George Baker Opening a New Yard in Bahrain

Trainer George Baker is opening a satellite yard in Bahrain. Baker, whose horses have won on both the Flat and over jumps, has saddled winners in France and St Moritz, as well. The second annual Bahrain International Trophy, hosted by the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club, is set for Nov. 20.

“We are hugely excited at the official announcement of a long-term partnership between the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club and George Baker Racing, which signals our long-term commitment to horse racing in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and we look forward to the establishment of a satellite yard in the coming months,” said Baker. “We have been very impressed with the commitment and vision of the REHC.

“The quality of the field for the upcoming Bahrain International Trophy is testament to the quality of the racing surface and the facilities on site, and we are excited to become a part of an ambitious and burgeoning horse racing jurisdiction.”

Echo Town Retired to Ashford

Grade I winner Echo Town (Speightstown–Letgomyecho, by Menifee) has been retired from racing and will stand for a fee of $10,000 at Coolmore’s Ashford Stud.

“We are delighted that Echo Town will be coming to Ashford,” said Ashford’s Director of Sales Charlie O’Connor. “He’s a very good-looking horse and Speightstown is making an impression as a sire of sires. As one of the best sprinters of his generation we think Echo Town offers a similar profile to our own Munnings who continues to go from strength to strength.”

Echo Town broke his maiden first out at Fair Grounds for Steve Asmussen, earning ‘TDN Rising Star’ status in the process. Two more convincing wins followed at Oaklawn Park and Churchill Downs before he was second in the GI Woody Stephens S. at Belmont. Next time out in the GI H. Allen Jerkens S. at Saratoga, he turned the tables on Woody Stephens victor No Parole (Violence) with a convincing 3 1/2-length score (video).

“We are extremely excited for Echo Town to stand at Coolmore America,” said co-owner Michael Levinson of L&N Racing. “He has been a star on the racetrack, and we’re confident Coolmore will give him every opportunity to succeed as a stallion. We look forward to seeing his foals hit the ground in 2022.”

A son of GII Forward Gal S. winner Letgomyecho, Echo Town is a half-brother to GSW J Boys Echo (Mineshaft) and GSP placed Unbridled Outlaw (Unbridled’s Song).

Echo Town is already at Ashford and available for inspection by appointment.

Bahrain Likely Swan Song For Deirdre

MG1SW Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) will make what is likely her final start in the £500,000 Bahrain International Trophy on Friday, Nov. 20. The 2019 G1 Nassau S. heroine is the first Japanese horse to campaign in Bahrain. The Toji Morita-owned bay was eighth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 4. Post positions will be drawn for the 14-horse field on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

“Her two Group 1 wins came on right-handed tracks at Kyoto and Goodwood,” said assistant trainer Yoshi Hashida to the Bahrain notes team. “The long straight at Sakhir will suit her. The track looks very fair and we like the firm ground that we will get. We are very excited to take part in the race.

“We’ve seen that Hollie Doyle is one of the best jockeys in Britain this season. Deirdre is now six and she is a very clever horse, we need something fresh to energise her and that is why we feel that Hollie is an ideal jockey for her. We have found that when a female work rider rides her, that suits her better. Mitsuru has said that this will likely be Deirdre’s last race. We are emotional that this journey is almost over.

“We are very excited to be the first Japanese runner in Bahrain. We hope this will be a good start of a good relationship between the two countries. “

BC Winner Tarnawa to Return at Five

The G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is the long-term goal for His Highness The Aga Khan’s Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal). The GI Breeders’ Cup Turf heroine was undefeated in four starts as a 4-year-old, and, in a rare move, will remain in training at five. She opened her season with a win in the G3 Give Thanks S. at Cork in August, before taking the G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille in September and the G1 Prix de l’Opera on Arc Day last month. She made a stunning late run to win the Turf by a length over now two-time runner-up Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) on Nov. 7.

“The plan is for Tarnawa to stay in training next year, which is good news,” Weld told the Irish Times. “We will look forward to training her for [an] autumn campaign again, which will hopefully include the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She has improved each year, from two to three to four and it’s quite possible she could improve even a little bit more. She is very versatile in terms of ground and is an exceptionally talented filly.”
