Smiling Tiger Colt Tops Washington Summer Sale

Smiling Tiger continued to enjoy commercial success at the Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale on Tuesday, with one of his young horses topping the sale at Emerald Downs for the second time in four years.

The $70,000 sale topper, Hip 57, was signed for by Brian Koriner, agent, for Samantha Siegel's Jay Em Ess Stable. The handsome chestnut was from the Critter Creek Farm consignment, as agent for PT Syndicate #1 LLC. Koriner was the initial trainer for Smiling Tiger's Grade 1-winning daughter Spiced Perfection. Hip 57 is the second foal out of the $172,010 stakes-placed Swiss Yodeler mare Grand Yodeler.

The 2017 sale topper, Baja Sur, also by Smiling Tiger, was named Washington's Horse of the Year in 2019.

Smiling Tiger, one of the fastest runners of his generation and the multiple Grade 1 winner was himself a 2008 WTBOA sale graduate. The stallion holds court at Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif. Of the three other Smiling Tiger yearlings consigned to this year's sale, two others brought prices of $30,000 and $25,000 while the other was a $39,000 RNA.

Koriner also purchased the second highest-selling colt, Hip 77, for Siegel. Also sold by agent Critter Creek Farm, this time as agent for Premier Thoroughbreds LLC and Alan Klein, the colt hails from the first crop of triple Grade 1 winner Lord Nelson and is out of the good producing Indian Charlie matron Lottawampum.

Former Washingtonian and now successful California trainer Mark Glatt, as agent, purchased the third highest-selling colt from the same consignor as the sale topper. The Monrovia-based conditioner went to $42,000 to acquire Hip 62, a colt from the first crop of Grade 2 winner Danzing Candy and out of $137,206 stakes winner Ilikcandy, by Malibu Moon.

Two fillies brought a $30,000 bid, the Smiling Tiger—Princess Hillary filly (Halvorson Bloodstock Services LLC, Agent for Sale Mahlum) who was noted above, and Hip 91. From the first crop of Grade  1 winner Cupid, by Tapit, the young distaffer is the first offspring of $109,265 earner My Palmilla, a daughter of Tribal Rule who hails from the family of Washington champions Rings a Chime and Bella Mia, all of whom were bred and offered through the WTBOA Sales program by Griffin Place LLC.

After 14 yearlings were withdrawn and 25 were RNAs, the 75 yearlings that were listed as sold averaged $12,652 with a $7,500 median. Sixteen yearlings brought a bid of $20,000 or more.

Among the 18 broodmare/broodmare prospects consigned, Hip 204, Cecileabration, a daughter of Graeme Hall who was offered bred to Smiling Tiger, was signed for by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, agent, for $12,500.  The mare also was a member of the Critter Creek Farm consignment for PT Syndicate #1 LLC.

Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale Rescheduled for September 7

The Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale, originally scheduled to take place in Newmarket on Tuesday, Sept. 8, has been rescheduled and will now take place at Tattersalls Park Paddocks on Monday, Sept. 7.

The date has been brought forward in response to the decision by French based sales company Arqana to move their yearling sale to Sept. 9. The revised Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale date aims to facilitate those who may wish to attend both venues.

The Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale has quickly established itself as a proven and consistent source of top class juvenile talent attracting strong domestic support as well as buyers from throughout Europe. Since 2019 purchasers have sourced 34 individual 2-year-old winners at an average price of £12,500, with 9 black type winners on the roll of honor including this year's Group 2 Lowther Stakes winner Miss Amulet and Group 3 Molecomb Stakes winner Steel Bull. This year's renewal has 257 quality yearlings cataloged, all of which are eligible for the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.

Vendors will now be able to arrive at Park Paddocks from 6 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, whilst it is recommended yearlings will be available for inspection the weekend of Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6.

The sale is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7.

Breeze On By, Gatsby Prep For Rematch In Florida Sire Stakes Affirmed Division

Stonehedge LLC's Breeze On By is scheduled to seek his third straight victory and second leg of the 2020 Florida Sire Stakes series Aug. 29 in the $200,000 Affirmed at Gulfstream Park.

The gelded son of Cajun Breeze is set to square off against Arindel's Gatsby, whom he defeated by a hard-fought length in the $100,000 FSS Dr. Fager, the Aug. 1 first leg of the tradition rich series for 2-year-olds sired by accredited Florida stallions. The homebred gelding rushed to the lead from his rail post position, set a pressured pace and battled back when headed by Gatsby to prevail in the six-furlong sprint.

Trained by Ralph Nicks, Breeze On By is undefeated in two starts, including a sensational front-running six-length victory in his July 12 debut at Gulfstream. Stonehedge and Nicks will also be represented by Seazan, a son of Khozan who broke his maiden in his second career start on the Dr. Fager undercard.

Gatsby, a homebred son of Brethren who finished 8 ¼ lengths clear of the third-place finisher in the Dr. Fager, won his April 12 debut, in which he chased odds-on favorite Golden Pal into the stretch before edging away to victory by three-quarters of a length. The Wesley Ward-trained Golden Pal went on to finish second in the Norfolk (G2) at Royal Ascot, while Gatsby finished off-the-board in the June 27 Bashford Manor (G3) at Churchill Downs. Gatsby rebounded with a strong effort in the Dr. Fager.

The field for the seven-furlong Affirmed is also expected to include Kenneth Fishbein's Boca Boy and Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa's Famous Gent, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Dr. Fager.

Kenny McPeek, who trains the No. 1-ranked 3-year-old filly in the country in Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) and Alabama (G1) winner Swiss Skydiver, will seek dominance in the Florida Sire Stakes filly division with newcomer Raining Sunshine in the $200,000 Susan's Girl . Martin Erin Haught's homebred daughter of First Dude graduated in her second career start while romping to a 5 ¾-length maiden victory at Gulfstream Aug. 2.

Stonehedge LLC, which has won 14 Florida Sire Stakes series races, will also be well represented in the seven-furlong Susan's Girl by Go Jo Jo Go, who captured the first leg of the Florida Sire Stakes series for fillies. The Michael Yates-trained daughter of Khozan closed from last to capture the $100,000 Desert Vixen by 1 ¼ lengths over favored Princess Secret. Stonehedge LLC will also be represented by Oh Deborah, a Ralph Nicks-trained daughter of Winslow Homer who debuted with a 3 ½-length victory in a $50,000 maiden claiming race by 3 ¼ lengths July 19.

Princess Secret, a daughter of Khozan owned and trained by Daniel Pita, is expected to try to make amends in the seven-furlong Susan's Girl. Princess Secret, who debuted May 7 with a four-length victory, finished a troubled second behind highly regarded Papetu while taking on the boys in a July 5 allowance before finishing second in the Desert Vixen.

Arindel's Freak, a daughter of Brethren who finished a nose behind Princess Secret while checking in third in the Desert Vixen, is slated to return in the Susan's Girl. Arindel will also be represented by Lyrical, a daughter of Brethren who finished sixth in the Desert Vixen.

Trainer Steven Dwoskin's Alluramore, a daughter of Gone Astray who finished an even fourth in the Desert Vixen, is expected to run in the Susan's Girl.

The Florida Sire Stakes series is scheduled to wrap up Sept. 26 with the $400,000 In Reality and the $400,000 My Dear Girl for fillies.

Aqueduct’s Fall Meet To Cover 18 Race Days, Include 11 Graded Stakes Events

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced race dates for the 18-day Aqueduct Racetrack fall meet, offering 29 stakes, including 11 graded events, worth $3.41 million in purse money, that will kick off on Friday, November 6 and run through Sunday, December 6.

Opening weekend of the Big A fall meet, which coincides with the Breeders' Cup set for November 6-7 at Keeneland Race Course, begins with the $100,000 Tempted for juvenile fillies and $80,000 Atlantic Beach for juvenile turf sprinters on November 6.

The opening weekend stakes action continues on November 7 with the Grade 3, $100,000 Turnback the Alarm Handicap and the Grade 3, $100,000 Nashua for 2-year-olds on November 8.

The Saturday, November 14 card will feature the $100,000 Artie Schiller for turf milers 3-years-old and up and the $100,000 Notebook, a six-furlong sprint for New York-bred juveniles. The following day offers the $100,000 Winter Memories at 1 1/16-miles on turf for sophomore fillies and the $100,000 Key Cents for New York-bred juvenile filly sprinters.

The Grade 3, $100,000 Red Smith, a 1 3/8-mile turf marathon for 3-year-olds and up continues the graded stakes action at the fall meet on Saturday, November 21. Two divisions of the New York Stallion Stakes Series will take centerstage on Sunday, November 22, featuring the $100,000 Thunder Rumble, a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up, and it's filly counterpart, the $100,000 Staten Island, also at seven-eighths on the main track.

Thanksgiving Week at the Big A will feature three days of exciting racing action beginning Friday, November 27 through Sunday, November 29 with 10 stakes worth $1 million.

A trio of stakes on November 27 includes the Grade 3, $100,000 Comely sophomore fillies at nine furlongs; the $100,000 Gio Ponti at 1 1/16-miles on the turf for sophomores; and the $100,000 Forever Together also at 1 1/16-miles on the turf for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

The Saturday, November 28th card boasts four stakes keyed by a pair of Grade 3 tests including the $100,000 Long Island at 11 furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up along with the $100,000 Discovery for at nine furlongs for 3-year-olds. The card is bolstered by the $100,000 Aqueduct Turf Sprint Championship at six furlongs for 3-year-olds and up and the $100,000 Central Park for juveniles at 1 1/16-miles on the turf.

Sunday, November 29 is slated for three stakes, led by the Grade 3, $100,000 Fall Highweight Handicap, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and upward. The card will also feature the $100,000 Autumn Days at six furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up and the $100,000 Tepin at 1 1/16-miles on the turf for juvenile fillies.

Closing Weekend of the Big A fall meet features seven stakes worth $1.4 million beginning on Saturday, December 5 with the 32nd renewal of the Grade 1, $250,000 Cigar Mile for 3-year-olds and up, headlining a lucrative card which includes a pair of prestigious Grade 2, $150,000 nine-furlong events for juveniles in the Remsen and its filly counterpart, the Demoiselle, as well as the Grade 3, $100,000 Go for Wand Handicap for fillies and mares at a mile.

The New York Stallion Stakes Series will offer a pair of rich races for 2-year-olds on Sunday, December 6 with the Great White Way for juvenile males and the Fifth Avenue for juvenile fillies, with purses of $250,000 each. Sunday's Closing Day card will also include the $100,000 Garland of Roses at six furlongs for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up.

Following opening weekend, live racing will be conducted Thursday through Sunday with the exception of Thanksgiving Week, when live racing will not be offered on Thanksgiving Day, November 26.

New York state currently requires all racetracks to operate without spectators in attendance to combat the spread of COVID-19. NYRA will issue updated guidance regarding COVID-19 health and safety protocols for jockeys, trainers and owners in the near future.

America's Day at the Races will present daily television coverage of the Aqueduct fall meet with coverage to air on FOX Sports and MSG Networks.
