Likely Favorite Love Withdrawn From Arc De Triomphe, To Target Breeders’ Cup Turf

With very soft going predicted for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, Oct. 4, trainer Aidan O'Brien has withdrawn the likely favorite Love from consideration, reports Sky Sports Racing. The dual classic winner will now be aimed at the Breeders' Cup Turf at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

“Sadly I don't think there's any prospect of the ground improving much,” O'Brien told skysports.com. “So we'll give her a little time now and give her a nice run in the Breeders' Cup. The plan is to have her in training next year, so that's something to look forward to.”

The 3-year-old daughter of Galileo, a Coolmore homebred, has won a trio of Group 1 races this year: the 1,000 Guineas, Investec Oaks, and Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

Oisin Murphy Could Face Long Ban After Positive Drug Test, Vows To Clear His Name

Top European jockey Oisin Murphy could face a long suspension after a urine test taken from the rider in France this summer was found to contain cocaine metabolites. Murphy said France Galop has indicated the positive came from the authority's A test and that its B test (split sample) results have not yet been released to him.

Murphy has subsequently had hair tests done which have not found the presence of cocaine, and he maintains he has not taken the drug.

Hair tests are primarily used to look for the presence of substances over a longer period of time than blood or urine tests and are not generally thought of as any more sensitive than blood or urine tests.

Previously, riders testing positive for cocaine by the authority have faced bans of six months.

Murphy released the following statement about the situation via his Twitter profile on Oct. 1:

On July 19, 2020 Oisin Murphy was selected for urine testing at Chantilly racecourse. On Aug. 19 he was informed by France Galop that his “A” sample had returned positive for metabolites of cocaine.

On the same day, Oisin organized for an independent laboratory to undertake hair sampling to prove his innocence. The hair sample was taken on Aug. 22 with the collection process filmed by the laboratory for authenticity.

The laboratory analyzed multiple 0.3 cm segments of Oisin's hair and on Aug. 26 the results of the hair test returned completely negative for metabolites of cocaine, which was entirely expected as Oisin has never taken cocaine. These results have been shared with France Galop and he awaits the results of France Galop's analysis of his “B” sample.

Oisin Murphy said: 'I have never taken cocaine in my life and will fight to clear my name. I want to thank those who are supporting me and in the meantime I want to keep riding winners and focus on my career. I will have no further comment to make and wish to respect the process of France Galop.'”

As part of the Racing League, 12 teams consisting of two to four trainers, three jockeys and 30 horses will compete in 36 races across the six meetings and accrue points for their finishing positions. Each race in the league will be worth £50,000. The team that has gained the most points at the end of the competition will win the league. The meetings for the Racing League will be at Newcastle on July 29, Doncaster on Aug. 5, Lingfield on Aug. 12, Royal Windsor on Aug. 19, Lingfield on Aug. 26 and Newcastle on Sept. 2.

Among those supporting the concept was jockey Martin Dwyer, who said, “The Racing League has done a great job securing fixtures at Doncaster, Lingfield Park, Newcastle and Royal Windsor. The team element of the competition really excites me and I can’t wait to be part of it.”

Trainer Brian Meehan said, “At a time of extraordinary uncertainty in the sporting world, it’s fantastic news for British horse racing that the Racing League is able to unveil the dates and venues for 2021. The prize money alone is great news for owners, and I’m looking forward to competing in the Racing League and hopefully being part of the winning team.”
