Trainer Dale Romans To Appear On Breeders’ Cup Cocktails & Conversation Broadcast This Thursday

The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred horse racing's most prestigious international events, today announces special guest Dale Romans for this week's installment of Cocktails & Conversation, the recurring virtual happy hour series designed to rally the horse racing industry's most prominent figures to raise funds for communities that have been profoundly impacted by COVID-19.

The next Cocktails & Conversation broadcast, airing Thursday, July 2 at 6 p.m. ET via Breeders' Cup's Twitter, YouTube and Facebook pages, will mark the 12th installment of the series. The episode will be hosted by Nick Luck and Britney Eurton of NBC Sports and 21 Club mixologist and creator of Breeders' Cup's official cocktails Mark Tubridy.

Thursday's virtual happy hour will feature Romans, who has entered Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister's Mr Freeze in Saturday's (July 4) 1-mile, $500,000 Runhappy Metropolitan Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park. A Louisville native, Romans has steadily risen up the ranks of great American trainers since receiving his training license at age 18. Romans won the first of his three Breeders' Cup World Championships races in 2009, when Tapitsfly captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

In 2011, Romans won the Preakness Stakes (G1) with Shackleford, and later that year captured the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) with 64-1 Court Vision. Romans had a banner season in 2012, amassing more than $11.8 million in total earnings and winning 125 races. He captured the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1) with Little Mike, the Metropolitan Handicap with Shackleford and the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and TVG Pacific Classic (G1) with Dullahan. As a result of these achievements, Romans was voted the Champion Trainer Eclipse Award.

In 2015, the Romans-trained Keen Ice upset Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.

Romans will have one of the favorites with Mr Freeze in Saturday's Met Mile, which will be broadcast live on NBC (5-6 p.m. ET) as a part of the “Breeders' Cup Challenge Series Win and You're In – presented by America's Best Racing.” The winner of Saturday's race will earn an automatic starting position into this year's $2 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1).

Thursday's live stream will commence with Tubridy leading a virtual mixology class for viewers, creating two refreshing cocktails to enjoy at home during the broadcast. Mark will be mixing up a “Watermelon Martini,” consisting of Tito's Handmade Vodka, watermelon juice, lime juice, and simple syrup; and a “Bourbon Peach Colada,” with Maker's Mark ® Bourbon, frozen peaches, cream of coconut and lemon juice.

Following the cocktail mixing segment, the broadcast will feature a conversational interview with Romans, who will offer his insightful perspectives and thoughts on Mr Freeze, the latest developments in horse racing and other everyday topics. Fans will be able to submit questions via social media for the hosts and for Romans to answer during the broadcast for a truly interactive experience. Throughout the cocktail hour, viewers will be encouraged to donate to industry workers and communities in need through the official Breeders' Cup website.

Tapping all-star talents such as world-renowned jockeys Frankie Dettori and Mike Smith; leading Breeders' Cup-winning trainers Bob Baffert, Chad Brown, Graham Motion and Todd Pletcher; NHL All-Star Erik Johnson; restauranteur and celebrity Chef Bobby Flay; film and television actress and equestrian rider Bo Derek; owner Jeff Bloom; trainer Tom Amoss; television personality and fashion designer Carson Kressley; and the NBC Sports' horse racing broadcasting team, Breeders' Cup has raised thousands of dollars through previous broadcasts.

Race Track Chaplaincy of America, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the horse racing community through social services, food and clothing banks and educational workshops.
USBG National Charity Foundation, which supports bartenders, barbacks and bar servers throughout the nation who have been financially impacted by restaurant and bar shutdowns as a result of the health crisis.
Restaurant Workers Relief Program, a project jointly formed by Maker's Mark and the Lee Initiative that has transformed restaurants in major cities into relief centers that offer food and supplies to affected hospitality workers.

The filly’s dam, a one-time $600K Keeneland November weanling, is responsible for the SP Reversethedecision (Scat Daddy), while the deeper female family includes G1SW Etoile Montante (Miswaki), dam of MGSW Starformer (Dynaformer), and French MSW/GSP Viviana (Nureyev), whose daughters Tates Creek (Rahy) and Sightseek (Distant View) combined to carry the Juddmonte silks to nine Grade I wins in this country. Alpha Zip was a $145K KEESEP buyback and was RNAd for $95K at Fasig-Tipton October before fetching $275K as an OBS April breezer. B-Overbrook Farm (KY)

PARIS TESORO (f, 4, Declaration of War–Patricias Prospect, by A.P. Indy) switched from the turf to the dirt last summer and promptly won back-to-back races at Niigata in August and October (see below, gate 13). A half-sister to MSP Tweeting (Uncle Mo), the dark bay is out of a daughter of G1SW Macoumba (Mr. Prospector), making her a full-sister to leading sire Malibu Moon and a half to MGSP Positively (Distorted Humor) and SP Mutually Benefit (Dynaformer), the dam of MSW & MGSP Compelled (War Front). Acquired in utero for $60K at KEENOV in 2015, Paris Tesoro was a $25K KEENOV acquisition and was resold for €80K at the 2017 Arqana August Yearling Sale. OBS Open Yearling Sale Online Entries Now Available; 2-Year-Olds And Racing Age Section Added To October Sale

Online entries for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 Open Sale of Yearlings may be made on the OBS website at: OBS Yearling entries. The Open Yearling Sale is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, October 14 and 15.

Conventional printed consignor contracts are also available at the sales grounds or may be downloaded from the OBS website, filled out and returned via email, fax or U.S. mail.

In response to market demand, OBS will hold a 2-year-olds in training and horses of racing age section with an under tack show in conjunction with the October sale. Online and conventional consignor contracts will also be available via the OBS website and at the sales office. Entries for the both the Open Yearling Sale and 2-year-old section will close Aug. 3.

Nominations for the 2020 October Selected Sale of Yearlings can still be made at: October Nomination Form. The Selected Sale is set for Tuesday, Oct. 13.

“It's certainly been a year of altered sale schedules, but we're doing everything in our power to help our consignors and buyers,” said OBS director of sales Tod Wojciechowski. “The addition of 2-year-olds to October helps both sides of our customer base and creates synergy with the yearling sale.”

The October Sale and under tack show will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN and BloodHorse websites.

OBS will again offer online bidding during the October Sale. Buyers will be able to go to the OBS website and register to gain bidding approval, then access the OBS Bidding Screen with their credentials. Grade 1 Winner Got Stormy Takes On Males Again In Poker Stakes

Gary Barber's Got Stormy will once again take on the boys as she looks for the first win of her 2020 campaign in Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Poker, a one-mile turf test for older horses on Runhappy Met Mile Day July 4 at Belmont Park.

The Grade 3 Poker is one of five graded stakes on a loaded card headlined by the Grade 1 Runhappy Met Mile, open to 3-year-olds and up, offering a berth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile; along with the Grade 1, $400,000 Manhattan for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/4-miles on turf; the Grade 2, $200,000 Suburban, a 1 1/4-mile test on Big Sandy; and the Grade 3, $100,000 Victory Ride, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for sophomore fillies.

Slated as Race 8 at 5:13 p.m. Eastern on Saturday's 11-race card, which offers a first post of 1:15 p.m., the Poker will feature live on NBC from 5 – 6 p.m. Eastern.

In August, Got Stormy, a 5-year-old daughter of Get Stormy, became the first filly to win the Grade 1 Fourstardave, in its 35th running, besting the boys at one mile over a firm inner turf in a track record 1:32 flat at Saratoga Race Course.

Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, Got Stormy would face males in her next two starts finishing second in both the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile, over soft going, and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita. She completed a stellar season with a win in the Grade 1 Matriarch at Del Mar.

Winless in three starts this season, Got Stormy's best effort came when second by a neck to River Boyne in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile on March 7 at Santa Anita. Last out, she ran fourth in the Grade 3 Beaugay when chasing frontrunning winner Rushing Fall off a near three-month layoff on June 3 at Belmont.

“The California race was very good. Her last race was disappointing, but we took her out of her element,” said Casse. ” There was no speed in the race and we tried to keep her closer and that was to her demise. We won't do that again, we'll let her settle.”

Got Stormy scratched out of last Saturday's Grade 1 Just a Game after persistent rainstorms soaked the Belmont green. Casse said he made the call after watching Monkeyseemonkeydo win a seven-furlong turf maiden in 1:24.15.

“After watching them run seven-eighths in 24 and change, I said this turf is not for us,” said Casse. “She didn't get really good until last summer and her best races are on hard ground. I think the soft turf got her beat in the Woodbine Mile and she was just beat by a better horse at the Breeders' Cup.

“We're just trying to find her top form and I believe it has to do with a harder turf course,” added Casse. “She won't get it this weekend at Belmont, but she also likes the sharper turns at Saratoga and Santa Anita because she has a quick turn of foot when you ask her to go.”

Hall of Famer John Velazquez, who piloted Got Stormy to victory in the 2018 Wild Applause at one-mile on the Belmont turf, will be legged up on the talented chestnut for just the second time from post 7.

Four-time Eclipse Award-winner Chad Brown, leading trainer at the Belmont spring/summer meet, will saddle the formidable duo of Grade 1-winner Valid Point and the improving Value Proposition.

Owned by e Five Racing Thoroughbreds and Michael J. Ryan, Valid Point won his first three career starts topped by a one-length score in the Grade 1 Secretariat in August at Arlington Park. The 4-year-old Scat Daddy colt completed his campaign with an off-the-board effort in October in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland.

Klaravich Stables' Value Proposition, a dark bay son of Dansili, garnered a career-best 100 Beyer Speed Figure last out when capturing an optional-claiming turf mile on June 3 at Belmont Park.

Hall of Famer Javier Castellano will pilot Valid Point from post 2 while Value Proposition will exit post 9 under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

The Elkstone Group's Social Paranoia, trained by Todd Pletcher, offers a consistent record of 14-3-4-5 with purse earnings of $847,210. The 4-year-old Street Boss colt ran second here last year in Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational over 1 ¼-miles on the Widener turf to kick off the Turf Triple series. Social Paranoia was an even fourth in the Saratoga Derby Invitational, second leg of the Turf Triple, before winning the Dueling Grounds Derby at 1 5/16-miles at Kentucky Downs.

Social Paranoia made the grade in his seasonal debut with a rousing last-to-first charge in the Grade 3 Appleton, a one-mile turf test on March 28 at Gulfstream Park. He arrives at the Poker from an off-the-board effort in the Grade 2 Fort Marcy contested over nine furlongs on a Belmont inner turf rated good.

Jose Ortiz has the call aboard Social Paranoia from post 5.

Juddmonte Farms homebred Seismic Wave, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, captured the English Channel at one-mile on the Widener turf to close out his sophomore season. The Tapit chestnut, who boasts a record of 12-3-2-2, launched a seven-wide rally in his seasonal debut when charging from last-of-13 to finish fourth in the First Defence, a seven-furlong Widener turf test on June 7 at Belmont.

Joel Rosario retains the mount from post 4.

Rounding out the field are Dream Friend [Jose Lezcano, post 1], Hawkish [Manny Franco, post 3], Eons [Kendrick Carmouche, post 6], and main-track only entrant Its All Relevant [Romero Maragh, post 8].

America's Day at the Races, produced by NYRA in partnership with FOX Sports, and airing live on Fox Sports and MSG+ will offer live coverage of Belmont Park stakes action on Saturday from 1 – 5 p.m. and from 6 – 7 p.m. on FS1.
