Wootton Bassett Session-Topper To USA

Foals were to the fore during the second session of the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale and Blandford Bloodstock made the early running when bidding €160,000 for a filly by the increasingly popular Wootton Bassett (GB).

The weanling (lot 251) hails from a George Strawbridge family which includes the Group 1-winning siblings Call The Wind (GB), We Are (Ire) and With You (GB), and is the first foal of the unraced Ayelet (GB) (Hat Trick {Jpn}). The mare’s listed-winning dam Dream Clover (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is a half-sister to the above-named trio. Ayelet was bought by Victor Langlais at the Tattersalls July Sale for 40,000gns and sent to the former Haras d’Etreham resident for her first cover with the resultant filly being consigned by La Motteraye.

“Tom Goff, my business partner, was looking for a filly foal for one of his clients,”  said Richard Brown, who was acting on behalf of an American breeder. “Tom had tried at Newmarket but wasn’t able to come over to Arqana. Then we saw this filly. She has been bought for an owner/breeder so it’s a long-term investment. She is by a super sire and from a really lovely family.”

A foal by the similarly popular Showcasing (GB) made his way onto the shopping list of Mags O’Toole and became the most expensive colt of the day at €150,000. Another first foal, lot 273 is out of the unraced Dadao (GB) (Intello {Ger}), a daughter of Anthony Oppenheimer’s G1 Coronation S. winner Balisada (GB) (Kris {GB}) and thus a half-sister to G2 Jockey Club S.-placed Galactic Star (GB) (Galileo {Ire}).

With Arqana being mindful of the current curfew and lockdown restrictions which remain in place throughout France, the traditional National Hunt sector of this sale, which usually takes place on the final day, had been brought forward to the November sale and the remaining Flat mares and foals have been spread throughout the four days. That led to 70 fewer lots being catalogued for Sunday compared to last year, which naturally resulted in a downturn in turnover to €3,893,500 despite the clearance rate of 75%. The average was down by 16% to €29,056 and the median contracted to €24,000 from €26,000.

The well-related young Le Havre (Ire) mare No Faith (Fr) led the broodmare division and, in foal for the first time to Bated Breath (GB), lot 332 was bought by a partnership of Haras d’Etreham and Haras du Lieu Marmion for €112,000. The 5-year-old half-sister to GIII San Francisco Mile winner Tigah (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) raced for Prime Equestrian won three sprint races in the provinces for Christophe Ferland.

The Wertheimer draft remained popular, with the listed winner Sonjeu (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) being bought for €150,000 by Marc-Antoine Berghgracht. The 5-year-old (lot 434) daughter of Group 2 runner-up Wait And See (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), who is now on her way to Ireland, is carrying her first foal by the Wertheimer-bred young Haras du Quesnay stallion Attendu (Ire). The family also includes the Group 1-winning fillies Golden Opinion (Slew O’Gold) and Samitar (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire})

Another from the Wertheimer breeding operation to end up among the day’s leaders was the lightly-raced 3-year-old Angelissima (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), who was snapped up by SARL Trotting Bloodstock for €95,000. The family has been lucky very recently for purchaser Florent Fonteyne, who this year bought Thirsty (Ire), an Oasis Dream (GB) half-brother to the filly’s dam Foreign Tune (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). The 3-year-old, who is trained by Adrien Fouassier, broke his maiden at Deauville only last week by five lengths.

“It’s a family that I know well,” said Fonteyne of lot 300. “This family has been very lucky for us. She has been bought as a breeding prospect but she could run again beforehand, so she will head to Adrien Fouassier and he will tell us if she can run or not.”

The family has also been very successful for the filly’s breeder over the years and her dam’s other siblings include group winners Impassable (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), Spotify  (Fr) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) and Attendu (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Haras de le Gousserie’s great year on the track was headlined by the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere victory of Sealiway (Fr) and subsequent trip to Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup. Through Paul Nataf, the Chelhoub family added a youngster to the ranks by Sealiway’s sire Galiway (GB) in lot 385.

Out of the listed-placed Revedargent (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}), the filly foal is not only bred on the same cross of the two Haras de Colleville stallions as Sealiway, but also the G3 Prix la Rochette winner Kenway (Fr), who also carried the colours of Haras de la Gousserie colours.

“She has been bought as a future racing prospect,” said Nataf. “There has been Sealiway, Kenway, and we hope we have found the third.”

Secretariat Vos Populi Award To Kentucky Derby, BC Classic Winner Authentic

Authentic, wire-to-wire victor in both the 2020 Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup Classic, has been voted winner of the 2020 Secretariat Vox Populi Award, an online poll. Created by Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery, the award annually recognizes the horse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the general public and gained recognition for Thoroughbred racing.

A frontrunning favorite among the record number of fans who voted in the year-end online poll, Authentic burst onto the racing scene early in 2020. In the unusual calendar that followed for 3-year-olds, the speedy colt by Into Mischief returned five wins and two second-place finishes in his seven starts.

Authentic is owned in a partnership with B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm, Madaket Stables and Starlight Racing. In March, Spendthrift offered an interest in Authentic to My Racehorse Stable, a new venture that sells affordable micro-shares of racehorses to casual fans. Thus, when Authentic was victorious in this year's Run for the Roses, he fulfilled the Derby dreams of more than 5,300 racing enthusiasts with a vested interest in him.

“Offering racing fans the opportunity to share in the joy of horse ownership is an innovation that holds much promise for the industry and an idea that my mother would have applauded,” said Kate Chenery Tweedy, family historian and daughter of Penny Chenery. “These Authentic interests and the affection they share for their personal champion has parlayed into widespread attraction and support for the sport. Authentic's athleticism speaks for itself, but in a resounding and new way, Authentic has emerged as a horse of the people.”

Hughes, representing the ownership interests, expressed gratitude for the honor, given the talented field of nominees.

“We were so pleased with the ride that Authentic gave us this year,” Hughes said. “He carried with him the hopes and dreams of all of us who love horse racing, and he delivered time and again on racing's largest stages. We'll remember that thrill for a long time to come — one of the few good stories of 2020. And I, for one, am hopeful that this new kind of partnership will lead to more fans taking an active interest as owners in our magical sport.”

Authentic was retired to Spendthrift following the Breeders' Cup and will enter stud in 2021.

Trained by Bob Baffert and piloted by jockey John Velazquez in his final three starts, Authentic was one of a select group of five nominees submitted by the Vox Populi Committee and presented to thousands of voters in more than 50 countries who spoke as the “Voice of the People” in online polls on both Secretariat.com and AmericasBestRacing.net, where the Vox Populi was featured in the Fan Choice Awards. Other nominees were Monomoy Girl. Swiss Skydiver, Tiz the Law, and Whitmore. Voters also had the option to write in their own favorite candidate, where other exceptional horses were noted.

Authentic now joins a list of cherished racing stars who have also received the Vox Populi Award: Bricks and Mortar (2019), Winx (2018), Ben's Cat (2017), California Chrome (2016 and 2014), American Pharoah (2015), Mucho Macho Man (2013), Paynter (2012), Rapid Redux (2011), and Zenyatta (inaugural 2010).

‘Wizard’ Works His Magic in Champions Cup

Chuwa Wizard (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) posted a mild upset as the 12-1 fourth choice in the G1 Champions Cup at Chukyo on Sunday. The 1800-metre race was the second group win for the 5-year-old entire.

The Northern Farm-bred sat in between horses in midpack while Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) and Inti (Jpn) (Came Home) duked it out on the front end. The first 1000 metres was covered in 1:00.30. Gradually improving three deep on the bend, Chuwa Wizard was within striking distance in fifth at the quarter pole. However, he had more to give and inched up to Inti, passed that foe in deep stretch and burst away to win. Inti was relegated to third late by Gold Dream (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}), who was 2 1/2 lengths behind Chuwa Wizard. A neck separated second and third, with last year’s winner and heavy favourite Chrysoberyl (Jpn) (Gold Allure {Jpn}) only fourth another three-quarters of a length behind after stalking in third for much of the trip.

“The horse was in very good condition and felt really good,” said pilot Keita Tosaki. “With Chrysoberyl traveling in front, I was able to feel his response while marking the race favorite. As it takes time for him to accelerate, I urged him to go early and the horse responded with great strength.”

A winner at first asking in February of 2018, by the end of that season he signed off with a victory in the Listed Nagoya Grand Prix over 2500 metres that December from eight starts as a 3-year-old. At four in six starts, Chuwa Wizard took the Listed Diolite Kinen and G3 Heian S. in consecutive starts and was back in the winner’s circle two starts later in the Listed JBC Classic. He ran fourth in the 2019 edition of this race to Chrysoberyl to end his season on Dec. 1. The Listed Kawasaki Kinen went his way on Jan. 29, and he rolled a pair of threes going 2000 metres, both to Chrysoberyl, in the June 24 Listed Teio Sho in the slop and last out in the Nov. 3 Listed JBC Classic on Nov. 3. His next start is likely to be the $20-million 1800-metre Saudi Cup in February

Pedigree Notes
The 12th Group 1 winner and one of 80 black-type winners for his late sire, Chuwa Wizard is one of two winners from four to run out of the four-time winner Chuwa Blossom. Princess Noor Retired With Soft Tissue Injury

Dual Grade I winner Princess Noor (Not This Time–Sheza Smoke Show, by Wilko) has been retired from racing with a soft tissue injury after being pulled up as the heavy favorite in Saturday’s GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos, owner Zedan Racing Stables reported Sunday morning.

“She’s a star and a very talented filly,” said Amr Zedan. “She had the race and most probably a few more Grade Is to her name. Our focus now is to get her healthy and off to Kentucky to be the best mom she can ever be. It hurts, but thank God she’s well and retirement is the best decision.”

A $135,000 Keeneland September yearling who blossomed into this year’s OBS Spring 2-year-olds sale topper at $1.35 million after blazing through a :20 1/5 quarter-mile breeze, the dark bay debuted as an odds-on favorite Aug. 22 at Del Mar and cruised to the easiest of tallies, earning ‘TDN Rising Star’ status. Backing that up with a dominant 6 1/2-length conquest of the GI Del Mar Debutante S., she made it three-for-three with an 8 1/4-length romp in the GI Chandelier S.

Fifth as the favorite in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, Princess Noor was 3-5 to get back on track in the Starlet, but was pulled up by jockey Victor Espinoza shortly after taking the lead around the quarter pole. She retires with a record of 5-3-0-0 and earnings of $363,500.
