Protege Keeps The Momentum Rolling for Good Magic

6th-Churchill Downs, $123,375, Msw, 9-21, 2yo, 6f, 1:09.93, ft, 1 3/4 lengths.
PROTEGE (c, 2, Good Magic–Taboo, by Forestry) became the 11th winner for his in-form first-crop sire (by Curlin) with a good-looking victory beneath the Twin Spires Wednesday. The $80,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic breezer (see below) was sent off at odds of 10.55-1 and jumped about midfield before working his way forward to sit third, just off dueling pacesetters. Warming up to the task three wide approaching the stretch, the Apr. 25 foal claimed pace-pressing Lugan Knight (Goldencents) with a furlong and a half to race and edged away to post a 1 3/4-length victory. John Moores and Charles Noell's Merriebelle Stable acquired Taboo–a daughter of GISW Dream of Summer (Siberian Summer) and therefore a half-sister to GISWs Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway) and Vexatious (Giant's Causeway); MGSW & GISP Destin (Giant's Causeway); and Summer Promise (Uncle Mo), recent runner-up in the GIII Schuylerville S. at Saratoga–for $125,000 in foal to Orb at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale. The in-utero foal would become the filly Der Lu (Orb), GSP, $165,800, herself a $900,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile purchase who was a debut winner at Del Mar in 2016 (83 Beyer) and missed by a nose in the GIII La Canada S. the following season. Taboo is the dam of an Audible filly that was knocked down to Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for $300,000 during the opening session at Keeneland September, a filly foal by McKinzie and was most recently covered by Tiz the Law. Among Good Magic's winners are GII Sorrento S. victress Vegas Magic, GIII Iroquois S. upsetter Curly Jack and 'TDN Rising Star' Blazing Sevens, runner-up in the GI Runhappy Hopeful S. United Tote Fined for Penny Breakage Miscalculations

After failing to properly calculate Kentucky's newly implemented penny breakage at two Standardbred race meets in July, the totalizator services provider United Tote Company has been fined and ordered to “seed” a future exotic wagering pool with $4,445.77, which equals the amount that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) determined should have been paid out to bettors had the calculations been correct.

According to an administrative ruling dated Sept. 12 and signed by Waqas Ahmed, the KHRC's director of pari-mutuel wagering and compliance, United Tote “provided improper totalizator services” on races conducted at Oak Grove (July 17-19) and The Red Mile (July 31).

The first of those violations occurred two days after Kentucky first rolled out its mandate that dime breakage be replaced by bettor-friendly penny breakage.

According to the ruling, the mistakes also occurred despite the fact that United Tote “completed pre-meet totalizator tests with KHRC personnel using the correct breaks.”

The ruling stated that on July 20, United Tote submitted an Oak Grove incident report “showing that prices were calculated with ten-cent breaks instead of the required penny breaks, with a $1,916.56 liability owed to the public.”

Then on July 31, a separate incident report from The Red Mile stated “that prices were calculated with ten-cent breaks instead of the required penny breaks” but only for “remote sources outside of Kentucky that wagered on Race 2 onward on that date.” The liability owed to the public was $2.529.21, according to the KHRC.

According to the ruling, “ordinarily, the fine would total $1,000 for each day of violation; however, due to mitigating factors, that amount is reduced to $500 from July 17 through July 19  and July 31. According to the KHRC, those factors were:

“Oak Grove Racetrack has been conducting pari-mutuel wagering before the new breakage requirement that went into effect on July 14. The above events only impact the last three race dates of this track's 2022 race meet.

“[United Tote] calculated and paid the correct prices for all Kentucky sources for the wagering conducted on Red Mile Racetrack's meet. However, the penny break was not applied to Race 2 onward for all other sources due to a software defect.

“The violations were not intentional [and] the [United Tote] fully cooperated with the KHRC on determining the liability due,” the ruling stated.

Bettors will theoretically get repaid through the mandated pool seeding, which must occur “at a harness racetrack in the calendar year 2022 [with] all details…approved by the KHRC.”

In addition, United Tote “must submit its process for complying with regulatory requirements related to providing totalizator services,” the ruling stated.

It was unclear at deadline for this story whether United Tote is appealing the penalties.

Faith in Humanity Leads Brown Sweep of Pebbles

Klaravich Stables' Faith in Humanity (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), the lightest-raced filly in Sunday's GIII Pebbles S. at Belmont at the Big A, proved her inexperience was no issue as she led home a Chad Brown trifecta in just her third career start.

Debuting as a 7-5 favorite going two turns on the Monmouth turf July 24, the bay pressed the pace and edged away late for a 1 1/4-length graduation. Stepped right into stakes company, she went clear in the stretch of the restricted Riskaverse S. Aug. 25 at Saratoga before getting run down late by re-opposing stablemate Gina Romantica (Into Mischief) and settling for second.

Made the distant second choice here as the money poured in on Gina Romantica, Faith in Humanity quickly established command and showed the way while traveling comfortably through fractions of :24.13 and :49.55. Confidently handled by Manny Franco moving around the far turn, she cut the corner sweetly into the lane and darted clear entering the final three-sixteenths. Gina Romantica started to get going in the center of the course at the furlong grounds and ate into the leader's margin late, but Faith in Humanity was never in serious danger and held safely on the wire. Bahamian Club filled out the Brown trifecta.

“She was so nice and comfortable on the lead with her ears up,” said Franco. “I think that was the key, that she relaxed for me. I had a lot of horse under me when I asked her to go. I was worried about [Gina Romantica] because she beat me last time and I knew that was the horse to beat, but at the same time I had a good feeling going to the three-eighths pole because I knew I had horse. I knew they'd have to run hard to get me. The turns are pretty good for the horses being near the pace.”

Pedigree Notes:

With the victory, Faith in Humanity becomes the 101st stakes winner and 60th graded stakes winner for Ballylinch Stud's star resident Lope de Vega. She's the second foal to race out of her dam, a half-sister to French G1SW Indonesienne (Ire) (Muhtathir {GB}) and three additional black-type performers in France. Her third dam is a half-sister to MG1SW Matiara (Bering {GB}), two other MGSWs and the dam of Australian G1SW Unforgotten (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Unraced dam Sharavana is responsible for a yearling filly by Churchill (Ire).

Godolphin Into Mischief Homebred Rolls to Rising Star Honors

Sent off at odds of 2-1 despite a difficult draw in gate 12, Godolphin's Pretty Mischievous (f, 2, Into Mischief–Pretty City Dancer, by Tapit) did it toughest of all, but was there for Tyler Gaffalione when push came to shove and went on to prevail by 2 1/4 deceptively easy lengths to become the 33rd 'TDN Rising Star' for her boom sire.

Away without incident from the wide outside, the homebred raced four wide in the breeze just off a trio of pacesetters up ahead of her. Cruising along in hand as they raced around the turn, Pretty Mischievous breezed up to her rivals to make a line of four at the head of the stretch, showed some agility to open up when asked approaching the final furlong and was not fully extended to take it by a comfortable margin.

Pretty Mischievous is the second foal to the races from her dam, who shared the spoils with her sire's daughter Sweet Loretta in the 2016 GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga. Pretty City Dancer is a half-sister to Lear's Princess (Lear Fan), who defeated GI Belmont S. heroine Rags to Riches (A.P. Indy) in the 2007 GI Gazelle S., and was acquired by Stroud Coleman Bloodstock on behalf of Godolphin for $3.5 million in foal to Medaglia d'Oro at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The cross of Into Mischief over Tapit mares has resulted in 13 winners, including SW Travieza.

Barren to Uncle Mo for 2021, Pretty City Dancer produced a filly by Medaglia d'Oro this season and was bred back to Street Sense.
