Equuip And IIJ Will Offer Financial Course For Jockeys

Equuip and Irish Injured Jockeys have partnered to develop a financial literary course for all professional jockeys, including conditionals and apprentices, which is free to attend. It will offer practical advice and tools to help guide jockeys on all financial matters, how to make better money decisions, learn about personal finance, financial concepts, and financial planning.

The course is divided into three modules-an online tutorial, an in-person workshop with Gateway Financial Consultants, and one-on-one mentoring with Gateway Financial Consultants. All professional jockeys can register for the course on Equuip's website.

Carol Nolan, Director of People and Equuip at HRI, commented: “Equuip teamed up with Irish Injured Jockeys to offer this course to all professional jockeys as it was something we both felt was needed for the jockey population. Jockeys are licenced from 16 years of age, and it is important that they receive as much information in relation to their finances as possible. From basic financial advice to financial planning and investments, we hope it will offer really practical advice and support to the riders. In time, our plan is to roll out a similar course to all other employees within the racing and breeding industry.”

2023 Fixture List Released By HRI

The 2023 fixture list, featuring the same number of fixtures as 2022 with 390, was revealed by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) on Tuesday. Three of those fixtures will be floating fixtures, to be assigned as needed.

Next year, Navan racecourse (Nov. 18, 19) and Punchestown (Nov. 25, 26) will host high-class weekends of NH racing ahead of the traditional Winter Festival at Fairyhouse (Dec. 2, 3).  A new two-day fixture will be introduced at Naas on the weekend of Oct. 14 and 15 and a two-day all-Flat fixture at Leopardstown on the following weekend. The season will end at the Curragh on Sunday, Nov. 5, while the Flat Turf season also begins at the Curragh, on Saturday, Mar. 25. The number of blank Sundays will be retained at six, on Mar. 19, Apr. 23, June 25, July 16, July 30 and Oct. 8. The number of Saturdays with clashing afternoon Irish race meetings has been reduced to nine in 2023, from 15 in 2022.

Jason Morris, HRI's Director of Racing and Strategic Projects, said, “The 2023 fixture list sees a significant development of the National Hunt schedule in November with a series of two-day feature meetings now being created for both race programming and promotional benefits. The very popular Down Royal NH Festival at the start of the month will be followed by two-day meetings at Navan (featuring the Fortria and Troytown), Punchestown (featuring the Morgiana and the re-located John Durkan Memorial Chase from early December), leading into the hugely successful Fairyhouse Winter Festival in early December.”

Principles Of Animal Welfare In Ireland’s Horse Racing Industry Launched

A booklet, titled Principles of Animal Welfare in Ireland's Horse Racing Industry, was launched by Horse Racing Ireland on Friday. Created with input from people who work in a variety of roles in the horse racing and breeding industries in a co-design process, the booklet's objective was to put current best-practice science into language, principles and criteria which are real and coherent with four principles detailed as underpinning equine welfare in Ireland–Good Feeding, Good Housing, Good Health, and Good Well-being.

John Osborne, HRI's Director of Equine Welfare and Bloodstock, said, “We had robust discussions with a large and diverse group of industry participants which was very productive. Our core objective is to be in a position to verify that the standards of care for our horses are high and measurable.

“We should not take for granted what some might call the basics, but which are in essence the cornerstones of a good welfare profile for any horse. We have a responsibility to our horses, and everyone plays a part in delivering a good life to the centrepieces of our industry.”

The booklet is available in soft copy on the HRI's website and from HRI's Equine Welfare division, email Siobhan at sgriffin@hri.ie.
