Three Horses Lead Keeneland November’s Fourth Session At $300,000

Three horses – Quality Heat, Sex Symbol and a weanling colt from the first crop of Mendelssohn – each sold for $300,000 to top results of Thursday's fourth session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Keeneland sold 227 horses for $13,153,000 on Thursday, for an average of $57,943 and a median of $42,000.

Cumulatively through four sessions of the 10-day auction, 748 horses grossed $115,681,000, for an average of $154,654 and a median of $90,000.

Bluewater Sales, agent, consigned Quality Heat and Sex Symbol.

Springbord Farm purchased Quality Heat, a stakes-placed 3-year-old filly by Quality Road. Cataloged as a racing or broodmare prospect, she is a full sister to Grade 2 winner Frank Conversation and from the family of Grade 1 winners Unusual Suspect and Golden Doc A. Her dam is the stakes-placed Unusual Heat mare Rushen Heat.

Springbord, which also paid $55,000 for a weanling filly by Mastery consigned by Bluewater, was the session's leading buyer, spending $355,000 for two horses.

Green Lantern Stables/Patrick Masson, agent, acquired Sex Symbol, a 3-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo carrying her first foal by City of Light. Out of Grade 1 winner Icon Project, Sex Symbol is a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Fashion Business and from the family of Grade 1 winner La Gueriere and Grade 2 winners and sires Lasting Approval and Munnings.

The $300,000 Mendelssohn weanling sold to Larry Best's OXO Equine. Four Star Sales, agent, consigned the colt, who is out of Abuntia, by Olmodavor. He is from the family of champion Susan's Girl, multiple Grade 1 winner Copelan and multiple Grade 2 winner St. Joe Bay.

Spanish Star, a 6-year-old daughter of Blame who is a half-sister to Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston and is in foal to Arrogate, brought the day's second-highest price of $275,000 from Crestwood Farm, agent. Consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent, she is out of Grade 3 winner La Gran Bailadora and from the family of Canadian champion Woolloomooloo.

West Bloodstock, agent for Repole Stables, paid $270,000 for Bambalina, a 4-year-old daughter of Bernardini and champion Perfect Sting. She is carrying her first foal by Street Sense. Consigned by Hidden Brook, agent, Bambalina is a half-sister to Grade 3 winner Smart Sting.

The session's leading consignor was Lane's End, agent, which sold 35 horses for $2,113,000.

After Delays and Discord, Turf Paradise Approved For Meet

Turf Paradise got unanimous 3-0 approval from the Arizona Racing Commission on Thursday to open its backstretch by the end of the month in anticipation of an 84-date, Jan. 4-May 1 racing season.

The meet will mark the first Thoroughbred racing in Arizona since Mar. 14, when Turf Paradise ended its spring season prematurely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In August, Turf Paradise withdrew its dates request for a traditional 2020-21 autumn-to-spring meet, citing liability concerns related to COVID-19. In between, the Arizona Downs summer meet never ran because local health officials would not extend permission to reopen under pandemic conditions.

“On the 19th of this month the horsemen arrive to get their stalls ready. On the 25th, which is the day before Thanksgiving, the horses are scheduled to arrive,” said Turf Paradise general manager Vincent Francia, who added that he does not anticipate any horse population problems that would keep the track from sustaining a five-day (Monday-Friday) race week.

Leroy Gessmann, who serves as both the AZHBPA executive director and the National HBPA president, said that “[Wednesday] we toured the backside, and it was probably the best condition I’ve seen Turf Paradise since I’ve been here for 12 years. There is still work to be done, but it’s in the process. We’re all very excited about the meet and anxious to get started.”

The newfound spirit of cooperation between the AZHBPA and Turf Paradise stands in sharp contrast to the acrimony-tinged AZRC meeting Sept. 10, at which members of the state’s racing community railed at Turf Paradise and accused track management of allowing the property to fall into disrepair and not making an honest effort to conduct racing.

Report: 77 Percent Of New York Thoroughbreds From Indicted Trainers Were Positive For Clenbuterol After Arrests

At a press conference this week, New York State Gaming Commission equine medical director Dr. Scott Palmer revealed that the majority of New York-based Thoroughbreds with trainers under federal indictment tested positive for clenbuterol in the weeks after the March arrests that rocked the racing world.

Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds that were trained by anyone named in the March indictment of more than two dozen trainers, veterinarians, and drug distributors in an alleged doping scheme were put on the veterinarian's list for 60 days and had biological samples taken for testing. Palmer said this week that the horses were tested at least twice during this period. Of nearly 100 Thoroughbreds based in the New York at the time, Palmer said 77 had levels of clenbuterol in their blood.

Though Palmer is still compiling veterinary records for some of those horses, so far he says none of those records show administration of clenbuterol. That leads him to suspect the drug was not being given as part of a legitimate treatment for a diagnosed condition, but rather for its side effects, which mimic anabolic steroids with repeated usage.

Palmer called the discovery “concrete evidence that clenbuterol was being widely abused in the Thoroughbred horses,” according to the Thoroughbred Daily News.

This isn't the first time testing has revealed widespread clenbuterol usage by the indicted trainers. In September, Kentucky Horse Racing Commission equine medical director Dr. Bruce Howard revealed that similar testing on Kentucky-based horses resulted in “a near 100 percent rate” of clenbuterol administration based on hair testing. Howard said that separately, treatment sheets submitted to the Kentucky commission as part of its veterinary disclosure rules have shown incidents of veterinarians prescribing the drug to entire barns.

Palmer said Mid-Atlantic states will likely tighten restrictions around clenbuterol administration.

Clenbuterol was one of several substances described in federal court documents as being favored by defendants for its performance-enhancing effects. Most of the other drugs listed there, such as EPO-like substances and “pain blockers,” are not permitted in active racehorses at all.

Friday The 13th Luck On The Line In Special Stronach 5

Bettors will have an opportunity to get lucky on a special Friday the 13th edition of the Stronach 5 with races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park West and Golden Gate Fields.

Beginning at approximately 3:24 p.m. EST, the Stronach 5 will once again feature an industry-low 12-percent takeout.

Laurel will kick off the Stronach 5 with three consecutive racing starting in Race 7, a waiver maiden claimer for 2-year-olds sprinting seven furlongs that attracted a field of 12 juveniles led by 9-5 program favorite Hello Hot Rod from the red-hot barn of trainer Brittany Russell.

The sequence continues in Race 8, a starter optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs where Nomo Ron, a last out winner at the track and distance, is the 5-2 top choice in a field of nine, and Laurel's Race 9 finale, a maiden claiming event for 3-year-olds and up at about 1 1/16 miles.

Action moves to Gulfstream Park West's Race 9 finale for Leg D, a one-mile claiming event for fillies and mares 3 and up scheduled for the grass featuring 2-1 turf favorite Hoponthebusgus, a seven-time career winner of nearly $260,000 in purses, and Free to Fly, the top choice should the race be moved to the main track.

Wrapping up the Stronach 5 is Race 3 from Golden Gate, a maiden claimer for fillies and mares 3 and up sprinting five furlongs over the all-weather surface. Barbara DeLima homebred Irenie, second in her previous start, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.
