Familiar Names Close Remington Standings

Remington Park in Oklahoma City closed its 66-day season Tuesday with familiar names atop the final standings. Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen was the runaway leading trainer by both wins, with 76, and earnings, with $1,529,824. It marked his 16th leading training title at the Oklahoma track and his fifth in a row. David Cabrera won his third consecutive riding title at Remington, both by wins and earnings, with 96 victories and $2,033,449 in purses.

Danny Caldwell, an Oklahoma resident, secured his 11th owner title with 28 trips to the winner’s circle and $612,751 in earnings. Caldwell has won 371 races at Remington, making him the all-time winningest owner in the track’s history.

“I want to thank Remington Park for its hospitality and the six different trainers I’ve used to win all over the country this year and it doesn’t stop there,” said Caldwell, a former high school coach. “It’s a big team effort with everyone in the barn and I still use my coaching philosophy to recruit the talent [in claiming horses]. A lot goes into the formula.”

The Oklahoma oval also had a record handle of $101,313,352, exceeding $100 million for the first time in the track’s 32-year history.

Smooth Like Strait Headlines Mathis Brothers Mile

Cannon Thoroughbreds’ Smooth Like Strait (Midnight Lute) is the 8-5 morning-line favorite for the GII Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita Saturday. The Mike McCarthy trainee, first or second in five of six starts so far this year, won the Oct. 18 GII Twilight Derby and missed by just a head when second in the Nov. 28 GI Hollywood Derby last time out.

Three Diamond Farms’ Field Pass (Lemon Drop Kid), winner of the July 12 GIII Transylvania S. at Keeneland, was third in the Twilight Derby and returns to the turf following a win over the synthetic surface at Woodbine in the Nov. 21 GIII Ontario Derby.

Storm the Court (Court Vision), still looking for his first win since his 45-1 upset of last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, will be making his third turf appearance Saturday. The bay colt was second behind Smooth Like Strait in the Aug. 9 GIII La Jolla H. before running sixth in the GI Kentucky Derby. He returned to the lawn to be seventh in the Hollywood Derby last time out.

CT Scan Best Modality To ID Foreign Bodies In Equine Feet

Drs. Nadine Ogden, Peter Milner, John Stack and Alison Talbot from the University of Liverpool created a study that compared diagnostic modalities to determine which was the best for identifying foreign bodies in horses' feet. Even when an injury is obvious, it isn't always clear if any foreign material remains within the wound.

The research team buried two foreign bodies into cadaver equine legs: one at the sole and one at the coronary band. The materials included dry wood, soaked wood, glass, slate and plastic. They then asked three equine veterinarians to examine the images produced by computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and digital X-rays.

They determined that there was minimal variation between the vet's findings on all the images. CT was found to be the most useful imaging modality. CT was able to detect all materials; it was able to pick out slate, glass and dry wood better than the other imaging modalities.

The foreign bodies were able to be seen on MRI, but these images were not clear enough for the vets to determine what type of material it was. Plastic and wood were difficult to determine on digital X-rays.

The team notes that though it is not traditionally necessary to determine what material is involved, it is important to use an appropriate imaging technique to make sure the foreign body can be detected.
