellow Agate) earns him the 'Rising Star' designation.

With the vanguard early, the dark bay eased back to sit third and on the fence behind a sharp opening quarter-mile in :22.98. Shuffled back one position to sit midfield past the half in :46.61, Artorius was back into the bit and ready to roll, but in need of running room as the field hit the top of the stretch. The gap came one off the inside with a bit more than a furlong to travel, and Artorius took it professionally, but wanted to run around a bit at the eighth pole. The colt received a few reminders from Irad Ortiz, Jr. and held sway to win narrowly, albeit comfortably, in racehorse time. Gasoline, who finished a neck behind subsequent Texas Derby winner King Ottoman (Curlin) in a May 7 Churchill maiden going this one-turn mile configuration, prompted the pace throughout and boxed on gamely once passed in another high-class outing.

Artorius is the first foal out of Paulassilverlining, a four-time graded winner and third in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint for her breeder Vince Scuderi, then was acquired privately by Juddmonte prior to her 5-year-old season in 2017, with an eye on a future mating with Arrogate. The plan paid immediate dividends when Paulassilverlining won the GI Madison S. and GI Humana Distaff S. in her first two appearances in the legendary Juddmonte green-and-pink before her retirement at the end of that campaign.

A half-sister to dual GI Carter H. hero Dads Caps (Discreet Cat) and to the dams of SWs Long Weekend (Majesticperfection) and Miss Interpret (Street Sense), Paulassilverlining has a 2-year-old half-sister named Parameter (Into Mischief) and a foal half-sister by Tapit. Artorius carries 3 x 4 inbreeding to Unbridled.

SWEET ZAZ (f, 3, Nyquist–Century Park, by General Meeting) was beaten double digits into 12th when debuting in a nine-furlong turf event in March, but switches to perhaps a more suitable surface for this second go. A $67K Keeneland September buyback, the late April foal is out of the winner of the 2009 GIII Santa Ysabel S. (synthetic) who was purchased by Narvick International out of the 2017 KEENOV sale and produced a filly by Exaggerator in Kentucky that was subsequently exported to Japan. Century Park dropped Sweet Zaz in the Bluegrass and has also since been sent to Japan, where she foaled a colt from the first crop of GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive (American Pharoah) Mar. 25. PROTOPOROS (JPN) (c, 2, War Front–Cavale Doree {Fr}, by Sunday Break {Jpn}) debuts in the Carrot Farm green-and-white hoops and is the first foal from his dam, a Group 3 winner in France and third in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf for trainer Christophe Ferland. Cavale Doree was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for 650,000gns ($883,272) with this colt in utero at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. B-Northern Racing

 

ART PEPPER (c, 2, Frosted–Tim's Girl, by Broken Vow) cost trainer Hideyuki Mori $150K at KEESEP last year and is out of an unraced full-sister to Grade I-placed juvenile filly Broken Spell–the dam of SW Lord Dragon (Oxbow)–and a half-sister to recent Horseshoe Indianapolis S. winner Heavenly Hellos (Overanalyze). The gray colt's third dam Be a Prospector (Mr. Prospector), a half-sister to the important sire Belong to Me, produced MGSW Away (Dixieland Band), the dam of MGSW/GISP Eight Belles (Unbridled's Song). Thursday Insights: ‘Talkin’ Horse Tries the Turf

Ranlo Investments' TALKIN PHAROAH (American Pharoah) acquitted himself well enough in his 4 1/2-furlong bow over the Keeneland main track, finishing a well-backed runner-up Apr. 20, but a surface switch is in the offing, and with good reason. The bay colt is the first foal to the races from the Randall Lowe-bred Just Talkin (Midshipman), five times placed in sprint stakes company–four of those on the grass–and a full-sister to the outstanding GSW and GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint runner-up Lady Shipman. Lowe parted ways with Just Talkin at Fasig-Tipton February when she fetched $160K from Justin Casse before selling to Mountmellick Farm for $675K with this colt in utero at FTKNOV nine months later. Lady Shipman's foal of 2018, Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), has done more than his fair share of advertising for the family, with victories in the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in 2020 and in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint and is headed to the G1 King's Stand S. in a few weeks' time. On behalf of Lowe, trainer Wesley Ward went to $260K for Talkin Pharoah at Keeneland September, having been RNAd for $125K at Fasig-Tipton the previous November.

The success of Stonestreet Stables runners sourced overseas has been well documented and they take the wraps off the filly Lady Wildcat (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) here. Purchased by Ben McElroy for 160,000gns out of last year's Tattersalls October Sale, the March foal–by the sire of 2021 G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Camnapelle (Ire)–is out of a half-sister to Group 2 winner Priceless (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}), Group 2-placed Doctor Brown (GB) (Dr Fong) and to the dam of Group 3 winner Aeolus (GB) (Araafa {GB}).
