Baffert Trio Draws Outside, Tiz The Law Inside For 2020 Breeders’ Cup Classic

A total of 184 horses were entered in the 2020 edition of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, scheduled for Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., including 37 international contenders.

The $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic headlines the event, with a high-powered field of 10 ready to face off over 1 1/4 miles. Trainer Bob Baffert's strong trio will break from the three outside posts: Awesome Again winner Improbable from gate eight (5-2 favorite), Kentucky Derby winner Authentic from gate nine (6-1), and Pacific Classic winner Maximum Security from gate ten (7-2).

Meanwhile, Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Tiz the Law will be nearer to the rail in post two. Trained by Barclay Tagg, the 3-year-old son of Constitution was made the second choice on the morning line at 3-1.

Last year's G1 Clark winner Tom's d'Etat will break from post four at odds of 6-1 for trainer Al Stall, Jr., on the 10-year anniversary of his upset victory with Blame over Zenyatta.

By My Standards has put together a strong campaign in 2020 as well, with three Grade 2 wins and a second to Improbable in the G1 Whitney to his credit. The Bret Calhoun trainee will break from post three at 10-1 on the morning line.

Distaff Notes: McPeek Comfortable Choosing ‘Lighter’ Breeders’ Cup Race For Swiss Skydiver

Ce Ce – Bo Hirsch's Ce Ce galloped on the Keeneland training track the morning after arriving from her home base at Santa Anita.

“All of my horses shipped well and came out of their last works well,” said trainer Michael McCarthy, whose other Breeders' Cup pre-entrants are Speech (Filly & Mare Sprint), Rushie (Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile) and Rombauer (TVG Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance).

Ce Ce, fourth in the Derby City Distaff on Sept. 5 in her initial trip to Kentucky, had worked 5f in 59 3/5 at Santa Anita on Friday.

Dunbar Road – Peter Brant's Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff contender Dunbar Road walked the Belmont Park barn of trainer Chad Brown one day after breezing 5f in 1:00 3/5 and then shipped from New York to Kentucky.

Per her conditioner, the daughter of Quality Road is among the remaining nine of Brown's 11-strong Breeders' Cup brigade that arrived late Monday morning. Front Run the Fed (Turf Sprint) and Raging Bull (Mile) were already on the grounds in Keeneland's Barn 64 and each jogged.

Harvest Moon – Alice Bamford and Michael Tabor's Harvest Moon jogged on the Keeneland training track for trainer Simon Callaghan.

Harvest Moon had worked 5f in 1:01 at Keeneland Saturday and today's activity marked her return to the track.
“She came out of the work well,” Callaghan said. “She may do the same thing tomorrow (come to the training track) because the conditions are expected to be the same.”

Horologist – Bill Mott-trained Beldame winner Horologist had an easy day of it on Monday, sticking to Barn 60 at Keeneland one day after breezing 4f in 47 2/5.

“She worked yesterday, like Frank's Rockette,” said Riley Mott, assistant trainer. “She came back good and just walked. All in all, we're in good shape.”

Frank's Rockette, who breezed the same distance in 49 flat, will enter the Breeders' Cup Sprint in lieu of the Filly & Mare Sprint, per Mott.

Lady Kate – Lady Kate, fourth in Keeneland's Spinster on Oct. 4, is scheduled to arrive at Keeneland Wednesday morning after training at Churchill Downs. The 4yo daughter of Bernardini breezed 4f in :48 1/5 at Churchill Downs on Oct. 31.

“She is doing great and we are looking forward to the Breeders' Cup,” trainer Eddie Kenneally said.

Monomoy Girl – The 2018 Longines Distaff winner Monomoy Girl had her first gallop over the Keeneland track Monday morning. She put in her final work at her Churchill Downs base Saturday and then vanned over to Keeneland Sunday afternoon.

“I don't think I've seen her gallop any better,” trainer Brad Cox said. “She looked really good.”

Ollie's Candy – Paul and Karen Eggert's Ollie's Candy jogged once around the main track at Keeneland with Juan Leyva, assistant to John Sadler aboard.

Ollie's Candy, runner-up here in the Juddmonte Spinster Oct. 4, had worked 6f in 1:11 on Saturday that was her second work since the Spinster. Monday's exercise marked her return to the track.

Sadler is expected to be at the barn Tuesday morning.

Point of Honor – Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Stetson Racing LLC's Point of Honor galloped 1 1/4m over Keeneland's main track in preparation for a start in the Longines Distaff.

“She's going to be a bit of a long shot in this race, but she's training as well as she ever has,” trainer George Weaver said.

Swiss Skydiver – Peter Callahan's Preakness Stakes winner Swiss Skydiver made a favorable impression coming on to the track a little before 8 a.m. and jogging once around the main track under jockey Robby Albarado.

Trainer Kenny McPeek said the decision to go into the Distaff was easy compared to deciding whether to go in the Preakness against straight 3-year-olds or the Spinster against older fillies and mares.

“This was a relatively easy decision compared to the Preakness,” McPeek said. “I like to keep my horses within their generations. I like to think of the 2-year-old year as the high school level, the 3-year-old year as the college level and 4-year-olds and up is the pros. The Classic is a very deep field of quality older horses. The Distaff seems a little lighter. I think she's ready to show how good she is against older horses.”

Valiance – Valiance, who capped a three-race winning streak with her victory in the Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 4, arrived at Blue Grass Airport across the road from Keeneland at approximately 10 a.m. Also in the group from Belmont Park were trainer Todd Pletcher's Breeders' Cup pre-entrants Mutasaabeq (Juvenile Turf), Union Gables (Juvenile Turf Sprint) and Likeable (Juvenile).
Halladay (Mile) was expected to arrive from Belmont on a later flight Monday afternoon.

Dutton Voted 2020’s Horse Of The Meet At Emerald Downs

Dutton, undefeated in three starts including two stakes, was voted the 2020 Emerald Downs Horse of the Meeting.

Trained by Howard Belvoir and ridden by Jennifer Whitaker, Dutton notched victories in the Gottstein Futurity and WTBOA Lads Stakes and finished the campaign three for three with a meet-leading $71,500 for Rising Star Stable VIII.

A Washington-bred by Noosito, Dutton debuted Aug. 27 with an overwhelming 9-length victory in the WTBOA Lads at 6 ½ furlongs, followed by a 14-length triumph against allowance foes at 6 furlongs. In the Gottstein, Dutton was racing head and head with Coastal Kid when the latter ducked out sharply, allowing Dutton to cruise home by 2 ¼ lengths in 1:43.15 for a mile and one-sixteenth.

In addition to Horse of the Meeting, Dutton was honored as the meet's Top Washington-Bred. He is the 16th Washington-bred in 25 seasons to win Horse of the Meeting and joins Name for Norm (1996) as the only 2-year-olds to win the honor.

Alittlelesstalk and Unmachable also received votes for Horse of the Meeting and Top Washington-Bred. In fact, all three finished with two stakes wins and an allowance victory on their resumes.

Alittlelesstalk (4-3-1-0-$63,550) won races short and long, dominating the Emerald Distaff and prevailing in the Washington Cup Filly and Mare Stakes along with an early-season allowance dash. A daughter of 2004 Washington Horse of the Year Demon Warlock trained by Roddina Barrett, Alittlelesstalk was unanimously voted Top Older Filly or Mare. In 2019 she was voted Top 3-Year-Old Filly, and her overall Emerald Downs' record s 7-4-0 in 14 starts for owners Tim Floyd, Kelly Dougan and Barrett.

Unmachable (5-3-1-1-$65,225) also was versatile, winning the Seattle Slew Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs and Muckleshoot Tribal Classic vs. older horses at a mile and one-sixteenth. Trained by Jack McCartney for owner Tawnja Elison, the son of Macho Uno was voted Top 3-Year-Old Male.

Trainer Frank Lucarelli and owners Chad Christensen & Josh McKee enjoyed a smashing season with Elliott Bay, voted Top Older Horse and Top Sprinter, and Time for Gold, voted Top 2-Year-Old Filly for dominating victories in the Angie C Stakes and Barbara Shinpoch Stakes.

Daffodil Sweet, trained by Chris Stenslie and owned by Jody Peetz and Steve Shimizu, scored three victories including a score in the Coca-Cola Stakes and was voted Top 3-Year-Old Filly.

Omache Kid, the only horse to win four races, was voted Top Claimer.

Alex Cruz captured the riding title with 72 wins, 20 more than runner-up Juan Gutierrez, capping his inaugural Emerald Downs' season with five wins on closing night. Cruz also rode at least one winner the final 25 days of the season (Aug. 6 to Oct. 29).

Lucarelli won his second straight training title and seventh overall while Christensen, his main client, repeated as the track's leading owner. Lucarelli saddled 42 winners in 38 days while Christensen, who raced horses in partnership with McKee, topped the owners' standings with 24 wins.

Gutierrez was voted Top Riding Achievement for overtaking Gallyn Mitchell as Emerald Downs' all-time leading jockey. Historic victory No. 1,420 came aboard 5-year-old mare Stay in Grace on Oct. 14.

The Longacres Mile, in which the Blaine Wright-trained Anothertwistafate returned from a 16-month layoff to dominate by 4 ¼-lengths, was voted Race of the Meeting.

Nick Lowe was the leading Quarter Horse trainer for a second consecutive season and swept all three stakes Aug. 20.

Trainers Jorge Rosales and Sharon Ross received the Martin Durkan Award for leadership, cooperation and sportsmanship, while Cerapio Figueroa was voted the Lindy Award by his fellow riders for accomplishment and sportsmanship throughout the meeting.

Other awards included Stephanie Fiorito being named 2020 Exercise Rider of the Year and Taylor Brady being chosen as Jockeys Valet of the Year.

Harbor the Gold was the leading stallion for the seventh straight year and ninth in the last 10, and surpassed Slewdledo as Emerald Downs' all-time leading sire.

Multiple Graded Winner Yorkton Retired To Crestwood Farm

Yorkton, a multiple graded stakes winner by top-class sire Speightstown, will enter stud at Pope McLean's Crestwood Farm in 2021. He will stand his first year at stud for $5,000 LF, and breeders will be offered a $1-million breeders' incentive program.

Bred and raced by Chiefswood Stables, Limited, Robert Krembil said, “Yorkton comes from an elite family of Grade 1 winners, champions and sires. Yorkton showed superior athleticism and brilliant speed during his racing career, winning at distances from [six furlongs] to a mile. Chiefswood Stables is committing a significant number of our well-bred broodmares to Yorkton and look forward to giving him every chance to succeed.”

“We are very excited to add Yorkton to our stallion roster” said Marc McLean. “In addition to being an impressive racehorse from a top female family, Yorkton is an outstanding and correct physical with great muscling and size. Yorkton's trainer, Stuart Simon remarked, “Yorkton was a classy and versatile horse to train. He possessed brilliant speed which carried him to graded stakes wins and placings on three different surfaces.”

Yorkton displayed precocity, front running speed, durability and class. He broke his maiden at two, and won stakes races at three, four, and five. Yorkton's career included stakes victories from 6 1/2 furlongs and up to a mile, with a career top Beyer Speed Figure of 103. Yorkton won or placed in 10 stakes races, with earnings of $546,332.
