Pimlico Special Winner Harpers First Ride Among 245 Pre-Entries For Oct. 24 Maryland Million Day

Harpers First Ride, recent upset winner of the historic Pimlico Special (G3), three defending champions and a total of seven past winners are among 245 pre-entries in 12 stakes on the 35th annual Jim McKay Maryland Million Day program Saturday, Oct. 24 at Laurel Park.

Five of the races on the Maryland Million program are scheduled to be contested over Laurel's world-class turf course, including the return of the $100,000 Turf Sprint following an eight-year absence. Entries will be taken and post positions drawn Wednesday, Oct. 21.

First race post time on Maryland Million Day is 11:25 a.m.

MCA Racing Stable's Harpers First Ride sprung a front-running upset of favored Triple Crown-tested Owendale in the 1 3/16-mile Pimlico Special Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course, for his second consecutive stakes win following the 1 1/16-mile Deputed Testamony Sept. 5 at Laurel, where the 4-year-old gelding owns six wins from seven career starts for Claudio Gonzalez, Maryland's leading trainer the past three years.

Harpers First Ride is among 16 pre-entries to the $150,000 Classic, the richest race on the Maryland Million program, for 3-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles. Also pre-entered are defending champion Forest Fire, trained by Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winner John Servis; multiple stakes winner Cordmaker, third by two necks in the 2019 Pimlico Special; Laddie Liam, unraced since winning the 2019 Maryland Juvenile Futurity last December for trainer Hugh McMahon, eight wins shy of 1,000 for his career; 2019 Heft Stakes winner Monday Morning Qb; 2019 Classic runner-up Prendimi; and 2019 Iowa Derby winner Top Line Growth, four-for-four lifetime at Laurel.

Big Bertha Stable and Stormy Stable's Taco Supream is pre-entered to defend his title in the $100,000 Sprint for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs. Trained by Damon Dilodovico, who upset the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) with Laki Oct. 3 at Pimlico, Taco Supream was most recently sixth in the six-furlong Polynesian Sept. 5 at Laurel to Eastern Bay, beaten a nose in the De Francis and one of four Sprint pre-entrants trained by Gonzalez.

Also prominent among 24 Sprint pre-entrants are Linda Zang's homebred Lewisfield, Maryland's champion sprinter of 2019 and winner of the 2018 Sprint for trainer Jeff Zunco; multiple stakes winner Introduced, whose four wins from seven tries at Laurel include the 2019 Miss Disco Stakes; and multiple stakes-placed Whereshetoldmetogo.

Kevin P. Morgan's Maryland homebred Mr. d'Angelo sprung a 17-1 upset in last year's $100,000 Turf for 3-year-olds and up traveling 1 1/8 miles, and tops 19 pre-entries for 2020. Second by a neck in an open one-mile allowance Sept. 17 at Laurel, the 4-year-old gelding is joined by Somekindofmagician and Pretty Good Year, respectively second and third in last year's Turf, separated by a half-length; and Nick Papagiorgio, 12-for-16 in the money at Laurel including six wins.

A total of 28 horses were pre-entered in the $100,000 Distaff for fillies and mares 3 and older sprinting seven furlongs, led by Hello Beautiful and Limited View, whose multiple stakes wins include the 2019 and 2017 Maryland Million Lassie, respectively; three-time stakes-winning 4-year-old Las Setas; Never Enough Time, winner of the Alma North at Laurel and Skipat at Pimlico in her last two starts; 2020 Delaware Oaks (G3) winner Project Whiskey; stakes winner Artful Splatter; and Coconut Cake, riding a three-race win streak; and Introduced.

The $100,000 Ladies for fillies and mares 3 and up going 1 1/8 miles on the grass received 14 pre-entries including No Mo Lady, third in the 1 1/16-mile Gallorette (G3) last out Oct. 3 at Pimlico; Artful Splatter, upset winner over Anna's Bandit in the Geisha Stakes Jan. 20 over Laurel's main track; Shifra Magician, who has earned all seven of her career wins on the turf and was fourth, beaten a half-length, in last year's Maryland Million Turf Distaff Starter Handicap; and Something Magical, fourth in the 2019 Ladies.

Last run in 2012 and won in each of its final three years by late Mid-Atlantic legend Ben's Cat, the $100,000 Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds and up going 5 ½ furlongs drew 27 pre-entries in its return, led by A Great Time, a dramatic come-from-behind winner of the five-furlong The Very One Oct. 1 at Pimlico and Mike Trombetta-trained stablemate Oldies But Goodies, winner of the 2019 Ben's Cat Stakes sprinting on grass; and So Street, Love You Much and Joseph, respectively second, third and fifth in the 5 ½-furlong Laurel Dash Sept. 7.

Most popular among horsemen was the $100,000 Lassie for 2-year-old fillies, which attracted 31 pre-entries led by Lucky 7 Stables' Street Lute, undefeated in two starts including the Small Wonder Stakes Sept. 26 at Delaware Park. Street Lute is also among 24 pre-entries to the $100,000 Nursery for 2-year-olds, along with Jamestown Stakes winner Kenny Had a Notion and First State Dash winner Singlino. Both the Lassie and Nursery are contested at six furlongs.

Back for the fourth straight year are the $50,000 Turf Starter Handicap for 3-year-olds and up, which drew 20 nominations including 2018 winner Barin, and $50,000 Turf Distaff Starter Handicap for fillies and mares 3 and older, both at 1 1/8 miles on the grass.

Rounding out the stakes action are the $40,000 Distaff Starter Handicap for fillies and mares 3 and older and the $40,000 Starter Handicap for 3-year-olds and up, both sprinting seven furlongs.

Edgar Prado leads all Maryland Million jockeys with 18 wins, one more than fellow Hall of Famer Ramon Dominguez. Dale Capuano and Hall of Famer King Leatherbury, who together have combined for more than 10,000 career victories, rank 1-2 among Maryland Million trainers with 11 and 10 wins, respectively.

Named for the late Hall of Fame and 13-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster who helped launch the groundbreaking concept in 1986, the Jim McKay Maryland Million has evolved into the second-biggest day on the state's racing calendar behind only the Preakness Stakes (G1). 'Maryland's Day at the Races' celebrates the stallions who stand in the state as well as a rich and diverse racing history that dates back to the founding of the Maryland Jockey Club in 1743.

Four Six-Figure Lots On Opening Day Of Tattersalls October Book 3

Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale got off to a strong start with honors split amongst four yearlings who all realized 130,000 guineas (US$176,093).

The first of the four yearlings to sell for 130,000 guineas (US$176,093) was the Mehmas filly out of the Street Cry mare Araajmh who was knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock's Tom Goff. Araajmh is a daughter of the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes winner Rajeem and a half-sister to last year's Group 2 Duke of York Stakes winner Invincible Army.

“I saw her in the rain yesterday and again this morning, and she is an absolute star. Ed Dunlop rang me early this morning from Warren Hill and asked if anything was in early, these things happen fast. She is a lovely mover, I bought one by the sire on Monday and he is an absolute revelation,” said Goff.

Mehmas, who stands at Roger O'Callaghan's Tally-Ho Stud, has been enjoying a stellar year with his first runners which have included the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes winner Supremacy, the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes winner Minzaal and the Listed winners Acklam Express and Method.

The chestnut filly was sold by Loughmore Stables' Kitty Fitzpatrick who commented: “She was bought in partnership with Luke Barry for €11,000 (US$12,880), she is a lovely filly and we were delighted from the day we bought her. Obviously Mehmas has done what he has done, which is a huge help. She behaved like a queen and all the right lads were on her.

“I have a mare in-foal to the sire on the back of this filly, so hopefully she is lucky for new connections.”

Of coming into this sale, Fitzpatrick added: “Book 2 was very strong, when you see what is going in the world, it was amazing. We have to be grateful that we are here at all trading, long may it last!

“I was always confident there would be a turn in her, but I didn't think she'd make that sort of money! I liked her a lot, so I am not gobsmacked as I have thought a lot of this filly all the way through. She was a lovely foal, had a big walk, strength and was always a very strong powerful filly.”

Explaining how the pinhook buying works with Luke Barry's Manister House Stud, she said: “We spilt the foals up 50/50 with Manister House, and the lads at home have done a great job. It couldn't be done without them.”

Hazelwood Bloodstock's Night Of Thunder Colt Sells for 130,000 Guineas

Adrian and Philippa O'Brien's Hazelwood Bloodstock were responsible for the second six-figure yearling of the day when their Night of Thunder colt out of the Duke of Marmalade mare Dominike sold for 130,000 guineas (US$176,093) to the bid of Brendan Holland's Grove Stud.

The sale represented an impressive pinhooking profit for his owners, who had purchased him via agent Troy Steve for 20,000 guineas (US$27,091) at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

“He has been bought to breeze. He is by a leading sire, he is a good type and I have been lucky with the sire,” commented Holland. “This is a lovely clean-limbed horse with plenty of scope, I think he would have matched up with the horses sold earlier this week.

“The strong market gives everyone confidence for the foal market and for the spring too, this has helped.”

Hazelwood Bloodstock have previously topped Books 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sale and principal Adrian O'Brien was very pleased with their decision to target Book 3 with this colt.

“It is all about Night of Thunder. He has been sensational on the track this season and we brought this horse to Book 3 as we thought he'd stand out a bit. It's a good sale and you get well paid if you bring the right horse.”

Farhh Colt Stars for Car Colston Hall Stud

The third of the four lots to realize 130,000 guineas (US$176,093) was the Farhh colt out of the Nathaniel mare Fair Daughter. Consigned by Nicholas and Jane Forman-Hardy's Car Colston Hall Stud, the pedigree is full of Group 1 winners bred by the Nottinghamshire nursery including the Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House, the American Oaks winner Ticker Tape, the Middle Park Stakes winner Reckless Abandon and the Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Brando.

The February-born colt was purchased by Stroud Coleman's Matt Coleman to race in France.

“It is a wonderful family, Car Colston is a fantastic breeder and a stakes horse seems to pop up on this page every year so we are delighted to get him, and he has been bought for a client to race in France,” said Coleman.

“He is just a lovely moving horse, and obviously Farhh's statistics are incredible. He is a lovely staying prospect and will be more a three-year-old than a two-year-old, but we were looking for a really nice middle-distance type.”

Stud manager Jonathon Smithers was all smiles, commenting: “We are delighted, it is a first foal out of the mare, the penultimate daughter out of the foundation mare Weiner Wald. It is a fantastic chance to get the mare off and running, Farhh's page is fantastic and we wish the colt's new owners the best of luck.”

Whilst the pedigree hardly needs any updates, there was a new stakes winner for the family just last week when the two-year-old colt Erasmo, out of Sant Elena, a granddaughter of Weiner Wald, won a listed race at Chantilly on just his third start.

“He is a big strong foal, just glad he made that. He showed himself really well here,” added Smithers.

Clipper Logistics Buys Sister to Main Desire

The fourth and final lot to realize 130,000 guineas (US$176,093) for the day was the Churchill half-sister to the dual Listed winner Main Desire. Consigned to the sale by Keith Harte on behalf of Max Ervine, the filly was knocked down to Ballyhane Stud's Joe Foley on behalf of Steve Parkin's Clipper Logistics.

“The filly is lovely, she looks very fast, the mare was very fast,” said Foley.

“We bought Main Desire at Fairyhouse and she was very fast. She was second favorite for the Queen Mary but broke her cannon bone, and had a good character to come back from that and win the Listed Westow Stakes on her next start.

“The mare comes from a high-class US tap root family and, though she has gone to 'distancey' stallions, she has bred very fast horses by the likes of High Chaparral, New Approach and Mastercraftsman. We have followed them all and they have all been big, rangy horses.

“We love Main Desire, she is one of our favorites. She has got a Frankel foal and is in-foal to Churchill. We were very interested to see this filly this morning, and we loved her, she looks like a speedball and has a lot of Churchill quality about her.”

The daughter of the Orientate mare Purple Glow was consigned by Keith Harte, who in the last year has bought a farm near Finchingfield, North Essex.

“This is the best yearling result we have had so far from the new farm, which is around 25 miles from here,” said Harte. “Max has been selling with us for years, he is a great breeder. We sold Wichita for him.”

Harte added: “I am delighted that Joe has bought the filly as he has made the family. The filly came to us a couple of weeks ago from Max's farm and she has been straightforward and easy to do. Everyone who has seen her has loved her and she looks a two-year-old, just like her sister. She has a big back-end on her, has a good attitude but wants to get on with the job, I am sure she'll want to run. The mare has only had the one filly and she was a stakes horse.”

Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.

Taylor Made Stallions Announces 2021 Stallion Roster, Reduced Fees

Taylor Made Stallions has set its 2021 stallion roster and has reduced fees on most of the stallions for the upcoming breeding season.

The roster is led by Not This Time, a leading first-crop sire in multiple categories, who will stand for $40,000 S&N. Joining Not This Time on the roster are Instagrand (new in 2021), Mshawish, and Midnight Storm, who will all stand for $7,500 S&N—Mshawish and Midnight Storm both stood for $10,000 this past breeding season. Rounding out the roster is Daddy Long Legs who will stand for $5,000 S&N after standing last season for $7,500.

Not This Time's offspring have starred in the auction ring and on the racetrack. He was the No. 1 First-Crop Sire by 2-year-old average: $175,216; led by Princess Noor who sold for $1.35 million to top the OBS Spring Sale. It was the highest price ever for a 2-year-old by a freshman sire at OBS. Not This Time's second-crop yearlings this year have included 13 that sold for $200,000 or more with two session toppers at Keeneland September and a $225,000 sale-topping filly this week at OBS October.

It is no surprise that Not This Time's first 2-year-olds have come out running. He is represented by a crop-best 14 winners, including unbeaten and untested Grade 1 winner Princess Noor, a leading contender for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Princess Noor was a breathtaking 6 1/2-length winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes Sept. 6, and an equally impressive winner of the G2 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita in her next outing on Sept. 26 for owner Zedan Racing Stables and trainer Bob Baffert. She announced her arrival in the division being named a TDN Rising Star with an eye-catching score in a Del Mar maiden special weight in her career debut Aug. 22.

Not This Time is also represented by undefeated stakes winner Dirty Dangle, winner of the Woodbine Cares Stakes on Sept. 19, and Graded stakes-placed Hopeful Princess, third in the G3 Schuylerville Stakes at Saratoga.

On the racetrack, Not This Time was a dominating winner of the 2016 G3 Iroquois Stakes and was runner-up in that year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Not This Time is the most brilliant 2-year-old ever sired by sire of sires Giant's Causeway and he is a half-brother to Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam's Map.

New for 2021 is Instagrand, a graded stakes-winning son of leading sire Into Mischief. A $1.2-million purchase at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, Instagrand made an auspicious career debut, earning TDN Rising Star status with a jaw-dropping 10-length romp at Los Alamitos for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. His final time of :56 for the five furlongs was just .32 of a second off the track record.

He followed up his sparkling debut win with another scintillating effort in his next start, winning Del Mar's G2 Best Pal Stakes by 10 1/4 lengths in wire-to-wire fashion. Nearly identical to his debut score, Instagrand assumed command at the break of the six-furlong test and powered away impressively through the lane to win as he pleased without ever being challenged.

Mshawish, Medaglia d'Oro's only Grade 1 winner on dirt and turf and his fastest dirt miler, is represented by seven first-crop winners. Among them, Arabian Prince, a debut maiden special weight winner at Churchill Downs; Miss Wild, a debut winner at Monmouth Park by 15 lengths, and additional maiden special weight winners Hitch a Ride and Franz Josef.

Daddy Long Legs, a champion first-crop sire in Chile, is a multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire by Scat Daddy. Numbered among his eight first-crop stakes horses was 2-year-old champion colt Fallen From Heaven, a Grade 1 winner on dirt and a Grade 2 winner on turf. Daddy Long Legs was a multiple graded stakes winner on multiple surfaces.

Midnight Storm, a brilliantly fast Grade 1 winner by Pioneerof the Nile, was a seven-time graded stakes winner who earned $1,783,110 in a stellar racing career. He was the No. 1 freshman sire by yearling average for stallions standing under $20,000, and he saw first yearlings sell this year for $200,000 to Maverick Racing, $185,000 to Nicoma Bloodstock, and $180,000 to Woodford Thoroughbreds. He will have first-crop 2-year-olds in 2021.

The 2021 roster of stallions and fees for Taylor Made Stallions are as follows:

Stallion S&N Fee
Not This Time $40,000
Daddy Long Legs $5,000
Instagrand-New $7,500
Midnight Storm $7,500
Mshawish $7,500

Australia: The World’s Best Turf Sprinters Ready For The Everest

In my new role as announcer at Los Alamitos Race Course, I marvel at the raw speed of Quarter Horses. The Thoroughbred equivalent will be on display at Randwick this Friday night, as Australia's elite sprinters contest the fourth running of The Everest. The world's richest turf race carries a purse of AU$15 million (US$10.8 million) and is part of a recently introduced Pick 7 wager that can be played for just 20c per combination and has a $10,000 pool guarantee this Friday night.

Although the two-mile Melbourne Cup is the nation's most famous race, Australia's forté is actually producing the world's best turf sprinters. While American fans are dubious of anything unproven on U.S. soil, the Breeders' Cup is poorly timed from the standpoint of Australia's rich “Spring Carnival.” However, Aussie sprinters have succeeded in other global arenas such as Royal Ascot, Dubai and Hong Kong. The Everest, at six furlongs, is framed around the concept of slot holders seeking deals with connections of the best available horses. In a flashy display of innovation and savvy marketing, the race that sports the name of the world's highest peak had its post position draw conducted on the glass-bottomed Sky Deck at the top of Sydney Tower (which dwarfs Seattle's Space Needle but is slightly smaller than America's tallest observation tower, the Stratosphere in Las Vegas).

Just as the Sydney Tower has a revolving restaurant, the race itself revolves around Nature Strip (7-2 equal favorite). Recently crowned Australian Horse of the Year for a trio of Group 1 wins in 2019/20, Nature Strip is currently tied for sixth in the Longines World's Best Racehorse rankings (with Almond Eye, Authentic, and Enable). However, Nature Strip's stock has slumped with two losses to begin his 6-year-old season.

As short as 3-2 in Future Book wagering for The Everest a month ago, the gelding exited his most recent defeat with mucus in his trachea. That followed his well publicized dumping of jockey James McDonald at the start of a training race, requiring a subsequent trial to the stewards' satisfaction. Nature Strip retains the confidence of both McDonald, who declares his coat “is definitely looking a bit better,” and trainer Chris Waller, whose vet is “very happy with his blood levels.”

Post positions are potentially important, as the best trip could well decide the outcome among so many top-caliber sprinters. Fortune has smiled upon Nature Strip, Classique Legend (7-2 equal favorite) and Gytrash (6-1), who have drawn adjacent gates in the middle of the field. However, the task of brilliant last-start winner Libertini (8-1) was complicated when the mare drew the extreme outside. Classique Legend was an untapped talent when an unlucky sixth in The Everest last year. More recently, the gray unleashed an electrifying burst to win off a layoff, then was trapped wide without cover when a creditable second.

Classique Legend is conditioned by 82-year-old Les Bridge, who hopes to cap a Melbourne Cup-winning career with a victory by what he considers the best horse he's trained. Adelaide-based Gytrash (pronounced gee-trah) has a 92-year-old part-owner named Valerie Gordon, who has been a racing fan for 84 years. Valerie would spend her share of one of the world's biggest purses “getting the house painted and getting a new bed … and I might get another horse.” Gytrash has been Australia's most consistent topline sprinter of the past twelve months, and won his prep race for The Everest at first asking the reverse way of going (right-handed).

Next in the betting is a massive equine specimen sporting an appropriate name. Behemoth (9-1) is one of horse racing's all-time bargain buys: the winner of $1.6 million was purchased as a yearling for a paltry $6,000. (Incongruously, he cost $120,000 a year earlier as a weanling!) Behemoth has won consecutive Group 1s in Melbourne at seven furlongs, but was unplaced in his only two Sydney races in the opposite (clockwise) direction.

In Behemoth's case, an inside gate (2) might not make for the most comfortable transit, and the distance cutback to six furlongs perhaps makes him worth risking when framing Pick-7 tickets. At longer odds, Trekking (16-1) holds appeal: the Godolphin sprinter, who finished third in this race last year, might appreciate being kept a bit fresher leading into the 2020 renewal … and would certainly be an aptly named winner of The Everest.

Here is a suggested ticket for the 20c Pick-7, which spans the final seven races on Friday's card:

Race 4 – # 1, 9

Race 5 – # 1, 5, 14

Race 6 – # 1, 4

Race 7 – # 1, 2, 3, 7

Race 8 – # 2

Race 9 – # 2, 3, 7, 10

Race 10 – # 1, 6

Total cost: $76.80

The Pick 7 wager is available via all major ADW platforms such as TVG, TwinSpiresXpressbet, NYRABets, WatchandWagerHPIbetAmWager, and BetAmerica. The Randwick card will be broadcast live on TVG this Friday night with live crosses to Sky Racing World's Jason Witham trackside (First Post: 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT) . All races will also be live-streamed in HD with past performances available for free at skyracingworld.com and major ADW platforms.

A native of Brisbane, Australia, Michael Wrona has called races in six countries. Michael's vast U.S. experience includes; race calling at Los Alamitos, Hollywood Park, Arlington and Santa Anita, calling the 2000 Preakness on a national radio network and the 2016 Breeders' Cup on the International simulcast network. Michael also performed a race call voiceover for a Seinfeld episode called The Subway.
