Derby Week Stakes Races Taking Shape At Churchill Downs

Seventeen stakes races cumulatively worth purses of $9.78 million are on tap for Kentucky Derby Week at Churchill Downs, which runs Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Saturday, Sept. 5. The spectacular week of racing, headlined by the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) on Sept. 5 and $1.25 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (GI) on Sept. 4, will feature 14 graded stakes events.

Here's a look at some of the known early probable entrants, according to assistant racing secretary and stakes coordinator Dan Bork:

$115,000 Champion's Day Marathon Overnight Stakes presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (Entries taken Friday, race Tuesday, Sept. 1) – Probable: Eskenforit (trainer Steve Margolis).

$150,000 Unbridled Sidney (Entries taken Saturday, race Wednesday, Sept. 2) – Bye Bye J (Steve Asmussen); Change of Control (Michelle Lovell); Dixieincandyland (Eddie Kenneally); Stonewood (Carlo Vaccarezza); Tomlin (Mike Stidham); and Violent Times (Ralph Nicks).

Stakes Winner Sonic Mule Sold To Stand In Uruguay

Multiple stakes winner Sonic Mule (Distorted Humor), has been sold to stand the 2020 breeding season at Haras El Santo in Uruguay.

A stakes winner at two and three, trained by Todd Pletcher for Calumet Farm, he won five races including the listed Mucho Macho Man Stakes and the Buffalo Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

He also placed second in the Armed Forces Stakes, and he finished third in the Grade 2 Swale Stakes, G2 Saratoga Special Stakes, and G3 Mr. Prospector Stakes, among others. He earned $264,190 over three seasons of racing.

He is one of the three foals produced by the mare Globe Trot (A.P. Indy) and he is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner and millionaire Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) and current multiple graded stakes winner Global Campaign (Curlin).

How to Bet on the Kentucky Derby from Home

It’s been a tough year for sports. Even now that the NBA, NHL, and MLB have returned, the games haven’t been quite as exciting (understandably) as in normal years. Let’s say you’re in one of the few states that allows betting on sports. You might be inclined to put a few bucks down on the Los Angeles Lakers or the Boston Bruins — just to spice things up. Museum of Racing Reopens Sept. 5

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame will reopen to the public Sept. 5 at 9 a.m. The museum has been closed since January for the installation of a new state-of-the-art Hall of Fame experience, as well as multiple new and updated exhibitions.

The new signature film, What It Takes: Journey to the Hall of Fame, will initially be shown at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. daily. Narrated by sports broadcaster Bob Costas, the 16-minute film features original footage shot in 8K resolution from various racetracks and Thoroughbred farms throughout the country.

“We’re very excited to be open to the public and have the opportunity to share with everyone all the incredible projects that we’ve been working on,” said John Hendrickson, the Museum’s president. “We set out with an ambitious goal of being the best and most interactive hall of fame in the country. I believe we have accomplished that goal. Our great sport deserves a showcase venue that everyone can be proud of. This is a game-changer for the museum and it is everything we hoped it would be when we began the process to reimagine and enliven our institution. The museum is now an essential destination that can’t be missed.”

A number of enhanced safety protocols have been put in place at the museum in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and it is a Saratoga Cares Stay Safe Pledge institution with a commitment to the health of Saratoga County residents, workers, and visitors. Per New York State health policies, the museum will open with a maximum of 24 visitors admitted every two hours. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets online at www.racingmuseum.org beginning Aug. 31.
