Authentic Ascends To The Lead In NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll

At every point of call in the 146th edition of the Kentucky Derby, Authentic found himself in front of his sophomore rivals. When the votes were tallied in the latest National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Top Three-Year-Old Poll, the son of Into Mischief was again the one who could not be caught as he takes over sole position of the No. 1 spot from longtime leader Tiz the Law.

Authentic, who last held the top spot in the poll on March 23, captured the September 5 Kentucky Derby in frontrunning style, besting heavily favored Tiz the Law by 1 ¼-lengths. The victory not only provided Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert his record-tying sixth triumph in the 10-furlong classic, it earned Authentic 21 first-place votes and 354 total points as he improved his overall mark to five wins from six career starts.

Owned by Spendthrift Farm, My Racehorse, Madaket Stables, and Starlight Racing, Authentic previously annexed the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes on July 18 for his first top-level triumph. He and stablemate Thousand Words, who was a late scratch in the Kentucky Derby after rearing and falling the paddock, are both expected to contest the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on October 3.

“If they're working well and all going well, they'll go to the Preakness,” Baffert said from Churchill Downs on Sunday. “We're planning on both if they're doing well.”

The Kentucky Derby marked the first loss for Tiz the Law since last November but the Grade 1 Belmont and Travers Stakes winner didn't lose much regard among pundits. The son of Constitution still earned 16 first-place votes and 349 points this week as he dropped one spot to second.

Blue Grass Stakes winner Art Collector, who had to miss the Kentucky Derby due to a minor foot injury, ranks third with 259 points, just ahead of Honor A. P. (258 points), who finished fourth in the “Run for the Roses.”

Kentucky Oaks runner-up Swiss Skydiver (134 points) ranks fifth followed by Thousand Words (131), and Oaks heroine Shedaresthedevil, who joins the top 10 in the seventh spot with 90 points.

Max Player, fifth in the Kentucky Derby, sits eighth with 85 points as King Guillermo (79 points), and beaten Oaks favorite Gamine (72) complete the top 10.

With Authentic taking over the top spot in the sophomore ranks, Baffert now trains the No. 1 ranked horses on both weekly polls as champion Maximum Security continues to hold down first place in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll.

The 4-year-old son of New Year's Day earned 26 first-place votes and 340 points to maintain the lead position in the wake of his most recent triumph in the August 22 Grade 1 Pacific Classic Stakes.

Multiple Grade 1 winner Vekoma remains in second with 8 first-place votes and 260 points followed by Tom's d'Etat (3 first-place votes, 232 points) and fellow Grade 1 winner Improbable (198 points).

Champion Monomoy Girl moves up to fifth with 197 points after capturing the Grade 1 La Troienne Stakes on September 4, her third victory in as many starts this season. By My Standards, who won the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes on the Oaks undercard, advances four positions to sixth with 150 points followed by champion Midnight Bisou (146 points) and Tiz the Law (128). Authentic joins the Top Thoroughbred Poll for the first time in ninth with 111 points as multiple Grade 1 winner Rushing Fall (78 points) rounds out the top 10.

The NTRA Top Thoroughbred polls are the sport's most comprehensive surveys of experts. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. All horses that have raced in the U.S., are in training in the U.S., or are known to be pointing to a major event in the U.S. are eligible for the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll. Voting in both the Top Three-Year-Old Poll and the Top Thoroughbred Poll is scheduled to be conducted through the conclusion of the Breeders' Cup in November.

Miss Amulet Purchased by Coolmore

Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}), who won the G2 Sky Bet Lowther S. last out, has been privately purchased by Michael Tabor and fellow Coolmore partners, Racing Post reported on Tuesday. Previously owned by Colm Griffin, the grey also gained black-type with a win in the Listed Arqana Irish EBF Marwell S. earlier this season. Trained by Ken Condon, Miss Amulet is targetting the G1 Cheveley Park S. at Newmarket on Sept. 26.

“I can confirm that Miss Amulet has been sold outright to Michael Tabor and partners for an undisclosed figure,” Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland, told Racing Post. “She remains in training with Ken Condon and the plan is to run her in the G1 Cheveley Park S.”

Bred by Ringfort Stud in Ireland and sold for €1,000 as a Goffs November foal, Miss Amulet was selected by Donohoe as a yearling for 7,143gns at the Tattersalls September Yearling Sale. Out of Shena’s Dream (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), Miss Amulet’s extended family includes French highweight and GI Arlington Million hero Mill Native (Exclusive Native), MGSW and G1 French 2000 Guineas runner-up French Stress (Sham), French Group 3 winner Sporades (Vaguely Noble {Ire}) and GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. victor Willyconker (Ire) (Pyrus).

Added Condon, “She’s had a very good season and the plan remains the Cheveley Park, which we’re all looking forward to. Hopefully she’s as lucky for her new owners as she has been for her previous owner, who I know thought long and hard about selling her. He’s had a great journey with her and he wishes the new owners luck.”

Anothertwistafate Returns From Layoff In Thursday’s Longacres Mile

Ten older horses led by Peter Redekop's Anothertwistafate have been entered in the $100,000 Longacres Mile (G3), to be run Thursday, Sept. 10, at Emerald Downs.

The 85th renewal of the Northwest's premier event goes as Race 8 at 8:30 p.m.

Unraced since a 10th in the 2019 Preakness, Anothertwistafate is the 8 to 5 morning line favorite in the Longacres Mile. A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred by Scat Daddy, Anothertwistafate was among the nation's top 3-year-olds last year, finishing second in both the Sunland Derby (G3) and Lexington Stakes (G3) and winning the $100,000 El Camino Real Derby by seven lengths. Trained by Blaine Wright, Anothertwistafate is 3-2-0 in seven lifetime starts with $303,505 in earnings. The dark bay colt capped a strong series of works with a bullet six furlongs in 1:12 2/5 last Sunday at Golden Gate.

“Everything has gone well, our horse has worked lights out,” Wright said via phone from California. “His six furlong works are like a mile, he gallops out strongly.”

Wright has been the leading stakes trainer the last three seasons at Emerald Downs, amassing 30 stakes wins here since 2017. The Mile, however, has eluded his grasp. There have been some close calls, including runner-up finishes by Alert Bay in 2018 and Anyportinastorm, who missed by a head to Law Abidin Citizen in 2019.

Wright says winning the Longacres Mile is a big deal for anyone in Northwest racing.

“I think everyone involved in this race would say the same thing, that winning the Mile means a lot,” Wright said. “It means a lot to me, Mr. Redekop, and everyone in the race.”

Wright is adept at returning horses from layoffs, winning with 19 of 69 horses that have been sidelined 180 days or more. In 2018, Wright brought millionaire Alert Bay back from a 13-month break to finish second in the Longacres Mile.

Anothertwistafate drew the No. 4 post-position and will be ridden by two-time Longacres Mile-winning jockey Juan Gutierrez.

Five Star General and He's the Reason, both from Canada, are 9 to 2 and 5 to 1 on the morning line. Five Star General captured the 2019 British Columbia Derby and is two for two at a mile, while He's the Reason is a multiple stakes winner in Vancouver. Both are owned and trained by Glen Todd, whose Princess of Cairo stunned previously unbeaten Daffodil Sweet in the Washington Oaks earlier this week.

Five Star General, co starting high-weight with He's the Reason at 122 lbs., is ridden by two-time Kentucky Derby winner Mario Gutierrez, two for two in the Mile with wins on Taylor Said in 2012 and Point Piper in 2016.

Elliott Bay at 8 to 1 appears the top local threat. The lone returnee from the 2019 Longacres Mile, the 5-year-old Harbor the Gold gelding is unbeaten in two starts at the meet and also boasts the track's hottest connections. Eddie Martinez leads all jockeys with four stakes wins in 2020 while trainer Frank Lucarelli and owners Chad Christensen and Josh McKee have combined for four stakes wins at the meet: two by 2-year-old filly sensation Time for Gold and one each by Elliott Bay and Gold Crusher, the latter taking the $40,000 Muckleshoot Derby earlier this week.

Papa's Golden Boy and Take Charge Deputy, second and third to Elliott Bay in the Mt. Rainier, are 10 to 1 and 12 to 1. For sheer speed, Papa's Golden Boy is the fastest horse at Emerald Downs. His quarter and half-mile fractions in three races this year are otherworldly: :21 1/5 & 44 1/5 , :21 1/5 & :43 1/5, :21 3/5 & :43. The question, of course, is distance. Thursday will be his first try around two turns, but it was encouraging that younger brother Gold Crusher easily won the Muckleshoot Derby at a mile and sixteenth. In two starts this year, Take Charge Deputy defeated Barkley in an allowance at 5 1/2 furlongs and finished third in the Mt. Rainier at 6 1/2 furlongs. A 5-year-old gelding, Take Charge Deputy is three for six at the distance including a victory in the final edition of the Portland Meadows Mile.

Makah Lane, La Waun, The Press and Hollywood Heat all figure to go off at big odds.

Makah Lane won the one-mile Washington Cup Sophomore as a 3-year-old and began this year with a sharp allowance win opening day, but failed to fire while finishing fifth in the Mt. Rainier. La Waun is a a hard-hitting 5-year-old with 10 wins from 36 starts, but The Mile represents a big step up in class and his lone route win was vs. $12,500 claimers on a synthetic surface.

The Press is sharp and can get the distance; he beat Mach One Rules at a mile in the 2016 Washington Cup. He also is stepping up in class, but trainer Howard Belvoir has won the Longacres Mile three times at Emerald Downs. Hollywood Heat produced a $105.60 upset in allowance company last month, but was drilled by Elliott Bay on July 2 and has never raced farther than six furlongs.

Ghaiyyath Still in Irish Champion Lineup

MG1SW Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is one of 13 horses standing their ground at this entry stage for the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown on Saturday, Horse Racing Ireland announced on Tuesday. A final call on the Godolphin representative’s participation will be made on Wednesday. The bay has already racked up a trio of Group 1s this season-the Coronation Cup S. at Newmarket, Sandown’s Coral-Eclipse S. and last month’s Juddmonte International S. at York.

“Ghaiyyath will work tomorrow morning, we will have a final discussion then and if everyone is happy our intention is to fly to Dublin on Saturday morning,” said trainer Charlie Appleby.

He faces some stiff opposition, including Juddmonte International second and third MG1SW Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and G1 Prince Of Wales’s S. hero Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), from the yards of Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden, respectively. French Classic hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), who took the June 14 G1 Prix Gayan is also entered for Jean-Claude Rouget, while Godolphin’s MG1SW Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) could also compete.

O’Brien also has G1 Investec Derby victor Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MG1SW Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), G1SW Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G1SP Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and MGSW & MG1SP Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) entered at this point. Jessica Harrington has entered GSW Leo De Fury (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Joseph O’Brien has the pair of MGSW Buckhurst (Ire) (Australia {GB} and Group 3 winner Degraves (Ire) (Camelot {GB}).
