HRI Announces Amended Programmes for Naas and Fairyhouse

Following the cancellation of Navan on Sunday, Dec. 18, due to frost, this meeting will not be rescheduled. The G2 Tote Navan Novice Hurdle will now be held at Naas next Tuesday, Dec. 20 as an eighth race with original declarations to stand. The NavanRacecourse.ie Rated Novice Steeplechase will now be held at Fairyhouse next Wednesday, Dec. 21 as an eighth race. It will revert back to entries at weights stage and will close for fresh declarations along with the rest of the Fairyhouse Meeting by 10am on Monday, Dec. 19.

As The Bective Stud Tea Rooms Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) was unable to be held at Navan Dec. 18, The Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) due to be held at Leopardstown on Wednesday, Dec. 28, will now have a value of €50,000 (up from €30,000).

Horse Racing Ireland Launches Guide

A health, safety and well-being guide for the horse breeding and racing sectors, meant as a resource for the industry covering legislation and detailing best practices was launched by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) on Thursday.

As the first step towards fostering improvements in health and safety standards in the industry, HRI commissioned Red C Research in Spring 2022 to conduct a survey of a cross section of members of the industry, both online and by interview, to canvas attitudes on the subject.

The survey results revealed:
• As many as 41% of respondents did not feel well informed on the subject of health and safety (the problem being most urgent in smaller yards)
• A culture of risk assessment is lacking in the industry, with only 41% confirming that they risk assess at least once a year, and many prepared to admit that they risk assess only in response to a problem emerging
• No more than 50% of respondents said that they have a current safety statement
• Only 44% of respondents provide their staff with training, and of those, 58% would provide only informal training, and many are only training new staff members (and many felt the quality of this is declining)
• There are no uniform standards of health and safety practice in the industry, with the most obvious divide being differences in practice between large and small yards

Carol Nolan, HRI's Director of People and equuip, said, “The results of the Red C Research survey was invaluable to help us create this guide for all of those who feel poorly informed about health and safety issues and don't know where to turn for information. We hope, as a first step, it will help everyone in the industry, especially trainers and breeders, understand all the legal and moral obligations required and provide practical tools and advice to help meet those obligations.”

Dubai Duty Free Extends Sponsorship Of Irish Derby, Returns To Sunday Slot

Dubai Duty Free will continue their sponsorship of the G1 Irish Derby, as they renewed their partnership with the Curragh, the duo announced on Tuesday. In addition, the prize-money for the Irish Classic will increase from€1 million to €1.25 million in 2023, and five additional races will be sponsored by the airport retailer. For the first time since 2011, the Irish Derby will take place on a Sunday, with 2023's date set to be July 2. The full eight-race card will also become a permanent part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Tote World Pool for the first time next year. The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Weekend will take place from June 30-July 2. An evening meeting will be conducted on Friday, and Saturday's Ladies Day will feature the G1 Alwasmiyah Pretty Polly S. and the Kildare Village Ladies Derby.

Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman & CEO, Colm McLoughlin said, “Our title sponsorship of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is in line with our global strategy of promoting both our own duty-free brand and the city of Dubai itself. We have successfully sponsored the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby for the past 15 years and we are happy to extend our sponsorship, with an increase in prize-money, and look forward to working with the Curragh to grow this event even further.”

Curragh CEO, Brian Kavanagh said, “We are delighted to announce this extension to the Derby sponsorship and the increase in prize-money for the Derby itself. We are also very pleased that Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Day has been selected as a Tote World Pool event and excited about the switch back to a Sunday which will allow the three-day Festival to build up to its feature race.”

McManus, Manning Honoured With Horse Racing Ireland Awards

Leading owner J.P. McManus and the recently retired jockey Kevin Manning were among those honoured Monday at the annual Horse Racing Ireland Awards.

McManus, who is a 19-time champion National Hunt owner in Ireland, received the Contribution to the Industry Award. He has been associated with many of the top jumps horses for over 40 years with more 4,000 winners, including Mister Donavan (Choral Society {GB}), Jack Of Trumps (Kings Theatre {Ire}) and Deep Gale (Deep Run {GB}). He is a six-time Champion Hurdle-winning owner, two-time Grand National winner with Don't Push It (Old Vic [GB}) and Minella Times (Oscar {Ire}), and the Cheltenham Gold Cup went his way with Synchronised (Sadler's Wells).

Manning, who concluded his 40 years in the saddle this fall, was bestowed the Irish Racing Hero Award. He was champion apprentice in 1984 and 1987 and he won 36 Group 1 winners over his remarkable career, including the Epsom Derby aboard New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2008, the Irish Derby on Trading Leather (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) Hong Kong Cup on Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Gold Away [Ire}) in 2004.

The Kenny Alexander-owned Honeysuckle (GB) (Sulamani {Ire}) was crowned Horse of the Year for the second consecutive year after extending her winning streak to 16 races. She remained unbeaten for a fourth season and added Hatton's Grace Hurdle for a third time, the Irish Champion Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival for a second time, and the Champion Hurdle at Punchestown.

Jockey Sam Ewing received the Emerging Talent Award, the National Hunt Award went to Henry de Bromhead, the National Hunt Achievement Award was won by John 'Shark' Hanlon, Liz Lalor earned the Point-To-Point honor, the Flat Award went to Billy Lee, the Flat Achievement Award was given to Dylan Browne McMonagle and Wayne Lordan was honored with the Ride of the Year for his effort aboard Waterville in the Friends of The Curragh Irish Cesarewitch.
