IDLE CHATTER (Justify) draws one from the outside in a field of 10 sophomores for this career debut for the Jack Sisterson stable. The chestnut is the latest foal out of Storm Dixie (Catienus), who was signed for by the late Olin Gentry for $1.9 million in foal to Tapit at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale about 18 months after the mare's foal Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) upset the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks. RINGSIDE (Curlin), a $1.3-million KEESEP acquisition by M.V. Magnier, is the latest to race out of the stakes-winning Dashing Debby, one of two second-crop juvenile stakes winners for Medaglia d'Oro, and who went on to produce SW Bronze Star (Tapit) as well as Dawn the Destroyer (Speightstown), a stakes-winning sprinter who was second in the 2019 GI Ballerina S. and third in a GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint while racing in the Stonestreet silks. KAUAI DAN (Quality Road), bought back on a bid of $240k at KEESEP in 2021, is a son of 'TDN Rising Star' Kauai Katie (Malibu Moon), a $490k Fasig-Tipton Florida juvenile purchase by Stonestreet who would go on to take four graded stakes and finish third in the 2013 GI Acorn S. Kauai Katie is the year-younger full-sister to Winding Way, who achieved the unprecedented and never-since-matched feat of being named a 'Rising Star' just one day and 3000 miles to the west after Kauai Katie. Validating her 'Rising Star' tag, Winding Way won the GIII Rancho Bernardo H. and has since produced Skinner (Curlin), a $510k OBSAPR breezer who was third in last year's GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity. City of Light’s Mimi Kakushi Too Strong in UAE 1000 Guineas

Having celebrated a maiden-breaking victory in the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial over seven furlongs Dec. 23, MIMI KAKUSHI (f, 3, City of Light–Rite Moment, by Vicar) ran out a convincing 4 1/2-length winner of Friday's $150,000 Listed UAE 1000 Guineas at Meydan. The bay, fourth in her first two trips to the races over sprint distances in November and early December, jumped well enough for Mickael Barzalona, but was beaten for speed by Awasef (Cairo Prince) to the outside and was ultimately eased back and into the two path to chase from second. Shadowing the pacesetter into the final 700 meters, Mimi Kakushi was roused to the front with a quarter-mile to travel and put the race to bed while striding readily clear. Awasef held second ahead of the one-start maiden Unjokable (Practical Joke).

“She was happy to be on the pace and the extra furlong was a help as well,” said Barzalona, winning this race for the second time after Nashmiah in 2017. “I think she will run a good race in the [1900m] UAE Oaks too.”

Bin Ghadayer added, “We have four weeks until the Oaks which is enough time for a rest; she will just need one breeze before the race. She is the best filly I've trained.”

A $180,000 purchase out of the 2021 Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale, Mimi Kakushi was hammered down for $250,000 at that same auction house's Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale after breezing a furlong in :10 1/5 over the Timonium dirt track. A fourth stakes winner for her sire (by Quality Road), Mimi Kakushi is a half-sister to dual black-type winner Moment Is Right (Medaglia d'Oro) and SW Laudation (Congrats). Rite Moment is also the dam of a yearling filly by Cajun Breeze and is due to Khozan this term.

Qatar Standout Noor Al Hawa To Stand In France

Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}–Majestic Roi, by Street Cry {Ire}), champion of his generation in Germany as a 3-year-old and a four-time highweighted older horse in Qatar, will enter stud in 2023 at Haras du Grand Courgeon some 25 kilometres northwest of Angers. He will command a fee of €2,300.

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited, Noor Al Hawa raced in the early part of his career for Jaber Abdullah and was trained by Andreas Wohler. He came to hand at three in 2016, posting a breakthrough black-type success in the Listed Prix de Tourgeville at Deauville and added a pair of German Group 3 tests before being acquired by the Qatar-based Al Wasmiyah Stud.

A three-length winner of the US$500,000 Qatar Derby (Listed), the chestnut was runner-up in the Listed H.H. The Emir's Trophy the following February and again in 2018 before winning the G3 Grand Prix de Vichy for trainer Elias Mikhalides that summer.

Permanently relocated to Doha in late 2018 and transferred to Georges Mikhalides, Noor Al Hawa went on to win 10 of 17 starts, including the 2021 Amir Trophy at his fifth attempt (video). His final racetrack appearance was a gallant fourth in defence of his Amir Trophy crown last February and he heads to the breeding barn with a career record of 18-6-5 from 37 starts for prize money of US$2,755,942.

“He's a remarkably tough horse, who has traveled extensively while performing over every surface and a large variety of distances,” renowned Qatar trainer Alban de Mieulle told Jour de Galop. “He's also a beautiful horse, very correct, with a great personality and I think that he will be a success as far as a sire of jumpers, for example. His owner is going to support him with flat mares.”

A half-brother to German stakes winner Majestic Jasmine (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), Noor Al Hawa is out of Majestic Roi, who carried Abdullah's silks to a 16-1 upset in the 2007 G1 Sun Chariot S. at Newmarket after causing a 25-1 boilover in that year's G3 Fred Darling S. She was also second in that year's G2 Prix de Sandringham at Chantilly. The listed-winning second dam L'Extra Honor (Hero's Honor) was also responsible for G3 Arc Trial hero Black Spirit (Black Minnaloushe). Noor Al Hawa's deeper female family includes the outstanding Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) (Danehill).

Another ‘Sun’-ny Prospect For Kitasan Black In Keisei Hai

Just days after his son Equinox (Jpn) was named both champion of his generation and Horse of the Year in Japan, Kitasan Black (Jpn) could well have another player on this year's Classics trail in the form of Sol Oriens (Jpn), who took his record to two-from-two with a convincing victory in Sunday's G3 Keisei Hai at Nakayama.

The slight second choice in the wagering behind Seven Magician (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}), the Shadai homebred was void of early speed and raced with about three rivals behind into the backstretch behind a modest tempo. Held together into the final half-mile by Takehsi Yokoyama, Sol Oriens was asked for an effort approaching the exit to the second turn, but drifted out several paths off the home corner. Rebalanced in upper stretch, he focused on the task at hand and ran out an easy winner while racing greenly and on his incorrect lead through the final furlong. Omega Rich Man (Jpn) (Isla Bonita {Jpn}), easily the roughest chance in the field of nine, ran home for second ahead of Seven Magician in third.

Pedigree Notes:

A bit of a later-bloomer in his own right, Kitasan Black won the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) at three, but is throwing runners more precocious than he. Sol Oriens is the fourth black-type winner–each at group level–for Kitasan Black, two each from his first two crops.

Patrick Barbe acquired the French stakes-winning Skia for €320,000 in foal to Leroidesanimaux (Brz) at the 2014 Arqana December Sale and her second Japanese-bred foal is the gifted Vin de Garde, a Group 2 winner at home and placed in the last two renewals of the G1 Dubai Turf. A half-sister to Tropaios (GB) (Excellent Art {GB}), also a stakes winner in France before becoming a star in Singapore for the China Horse Club, is also the dam of a 2-year–old colt by Kizuna (Jpn) and is due to Epiphaneia (Jpn) this season. Dam-sire Motivator is now responsible for 14 black-type winners (six group winners), a number that also includes treble Japanese Group 1 scorer Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}).
