Auction Of Marylou Whitney Gowns, Accessories To Benefit Saratoga Backstretch Workers

The legacy of Marylou Whitney, known to many as the “Queen of Saratoga,” continues on. The Albany Times-Union reported this week that an upcoming auction of 1,500 of Whitney's gowns, hats, and other accessories, as well as her Jaguar sedan, will be held to benefit the backstretch workers at Saratoga.

A date has not been announced for the auction, but a preview of included items will be available beginning Wednesday at www.marylouwhitneycollection.com.

Whitney's husband, John Hendrickson, said proceeds from a Sotheby's sale of her designer jewelry and paintings by Sir Alfred Munnings last year were used to pay estate taxes. This sale will benefit a cause that was long near and dear to her heart. Hendrickson is hopeful the auction will raise enough money to aid in the construction of a permanent structure on the Saratoga backstretch to house the backstretch workers' health clinic. Currently, the clinic is stationed in a trailer.

Whitney died last July at the age of 93.

There was a shock in store in the G2 King Edward VII S., as the 18-1 shot Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) provided Willie Muir and Martin Dwyer with a red-letter day. Settled with one behind early as the pace proved honest, the June 3 G3 Sandown Classic Trial runner-up loomed on the front end travelling strongly approaching two out and saw off Arthur’s Kingdom (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by two lengths, with the same margin back to Mohican Heights (Ire) (Australia {GB}) in third.

Sir Prancealot Due Back To Australia For Southern Hemisphere Season

Fast-rising international sire Sir Prancealot will ship to Cornerstone Stud in Australia for the 2020 Southern Hemisphere breeding season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of AUS$9,900 (US$6,858).

The 10-year-old son of Tamayuz entered stud in Ireland in 2013, and shuttled to Australia for the first time in the summer of 2017, making his first Southern Hemisphere-born foals 2-year-olds of 2020. He stood the Northern Hemisphere season in the U.S. for the first time in 2020, residing at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif., for an advertised fee of $15,000.

Though this was his first season in the U.S., Sir Prancealot's Irish-born runners created the demand for him to stand domestically prior to his arrival with their high-level stateside performance. His top U.S. runners include Grade 1 winner Lady Prancealot, and Grade 2 winners Beau Recall and Madam Dancealot.

Sir Prancealot's first Australian-born foals sold into stables including Gai Waterhouse, Tony McEvoy, Lindsey Smith and Gordon Richards.

Sir Prancealot is out of the French stakes-winning Catrail mare Mona Em, whose foals also includes stakes winner Nice Applause.

Royal Ascot Day One: Circus Maximus Takes Queen Anne Thriller

The 2020 Royal Ascot meeting kicked off on Tuesday afternoon, run without spectators due to the ongoing effects of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore captured the first Group 1 of the five-day meeting in a thriller when Circus Maximus edged the John Gosden-trained Terebellum at the line to win the Queen Anne Stakes.

It looked as if Frankie Dettori would once again be centre stage at Royal Ascot as he coaxed Terebellum to the front around a furlong and a half out. However, Circus Maximus's stamina edge came into play 50 yards out as he dived past the Godolphin filly to win by a nose.

The Queen Anne was Moore's 59th win at Royal Ascot, and the second for the 4-year-old son of Galileo, who won the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes last June. The win also gave O'Brien his 150th Group 1 victory in the U.K.
