Jockey Juan Gutierrez Bags Four Winners On Opening Day Card At Emerald Downs

Juan Gutierrez was in mid-season form as Emerald Downs launched its 25th season of live racing Wednesday.

Taking aim at Gallyn Mitchell's all-time track record for most wins, Gutierrez rode four winners on the 10-race card capped by a five-length victory on a razor-sharp Makah Lane in the featured $13,600 Muckleshoot Casino Purse for 3-year-olds and up.

Gutierrez, 50, is a 2018 Washington Racing Hall of Fame inductee and appears poised to notch another major milestone in 2020. With four victories Wednesday, Gutierrez boosted his Emerald Downs' win total to 1,377, and is just 42 wins away from Mitchell's mark of 1,419.

Gutierrez scored a natural hat trick with wins aboard Vroysky ($7.20), Benny the Jet ($45) and Freestone ($4.80) in races two, three and four, and finished off the four-bagger aboard Makah Lane ($7.60) in the ninth.

Winner of last year's Washington Cup Sophomore Stakes, Makah Lane tipped his hand as an up and comer in the older horse ranks. Stalking This Great Nation and Wine At Nine through fractions of :22 1/5 and :45.08, Makah Lane advanced three deep into the stretch, powered to the lead a furlong from the wire and won with total authority.

A four-year-old Washington-bred gelding by Atta Boy Roy, Makah Lane has won three of his last five starts and boasts an overall mark of 3-1-0 in seven starts with earnings of $51,143. Bonnie Jenne is trainer and co-owner with husband Wally Jenne and Doug and Nancy McPhee.

Mutuel handle on the 10-race card totaled $1,636,000.

Two-Time Champion Roy H Retired; Gelding Will Remain Part of Miller’s Barn As Stable Pony

Trainer Peter Miller announced the retirement of two-time Sprint Champion Roy H on Thursday. The 8-year-old gelding won back-to-back editions of the Breeders' Cup Sprint in 2017 and 2018, and retires with $3,139,765 in earnings while winning 10 of 23 starts, including nine of his last 12 races.

“It is with some sadness but also great joy that we announce the retirement of Roy H from racing,” Miller said. “What can you say about a horse like this who has given us so many thrilling moments? He is the embodiment of class and we will definitely miss seeing him compete. Fortunately, we will not have to miss him for long as he will be retired as a barn pony and remain a very important part of our team. He is a 'favorite son' among our staff and the feeling seems to be mutual as Roy H loves to be around the other horses and loves to train.

“He gave Rockingham Ranch and me a tremendous ride. It was both an honor and a pleasure to train such a magnificent animal. He is sound and healthy and this seemed like the right time to make this change in his career. We've had him since he was a 2-year-old, so watching him grow and mature into a world champion has been a great gift.”

Kentucky Governor Approves Churchill’s Plan For Spectators To Attend Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs Racetrack announced that after consultation with Gov. Andy Beshear and state public health officials the 146th runnings of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and Longines Kentucky Oaks will occur with spectators under strict guidelines.

Kentucky Derby Week will be held Sept. 1-5 with the Oaks on Friday, Sept. 4 and the Derby on Saturday, Sept. 5.

“We truly appreciate the leadership of the Governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, and all of the hard work, collaboration and guidance that state and local officials and public health experts have provided us to safely and responsibly host Kentucky Derby Week in September with spectators,” said Churchill Downs Racetrack President Kevin Flanery. “Our team is deeply committed to holding the very best Kentucky Derby ever, and we will take all necessary steps to protect the health and safety of all who attend and participate in the Derby. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have established a comprehensive set of operating procedures, which include a multitude of precautionary measures to be followed while fans are in attendance at our facility. We are determined to keep our customers, employees and communities as safe as we responsibly can.”

Churchill Downs' plan was developed in conjunction with advice and counsel set forth by the Louisville Metro Health Department and Kentucky's Healthy at Work guidance. Some of the steps that will be taken to ensure guest and employee safety include:

· Venue capacity reductions to limit overall crowd density, including general admission, outdoor reserved seating, premium dining and suites. More information on ticketing and seating areas will be released in the coming days and also will be sent directly to ticket holders.

· General admission tickets will be limited to a specified number and only grant access to the infield. No general admission will be allowed in the “front side” or paddock areas of the facility.

· Access throughout the facility will be severely limited.

· Credentials for employees, media and guests will be reduced.

· Barn area access will be restricted to essential personnel. Guests and parties in the barn area for morning workouts and during race days will be eliminated.

· Changes in venue operations to limit person-to-person touchpoints.

· Team member protocols established to protect employees and guests.

· A revised Fan Code of Conduct that establishes expectations for guests coming to the Derby.

o Guests will be consistently and frequently encouraged to wear a mask at all times unless seated in their reserved seat or venue. This includes when:

§ Riding on a shuttle

§ Traveling through the venue

§ Going to the restroom

§ Placing an in-person wager

§ Purchasing food or beverages from a concession stand

o Guests will be asked to wash their hands for 20 seconds or sanitize them frequently.

o Guests will be encouraged to socially distance themselves from others when possible.

Tickets purchased for the originally scheduled Kentucky Derby Week dates are automatically valid for the new race dates. Guests may arrive on the new dates in September with their printed ticket or mobile ticket to be scanned for entry at the gates. Guests who purchased tickets from a vendor or secondary market website other than Churchill Downs, Ticketmaster.com or Derby Experiences must contact those sites directly. Churchill Downs is unable to process refunds for those tickets.

Liam’s Map Colt Clocks Fastest Quarter During First Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Under Tack Session

The first session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale's under tack show kicked off on Wednesday with a Liam's Map colt taking the spotlight among the juveniles working a quarter-mile.

The gray or roan colt, offered as Hip 151, covered the distance in :20 4/5 seconds over the Maryland State Fairgrounds' dirt surface in Timonium, Md. Consigned by All Dreams Equine, agent, the colt is out of the placed Big Brown mare One Foxy Grey, whose first foal to race is a winner. His second dam is the Grade 1 winner Irish Smoke, with an extended family that includes Grade 1 winner Book Review and Grade 2 winner Instagrand.

Two horses clocked quarters in :21 2/5 seconds on Wednesday:

Hip 39, Ours Forever, a Louisiana-bred Half Ours filly out of the stakes-placed Dayjur mare Illustrious Dream, whose three foals to race are all winners. Consigned by Kirkwood Stables, agent, she hails from the family of champion Answer Lively.
Hip 132, a first-crop Nyquist filly out of the unraced Silver Deputy mare Mother's Milk, whose runners include the Grade 3-placed Sheza Milky Way. Grade 2 winner Varenka is in the family of this filly, who is consigned by Hoby and Layna Kight, agent.

The honors for fastest eighth of a mile were shared by four juveniles during the first breeze session:

Hip 51, a first-crop Speightster colt out of the unplaced Mizzen Mast mare Izzy Izzy, whose three foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner En Hanse. Soaring Free, Canada's 2004 Horse of the Year, can be found in this colt's page, along with Canadian champion Regal Intention. He is consigned by L.G., agent.
Hip 106, a first-crop Outwork colt out of the unraced Maria's Mon mare Marialua, who is the dam of five winners from eight foals to race. The New York-bred is from the extended family of Triple Crown winner Affirmed, and he is consigned by Wolf Creek Farms, agent.
Hip 118, a Virginia-bred Uncle Mo colt out of the winning Mineshaft mare Miss Ocean City, whose runners include Grade 2 winner Azar. Belmont Stakes winner Go and Go is on the page of this colt, who is consigned by Pike Racing, agent.
Hip 173, a Maryland-bred first-crop Upstart filly out of the stakes-winning Pure Prize mare Plum, who is the dam of two winners from three runners. Cary Frommer consigns the filly, as agent.

The second of three under tack sessions at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale commences Thursday, beginning at 8 a.m. Eastern. The auction will take place June 29-30, with each session beginning at 11 a.m.
