Wesley Ward One-Two in Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint

Outadore (Outwork) provided his freshman sire (by Uncle Mo) his second black-type winner in the space of eight days, working home best of all to take the Juvenile Sprint S. over a rain-affected Kentucky Downs turf course.

Beaten for speed, Outadore settled in the second flight of horses as County Final (Oxbow) dueled on the lead inside of Bodenheimer (Atta Boy Roy) through the middle furlongs. Poised three deep as the field entered the straight, Outadore was roused to the lead leaving the eighth pole and held sway at stablemate Fauci (Malibu Moon) took a failed run at him late. Cowan (Kantharos) was just up to touch County Final out of third.

“I think both will go a little farther, which is nice as well,” said trainer Wesley Ward, who saddled the first two home. “I think they’ll both go a mile on the grass no problem. So we’ll probably split them up in their next start, one to the [GII] Bourbon [S. at Keeneland Oct. 4], one to the [GII] Pilgrim at Belmont [Oct. 3]. We’re going to talk it over with both owners and make a plan. The way it looks, Irad [Ortiz Jr.] said he was wanting more ground and was kind of waiting. First thing Tyler [Gaffalione] aboard Fauci] said was, ‘Wesley, please, run him farther.’ So we’re really excited about both colts.”

A May foal, Outadore was making his stakes debut off a visually impressive, 2 3/4-length debut victory going 5 1/2 furlongs over the Saratoga turf course July 26.

Outadore was the most expensive of 28 of his sire’s first-crop weanlings reported as sold in 2018, hammering for $140,000 at Keeneland November, and made for a nice return on investment when fetching $290,000 (3/66) at Keeneland September last year. Outwork is one of three freshman sons of Uncle Mo (Laoban, Nyquist) to be represented by black-type winners to date and joins the latter as the only first-crop stallions to have multiple stakes winners. Outwork’s daughter Samborella won the Seeking the Ante S. at Saratoga Sept. 4, but was sadly euthanized after suffering an injury nearing the wire. Outadore’s dam was most recently bred to Uncle Mo. Golden Gate Fields Cancels Again Saturday Due to Smoke

For the second day in a row, Golden Gate Fields in Northern California cancelled live racing Saturday due to smoke in the area. Recent wildfires in California and Oregon have been well documented in the news, and the Bay Area, where Golden Gate Fields is located, has been one of the hardest hit locales. Air quality has been deemed unsafe for both horses and humans.

After cancelling both Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 due to the conditions, Golden Gate’s next day of live racing is scheduled to be Sunday.

Preliminary Proof: Drones An Inexpensive, Safer Alternative For Herding Feral Horses

Feral horses that roam over extensive areas of land can be difficult to corral when necessary for management purposes, like for contraceptive treatment. Pushing the animals into a corral with a helicopter is a common way to contain them, but this method is stressful and potentially harmful to the horses; it's also expensive.

Drs. Sue McDonnell and Catherine Torcivia of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine New Bolton Center investigated if free-roaming horses would follow a drone into a corral. They based their hypothesis on the concept that a horse's natural instinct is to become alert to novel objects and intruders, and to respond as a herd to level of arousal elicited.

To test their theory, the duo used a consumer-grade drone and the university's herd of 123 semi-feral ponies. They discovered that the drone was able to lead the horses into corrals on the first attempt and again on seven of nine additional attempts over the next month.

The drone led the horses to the same and different destinations. The horses tended to follow at a fast walk, with some slow trotting intervals interspersed. In each case, a stallion or multiple stallions first alerted the herd to the drone. The males then vocalized their concern and initiated the herd's following of the drone's retreat.

The scientists found that the drone was most effective when flying between 6 and 20 feet above the ground and leading the herd at a distance of about 30 feet. Next, the duo will test the drone on a herd of feral horses in a larger enclosure. If successful, they will conclude that drone use may provide a lower-cost, lower-stress, repeatable option for capturing feral horses, and improve both human and equine safety.

Breeze Next Weekend Will Help Determine Tiz The Law’s Preakness Status

Four-time Grade 1 winner Tiz the Law has settled back in at trainer Barclay Tagg's Belmont Park-based stable in Elmont, N.Y., after a hard-fought second as the favorite in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on September 5 at Churchill Downs.

Owned by Sackatoga Stable, Tiz the Law arrived at the “Run for the Roses” off an unbeaten 3-year-old season that included victories in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 30 at Gulfstream Park, the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on June 20 and the Grade 1 Runhappy Travers on August 8 at Saratoga Race Course. Last season, he gave Sackatoga Stable their first Grade 1 triumph since Funny Cide [2004 Jockey Club Gold Cup] when winning the Champagne in only his second start.

Jack Knowlton, Sackatoga Stable's operating manager, said the Grade 1, $1 million Preakness Stakes on October 3 at Pimlico Race Course, the final leg of this year's Triple Crown, is still an option for the talented son of second crop sire Constitution with a work next week being a deciding factor.

“He'll be doing his regular gallops and as long as everything continues along well, then we'll have a work next weekend to assess where we are,” said Knowlton. “We want to make sure he comes out of the race well and acts like he did after the Travers. That's what we'd like to see moving forward.”

Bred in New York by Twin Creeks Farm, Tiz the Law is out of the Tiznow mare Tizfiz, boasting six victories from eight lifetime starts and earnings of $2.61 million

Following last Saturday's Kentucky Derby, Knowlton purchased a New York-bred yearling on behalf of Sackatoga Stable at the Fasig-Tipton Sale for $300,000. Bred in the Empire State by Barry Ostrager, the yearling son of Tiznow is out of the stakes-placed Gilded Time mare Eternal Grace, who produced multiple turf graded stakes placed Bye Bye Bernie. He was consigned by Hunter Valley Farm.

“We got a nice Tiznow colt that we really like a lot,” Knowlton said. “There were only a couple horses we bid on, but we persevered and got him. He's down in Ocala now and hopefully Tony Everard [of New Episode Training] can work his magic. If he can run in New York stakes races, that's our hope. It's not always easy getting those.”
