Sale Voided On Seven-Figure Speightster Colt At OBS Spring Auction

One of the highlights of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale was undone when buyer Larry Best of OXO Equine turned back the purchase of a $1.1-million Speightster colt, BloodHorse reports.

The purchase was voided under the Conditions of Sale after staff at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky., found the colt to be a cribber; a condition that was not announced at the time he was in the ring. Video was taken of the horse cribbing, and sent to the OBS staff, with Best formally announcing his intention to return the horse shortly before the end of the seven-day window to do so.

Tom McCrocklin consigned the colt as agent for Solana Beach Sales, the pinhooking wing of the Little Red Feather Racing partnership. The colt will be sent to trainer Bob Baffert to begin his racetrack career. McCrocklin told BloodHorse that the colt had showed no signs of cribbing prior to the sale, thus an announcement was not warranted, but the sellers were happy to retain the horse to race.

Named Fortunate Son, the New York-bred colt is out of the stakes-placed Indian Charlie mare Auspicious, who is the dam of three winners from four foals to race. He sold for $110,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearling Sale.

Breeders’ Cup Extends Racing Age Nomination Discount Deadline To Aug. 15

Due to changes in racetrack schedules and auction sales dates as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, the Breeders' Cup announced Monday that it is extending the discount deadline for horses of racing age to Saturday, Aug. 15.

All horses must be Breeders' Cup-nominated in order to compete in the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which is scheduled to be held at Keeneland Race Course Lexington, Ky., Nov. 6-7.

The original horses of racing age nomination discount deadline was July 15.

“Although most Breeders' Cup nominated horses join the program as weanlings, there are a few each year that didn't get the Breeders' Cup advantage as a foal,” said Dora Delgado, Breeders' Cup Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Officer. “We created the horses of racing age nomination program to make sure all runners have a chance to compete in our racing programs including the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Now that racing has resumed in most locations, we believe our one-month extension will allow horsemen to better evaluate their racing stock and nominate to the Breeders' Cup program, providing eligibility for their entire racing career.”

The nomination discounts are as follows:

2-year-olds by a nominated Breeders' Cup stallion can join the program for US$12,000. This one-time nomination fee makes the racehorse Breeders' Cup-eligible for its entire racing career.
Runners which are 3-year-olds and older that were foaled in the Northern Hemisphere and sired by a nominated stallion will receive a 50% discount off normal racehorse nomination fees. Three-year-olds and older which were born in the Southern Hemisphere can be nominated for 25% of their regular nomination fee.
All nominated racehorses are eligible for the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will have purses and awards totaling more than $35 million this year, and for any other Breeders' Cup racing program for their entire racing careers.

Following the Aug. 15 deadline, the price for all non-nominated runners reverts back to the standard racehorse nomination fee of US$100,000 or more until Oct. 26, when all runners must be pre-entered for the Breeders' Cup World Championships races.

Owners may nominate their horses of racing age online at https://members.breederscup.com/Nomination/RacehorseNominationTerms1 or by calling the Breeders' Cup Racing department at 859-514-9422.

Owners of horses of racing age by non-nominated stallions also can take advantage of discounted prices before Aug. 15. Two-year-olds by non-nominated stallions can join the program for US$18,000; Northern Hemisphere 3-year-olds and older for US$100,000 and Southern Hemisphere 3-year-olds and older for US$50,000.

Oceanport Centennial Stakes Headlines Six-Race Opening Day Card At Monmouth This Friday

Awesome Anywhere, who dominated in a starter allowance race at Oaklawn Park two starts ago, heads a field of eight older horses for the first running of the $75,000 Oceanport Centennial Stakes, the feature race on Monmouth Park's opening day card on Friday, July 3.

First race post time on Fridays will be at 5 p.m. with the exception of Sept. 4 (Kentucky Oaks Day), when post time will be 12:50 p.m.

Post times on Saturday and Sunday during the 37-day meet will be 12:50 p.m. except for a noon start Haskell Day on Saturday, July 18.

Parking and admission are free all year except for Haskell Day.

Monmouth Park will open its gates to fans at 11 a.m. daily starting Thursday, July 2, when simulcasting wagering and the William Hill Sports Book will be available for the first time since the track was shut down on March 16 under state-imposed restrictions to fight the COVID-19 virus.

Starting Thursday, fans can enter the track through the Grandstand or Clubhouse entrances only. Upon entry, fans will receive a temperature check and will be asked to fill out a brief health questionnaire.

Masks are required to enter the facility.

No outside food or beverages will be permitted.

The Oceanport Centennial Stakes, at five furlongs, headlines a six-race Friday card that has drawn 57 entries.

Paco Lopez, seeking a seventh Monmouth Park riding title, has the mount aboard Awesome Anywhere, who is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer. A 6-year-old gelding, Awesome Anywhere has won seven of 18 career starts.

Meadowlands Reopening To Fans At 25 Percent Capacity On July 2

The Meadowlands Racetrack will re-open its doors to fans this Thursday, July 2 when onsite simulcasting and sports wagering is allowed to resume in New Jersey. Per the Executive Order 157, the grandstand will open to 25% capacity. The Backyard and Apron areas will also be open.

All guests will be required to wear a face covering, have their temperature checked and complete a brief health questionnaire. No one with a temperature exceeding 100.4 will be allowed to enter. All guests will be required to enter via the simulcast entrance and valet parking will not be available at this time.

Dining will also resume on Friday and Saturday nights for live racing (7:15 pm post). Trotters will be open to horse owners and members and the West Deck will be open for all other reservations. Reservations are required and dining must be prepaid. Reservations can be made by calling Marianne Rotella at 201-842-5059 or emailing mrotella@playmeadowlands.com.

The Backyard BBQ & Grill along with the Rooftop Terrace will also be open weather permitting.
