BO DEREK (Speightstown) must have ticked all the proverbial boxes at last year's Keeneland September sale, as she was acquired by WinStar Farm and Siena Farm for $900,000, the priciest of 42 (53 ring) of her Eclipse Award and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint-winning sire's yearlings that were reported as sold in 2021. And the family behind her is extremely live. The Mar. 12 foal is the first from Wildwood Rose (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to the late GI Besilu Stables Florida Derby hero and 'TDN Rising Star' Materiality (Afleet Alex) and to GSW/MGISP My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song), whose 'Rising Star' son Annapolis (War Front) will have his fair share of supporters in next weekend's GI Breeders' Cup Mile off his victory in the GI Coolmore Turf Mile S. The Into Mischief yearling half-sister to Bo Derek was hammered down to Whisper Hill Farm for $1.15 million at KEESEP last month. Among the competition is the outposted Tough Legacy (Hard Spun), a sister to GIII Regret S. victress Hard Legacy whose dam Stone Legacy (Birdstone) was the very, very distant runner-up to Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro) in the 2009 GI Kentucky Oaks. A pair of Into Mischief colts share the spotlight in the 'Stars of Tomorrow I' opener Sunday. TALLADEGA fetched $400,000 at Keeneland November in 2020, one of three of the exceptional stallions 12 foals to achieve that top foal price, and improved into an $850,000 KEESEP yearling for the aforementioned WinStar/Siena partnership. Closely related to GSW Holiday Disguise (Harlan's Holiday) and also a half-brother to three-time stakes winner Midnight Disguise (Midnight Lute) and GI Del Mar Debutante runner-up Forest Caraway (Bodemeister), the bay is out of a winning half-sister to GSW millionaire Naughty New Yorker (Quiet American). Midnight Pranks, a $500,000 KEESEP acquisition, is out of the unraced Midnight Girl (Drosselmeyer), who was purchased by Twin Hopes Farm for $300,000 with the Into Mischief colt in utero at Fasig-Tipton November in 2019. The mare is a half-sister to dual Grade I winner Midnight Lucky (Midnight Lute) while the deeper female family includes GISW Hookedonthefeelin (Citidancer) and her Grade I-winning offspring Pussycat Doll (Real Quiet) and Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor). The cleverly named GORDY'S LABEL (Mo Town) was the second-dearest first-crop yearling for this sire (by Uncle Mo) when John Ballantyne's NBS Stables went to $300,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. The dark bay was also the gold medal winner among Mo Town's first foals to go through the ring at $185,000 at KEENOV in 2020. A half-brother to SW Just Read It (Constitution), the Jan. 18 foal is out of a full-sister to SW & GSP Pool Winner (Broken Vow) and to MSP Sounds of the City (Street Cry {Ire}), the dam of MGSW & MGISP Venetian Harbor (Munnings). FORT WARREN (Curlin) has the fence for this career debut and most recently worked six furlongs from the gate in 1:12.80 Oct. 24, the third-best of the morning behind a couple of 'TDN Rising Star' stablemates named Taiba (Gun Runner) and Messier (Empire Maker), who went in 1:11.40. The Feb. 11 foal is the lone listed produce for his SW/GSP dam La Appassionata (Bernardini), a full-sister to GSW Wilburn and a half to Grade II-winning juvenile Beethoven (Sky Mesa) and to the dam of GSW Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro). Fort Warren was a $550,000 KEESEP graduate. Drawn just to his outside is Earnhardt homebred Texthelegend (Justify), whose dam Life Blessings (Tapit) is a daughter of the couple's two-time Eclipse Award and five-time Grade I winner Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie). A $100,000 purchase out of the 2021 Fasig-Tipton July Sale, Habeas (Tapwrit) fetched $450,000 at this year's OBS April Sale (:21 flat), the most-expensive of 39 juveniles (45 ring) from the first crop of the Gainesway stallion. A half-brother to the stakes-placed Basso (Cairo Prince), Meta Max is out of a half-sister to GSW Seeking Daylight (Seeking the Gold), GISW Hedonist (Alydeed) and SW Zaha (Kingmambo). PARAIBA TOURMALINE (f, 2, Malibu Moon–Private Jet, by Smart Strike) was led out unsold at last year's Keeneland September sale on a bid of $70,000 and made that decision look shrewd when fetching $450,000 from Katsumi Yoshida at OBS March (:9 4/5). The Mar. 1 foal is out of a full-sister to dual Eclipse Award winner and Coolmore stallion Lookin At Lucky and a half-sister to MGSW Kensei (Mr. Greeley) and MGSW 'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings). Taylor S. winner Wandering Star (Red Ransom), also the dam of G1SW War Command (War Front) and GSW Naval Officer (Tale of the Cat). Maleficent Love was a $110,000 KEESEP buyback last fall. Cox Juveniles Top Breeders’ Cup Tab at Churchill

The Brad Cox stablemates Chop Chop (City of Light) and Verifying (Justify) worked five furlongs in company Friday morning at Churchill Downs as they prepare for next Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, respectively.

The pair broke off and began their breeze at the 4 1/2-furlong pole and were clocked in fractions of :11.80, :23.40, :35.80 and :47.40 before galloping out six furlongs in 1:13 flat, according to Churchill clocker John Nichols. Joe Talamo was aboard Chop Chop, last seen finishing a desperately close second to Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) in the GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland, while Florent Geroux partnered with Verifying, an impressive debut winner on the GI Runhappy Travers S. undercard at Saratoga Aug. 27 ahead of a runner-up effort to Blazing Sevens (Good Magic) in the GI Champagne S. at Aqueduct.

“It was a real good move for both of them,” said Cox, who will saddle five horses on Breeders' Cup weekend. “I thought Chop Chop was moving maybe a little easier on the outside. They both cooled out well and will head over to Keeneland Monday. (Chop Chop) ran a winning race in the Alcibiades and came up short. If she has similar effort and gets out of the gate well I think she'll run well. I'm really happy with both her and Verifying at this stage of their career. They are both being young horses and seem to be developing the right way into the Breeders' Cup.”

There was an unfortunate development during Friday trackwork at Churchill when Cox assistant Katie Tolbert suffered a serious injury to her left leg and was transported to a local hospital via ambulance, according to Daily Racing Form's Marty McGee. Tolbert was reportedly thrown off an unraced 2-year-old in the pre-dawn hours and struck a grandstand box-seat railing. DRF reported that training at the track was halted for about 40 minutes while Tolbert was attended to.

Also on the Friday worktab at Churchill were Breeders' Cup hopefuls Xigera (Nyquist), who went a half-mile in company in :48.80 for either the GI Juvenile Fillies Turf (first preference) or Juvenile Fillies; and GI Mile candidate Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute).

Jack d’Or Has Recency Advantage In Star-Studded Tenno Sho

A formidable trio exiting this year's Japanese Triple Crown returns to the races in Sunday's G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) at Tokyo Racecourse, but while each makes his first start since the G1 Tokyo Yushun in late May, the flashy Jack d'Or (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}) may have a slight advantage over his younger rivals–at least this time around.

The recognizable chestnut, whose sire took this race back in 2016, made meteoric progress early on this season, winning in listed company over course and distance in January before besting the classy Lei Papale (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in all-the-way fashion in the G2 Kinko Sho and running the 2000 metres in a record time of 1:57.2. Only fifth to Potager (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) after setting the majority of the pace in the G1 Osaka Hai in April, Jack d'Oro was asked to settle off the speed of G1 Dubai Turf dead-heater Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) and ran that one down in the shadow of the post to take the G2 Sapporo Kinen Aug. 21 (video, SC 4).

“The races take a lot out of him and the rotation going in to the Osaka Hai was tight,” trainer Kenichi Fujioka opined. “The ground was worse than I thought it'd be, and the early lap times were faster than I expected. Last start, he was a bit heavy, but this time his weight should be down. Physically, he's always been good, and I don't think he's changed much. Though he's become calmer, he switches on well. He has had good results at Tokyo 2000 meters and lots of experience to the left. I would say it's his best trip.”

 

 

 

Leading the 3-year-old challenge is Equinox (Jpn), a son of 2017 Tenno Sho hero Kitasan Black (Jpn). A veteran of just four career starts, the Silk Racing colourbearer was a Group 2 winner at headquarters as a juvenile and contested the first two legs of this year's Classics, missing narrowly to Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) in the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) in April and by even a slimmer margin to Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) in the G1 Toyko Yushun (Japanese Derby) last time, with Geoglyph not running out the 2400 metres in seventh.

“This Wednesday, he breezed with two others on the woodchip flat course, and again, all looked good,” said trainer Tetsuya Kimura. “His footwork was excellent. The distance shouldn't be a problem. We will keep preparing him to bring out his best on raceday.”

 

 

 

The lightly raced Danon Beluga (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) sports a profile similar to Equinox, with a pair of wins from his four outings, including a defeat of Geoglyph in a Group 3 at this venue ahead of the Classics, but he was somewhat disappointing when fourth in both the Guineas and–as the 5-2 favourite–in the Derby.

Last year's Japanese Derby hero Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) makes his first start at home this season, having contributed to a massive Dubai World Cup program for Japan with a victory over GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic in March ahead of a forgettable effort when fifth to State of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) in the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot in June. The Sunday Racing runner clearly deserves his place in this field, but it can be argued that he'll be using this as a prep for next month's G1 Longines Japan Cup, in which he was third last season.
