OBS October Sale Supplemental Catalog Now Online

The supplemental catalog for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 October Sale is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com and available in printed form at the OBS sales grounds on or about Wednesday, Oct. 7. The two-day sale is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13 and 14.

Three 2-year-olds and two Horses of Racing Age have been supplemented to the two-day sale, and will sell as Hip No.'s 55 – 59. Twenty-seven selected yearlings have been supplemented and will sell as Hip No.'s 243 – 269. Twenty-eight horses have been added to the Open Yearling Sale, selling as Hip No.'s 694 – 721.

The sale begins Tuesday, Oct. 13 at noon with the 2-year-olds in training and horses of racing age section, cataloged as Hip No.'s 1 – 59. The Selected Yearling Sale begins immediately following the horses of racing Age, selling as Hip No.'s 101 – 269. The open yearling sale, now cataloged as Hip No.'s 301 – 721, is set for Wednesday, Oct. 14 and will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The under tack show for the 2-year-olds and horses of racing age is set for Sunday, Oct. 11 and will start at 10 a.m.

The under tack show and sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN and BloodHorse websites.

OBS will again offer online bidding during the October Sale. Buyers will be able to go to the OBS website and register to gain bidding approval, then access the OBS Bidding Screen with their credentials. The online catalog's main page contains a link to a sortable master index providing searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed.

The sortable master index has advanced search and filter capability and allows shortlist creation. A link to instructions for using these features can be found in the index header and a step by step tutorial is available in the index as well.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog, receive updates and results, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. Perfect Happiness Brings $200,000 To Top Keeneland October Digital Sale

Allowance winner Perfect Happiness sold for $200,000 to Flurry Racing Stable to lead Keeneland's October Digital Sale on Thursday, Oct. 1.

Perfect Happiness won an allowance at Ellis Park in August and finished second in her last two starts, both allowance events at Churchill Downs in September.

The 3-year-old filly is by Majesticperfection out of the Divine Park mare Divine Happiness. She was consigned by Brereton C. Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent, as a racing or broodmare prospect.

Paul Martin went to $20,000 to purchase Ames Mister, also from the consignment of Brereton C. Jones/Airdrie Stud, agent. Sold as a racing prospect, the 2-year-old colt by Summer Front out of the Street Boss mare Blushing Touch finished second in a maiden race at Ellis in August.

The October Digital Sale cataloged horses of racing age and yearlings.

Grade 1-Winning Trainer Beau Greely Dies At Age 49

Christopher Beau Greely, a Grade 1-winning trainer and fourth-generation horseman, died Sept. 30 in Redondo Beach, Calif. He was 49.

Born in Lexington, Ky., and raised in nearby Midway, Ky., at his family's Wintergreen Farm, Greely was educated at Baylor School in Chattanooga, South Kent School in Connecticut and the University of Kentucky.

After college, Greely worked under leading French trainer Criquette Head, then relocated to California to work for Richard Mandella.

Greely branched out on his own as a trainer in 1997, and he was active through 2015. He won 131 races for combined earnings of $11,230,842.

His first Grade 1 victories as a trainer came in 2000, when he saddled the Irish-bred Manndar to victories in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes and G1 Manhattan Handicap. He won the G1 Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes with Sligo Bay, and he took the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and Pacific Classic Stakes with Borrego.

Other runners of note for Greely's stable included Grade 2 winners Tres Borrachos, Century City, Grammarian, Takarian, and Five Star Day.

Greely was also active in the breeding industry, founding Wintergreen Stallion Station in Midway with his brother John Joseph Greely IV. John died earlier this year on March 15 at age 54.

In recent years, Greely was involved in underwater and art photography.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Lexington. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to God's Food Pantry (1685 Jaggie Fox Way, Lexington, KY 40511) in response to need for food during the pandemic.

Undefeated Yaupon Ties Stakes Record In Chick Lang Romp

L. William and Corinne Heiligbrodt's Yaupon kept his perfect record intact in impressive fashion Thursday, streaking to a stakes-record four-length triumph in the $200,000 Chick Lang (G3) at Pimlico Race Course.

The 45th running of the six-furlong Chick Lang for 3-year-olds helped launch a spectacular Preakness weekend program of 16 stakes, nine graded, worth $3.35 million in purses over three days featuring the 145th running of Saturday's $1 million Preakness (G1).

Stakes action was kicked off earlier on Thursday's card with upset victories by Hollis in the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint and A Great Time in the $100,000 The Very One, both going five furlongs on the grass.

Favored at 3-5 over eight rivals, Yaupon ($3.20) improved to 4-0 with his second straight graded-stakes triumph following the Amsterdam (G2) Aug. 29 at Saratoga in his previous start. The winning time of 1:09.10 matched Lantana Mob from 2008 for the fastest in stakes history.

Both Yaupon and Lantana Mob came from the barn of Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, who also won the 2018 Chick Lang with 2019 champion sprinter Mitole. It was the first Chick Lang victory for Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.

“Put him on the lead and keep him on the lead, and he keeps running,” Velazquez said.

Velazquez did precisely that, hustling Yaupon to the front from the gate and assuming control through testing splits of 22.77 and 45.11 seconds, pressed to his outside by Arkaan while the rest of the field tried to keep pace. Yaupon was firmly in command as Arkaan dropped back once straightened for home and sprurted away as Double Crown came with a steady run to edge 17-1 long shot Relentless Dancer for third.

“You've got to ride him the first part. For the first three-sixteenths of a mile, I had to ride him just to keep his head on the business,” Velazquez said. “Even at the three-eighths pole I am reminding him, 'Hey, keep your mind on your business.' Then when he switched down the lane then he knew. It was 'OK, time to go.'”

Unraced at 2, Yaupon debuted with a nose victory June 20 at Churchill Downs then rolled by 3 ¾ lengths in a Saratoga allowance July 18, both races coming over older horses. In his first race facing straight 3-year-olds he captured the six-furlong Amsterdam, his stakes debut.

Reeves Thoroughbred Racing's Double Crown won the Roar and Carry Back over the spring and summer at Gulfstream Park, and was exiting a third-place finish in the Smile Sprint (G3) Sept. 5 under regular pilot Cristian Torres, who made the trip north to ride. Double Crown was racing for the first time in Maryland since his debut triumph last September, after which he was purchased privately.

“He always gives 100 percent,” Torres said. “I had a perfect trip. He broke good. I let him settle off the speed. At the three-eighths, he started picking it up very nice and down the stretch, when I got him clear, he was rolling.”

Run as the Hirsch Jacobs Stakes from its inception in 1975 to 2009, the Chick Lang was renamed in honor of the racing industry legend widely known as 'Mr. Preakness,' who passed away in 2010 at age 83.
