The Crown Fits: Liberty Island Eases Home In the Shuka Sho

Given a Yuga Kawada ride befitting a $1.10 (1-10) mortal, Sunday Racing Co. Ltd.'s Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) became the seventh filly to win the Japanese Triple Tiara with a deceptively easy one-length victory in Sunday's G1 Shuka Sho before a packed grandstand of better than 45,000 onlookers at Kyoto Racecourse. Masked Diva (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}), the 12-1 third favourite, flashed home for second ahead of narrow second pick Harper (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}).

Making her first start since smashing her rivals by six lengths in the 2400-metre G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Oaks) some 147 days ago, Liberty Island bounced away nicely from stall six and took up a position in and amongst rivals as the commonly owned Kona Coast (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) took them along over ground officially rated good, but perhaps riding softer given the clods of turf being kicked up. Leaving little to chance, Kawada had Liberty Island in about seventh position and in the clear four or five off the inside passing halfway and the duo was committed to an overland run around the second bend. Asked to circle her rivals with 600 metres standing between her and history, Liberty Island quickly went to the leaders five or six deep on the swing for home, accelerated sharply to put a gap on them at the entrance to the final furlong and reported home a comfortable winner. Masked Diva closed off her final three furlongs in a race-fastest :33.5–Liberty Island was home in :33.6–while Harper just got the better of a photo with Dura (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) to earn a second Classic placing, having finished the distant runner-up in the Oaks.

“I'm grateful that we were able to achieve the Triple Crown,” said Kawada, riding a 25th Group 1 winner on the JRA. “She is a horse with great ability, so I placed top priority on letting her run comfortably and finding a good path for her. I was confident of her victory when we had an open space at the third corner. She has great potential, and her dreams for the future are wide open, but first of all, I would like to praise her for achieving the Triple Crown.”

Named champion of her generation after winning the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies last December, Liberty Island returned in the Apr. 9 G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) and looked to have it all to do in the straight, but rattled home to score a touch cosily. There were no such worries when last seen in the Oaks, as she was waited with until the final 200 metres before blowing the race apart at Tokyo.

Should she have another run this season, options include the sex-restricted G1 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup going 11 furlongs at Kyoto Nov. 12 or a potential clash of the titans with Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in the G1 Japan Cup two weeks late.

Pedigree Notes:

The sadly departed Duramente joins Almond Eye (Jpn)'s sire Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) as sons of the late King Kamehameha (Jpn) to account for a Triple Tiara winner, while King Kamehameha was himself responsible for 2010 Triple Tiara heroine Apapane (Jpn). Duramente's daughter Stars On Earth (Jpn) was on a Triple Tiara bid of her own 12 months ago, but fell just short in third behind Sunday Racing's Stunning Rose (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}).

Yankee Rose, who cost just A$10,000 at the 2015 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale before going on to become a two-time champion and dual Group 1 winner, was acquired privately by the Yoshida family and her progeny have excelled in the sales ring and at the races. Her first foal, the filly Romneya (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), fetched ¥210 million (US$1.9m) from the latter's owner Makoto Kaneko as a foal at the 2019 JRHA Select Sale and her now 2-year-old colt by Lord Kanaloa was the second-dearest offering at the same event in 2021, selling to Danox Co. Ltd for ¥370 million ($2.6m).

Yankee Rose is also responsible for a yearling Kizuna (Jpn) filly and a weanling filly from the first crop of Triple Crown winner Contrail (Jpn). Each has been retained by their breeder.

‘Rising Star’ First Mission Returns Victoriously at Keeneland

10th-Keeneland, $120,000, Alw (NW2$X), Opt. Clm ($80,000), 10-14, 3yo/up, 1 1/16m, 1:45.63, ft, neck.
FIRST MISSION (c, 3, Street Sense–Elude, by Medaglia d'Oro), making his first start since winning this track's GIII Lexington S. during the April meeting, validated 2-5 favoritism–if only just–to give Godolphin a sweep of the late Daily Double. Off alertly from the inside stall, the homebred allowed himself to be taken back to sit in the second flight of horses behind a pace that was slow to materialize. Up into third and remaining glued to the fence entering the far turn following a half-mile that was clocked in just :49.73, First Mission came under a Luis Saez ride with 2 1/2 furlongs to race, but was scrubbed on vigorously to pick up the bridle. Short of running room in upper stretch behind a wall of horses, First Mission was forced to come across the heels of several rivals to find daylight five off the rail with time ticking away and kicked home gamely to prevail. The homebred earned a 96 Beyer on Fair Grounds sprint debut Feb. 18, good for only second to 'Rising Star' Bishops Bay (Uncle Mo) before dusting rivals by 6 1/2 lengths to pick up his own 'Rising Star' laurels. After besting future GI Woody Stephens S. hero Arabian Lion (Justify) in the Lexington, First Mission was being pointed to a start in the GI Preakness S., but a left hind issue forced his withdrawal 36 hours prior to the race. A daughter of Argentinan champion Forty Marchanta (Arg) (Roar), Elude is bred on that same Medaglia d'Oro cross over Forty Niner mares that has resulted in the likes of Rachel Alexandra, Songbird and Elate, to name a few. The mare was purchased by Oussama Aboughazale's International Equities Holding for $105,000 infoal to Street Sense at Keeneland January in 2022 and that full-brother to First Mission was hammered down to Richard Santulli's Colts Neck Stable for $500,000 at Keeneland September last month. Purloin Brings Up a Century of Winners for Arrogate

PURLOIN (f, 2, Arrogate–Smooth Path, by Scat Daddy), a $200,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $400,000 OBS April breezer, was bet down to 6-5 favoritism in a race scratched down to just four entrants when it was washed onto the sloppy main track. Content to trail, but always in touch beneath Kendrick Carmouche, the gray filly raced two wide around the turn, came out and around rivals into the lane and pulled clear in the final eighth of a mile to open her account by 1 1/2 lengths at first asking and become the 100th individual winner for her late sire (by Unbridled's Song). Grantley Acres purchased the unraced Smooth Path, a half-sister to the ill-fated MSW Taraz (Into Mischief), for $160,000 with this filly in utero at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The mare's foal of 2022, a filly by Authentic, was a $250,000 purchase out of last year's FTKNOV sale and was hammered down to FMQ Stables for $400,000 at KEESEP last month. Smooth Path produced a Candy Ride (Arg) filly this season and was bred to Nyquist and Speightstown. Dornoch, Full-Bro To Mage, Dons Cap and Gown at Keeneland

6th-Keeneland, $99,588, Msw, 10-14, 2yo, 1 1/16m, 1:45, ft, 6 1/2 lengths.
DORNOCH (c, 2, Good Magic–Puca {SW & GSP, $299,406}, by Big Brown) had run well in each of his first two career starts, including a runner-up effort in the Sapling S. in his most recent trip to the races Aug. 26, and made good on a promise of 1-2 favoritism to break his maiden in style Saturday at Keeneland. The full-brother to GI Kentucky Derby hero Mage, GISW, $2,507,450; and half to Gunning (Gun Runner), MSP, $278,835,  was away in good order from gate two and led into the first turn as they stacked up six deep to his outside. Pressed along by Lat Long (Liam's Map) as they raced into the backstretch, the $325,000 Keeneland September grad was past the half-mile in :47.70 for Luis Saez and was quietly and confidently ridden into the second bend. Asked to stretch passing the three-sixteenths marker, Dornoch raced a touch greenly and a bit awkwardly on his left lead, but pulled readily clear despite wandering about to score by a widening 6 1/2 lengths. The final time was 1.34 seconds faster than what was recorded by Stretch Ride in the first division of this two-turn maiden in race three. Former 'TDN Rising Star' Puca was a stakes winner and runner-up in the 2015 GII Gazelle S. and was purchased by Robert Clay's Grandview Equine for $475,000 carrying the filly that would become Gunning at Fasig-Tipton November in 2018. A half-sister to GISW Finnegans Wake (Powerscourt {GB}), Puca is also the dam of a yearling McKinzie colt that sold to Mayberry Farm for $1.2 million at last month's Keeneland September sale and the mare sells at the upcoming Keeneland November Sale carrying a full-sibling to Mage and Dornoch through Case Clay Thoroughbred Management as hip 191.
