Research on Remaining Land Inside Lexington’s USB to be Presented March 5

The Fayette Alliance will release two new research studies that analyze the remaining land inside of the Urban Services Boundary in Lexington, Kentucky at an open meeting March 5.

“Grow Smart: Land Use Analysis and Recommendations” and “Lexington-Fayette County Housing Growth Analysis” will be presented on Tuesday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m. ET in Lexington's Central Library Branch's Farish Theatre, 140 E. Main Street in Lexington.

Expanding development outside of the Urban Service Boundary–the circle around the downtown area of Lexington–has been a contentious issue for years in the city as some fight to preserve Lexington's historic horse farms while others argue that some need to be developed in order to accommodate a growing population.

The research studies will be presented and released at an event titled “Mapped: Analyzing Land and Housing Trends in Lexington. ” Attendees will hear from two different urban planning and land-use experts: Stan Harvey–Director of Urban Planning and Design at Lord Aeck Sargent, and Geoff Koski–President of KB Advisory Group, a real estate and economic development advisory firm.

The first presentation, titled “Grow Smart: Land Use Analysis and Recommendations,” will provide a detailed map of the land we have left within the Urban Services Boundary and its
current zoning and acreage. The second presentation, titled “Lexington-Fayette County Housing Growth Analysis,” will focus on how the community might most efficiently utilize our land and reshape development patterns to better accommodate a growing population.

Equine Economic Study Finds Diverse Sectors And Employment Positively Impacted Since 2017

With increases since 2017 in both the total value impacted and equine-related employment, the 2023 findings of the Equine Economic Impact Survey by the American Horse Council (AHC) reflect the positive contributions of the equine industry on the U.S. economy, the organization said via a release Wednesday.

The survey offers a comprehensive overview of the economic impact and trends within the sector and highlights how the industry reaches far beyond the pastures and ranch land across the country.

Highlights include:

Diverse Economic Sectors Impacted: $177 billion. That's the total value added in 2023 from the equine industry, up from $122 billion in 2017. The equine industry's ripple effect extends beyond the traditional sectors, influencing a broad spectrum of industries. From agriculture and tourism to veterinary services and technology, the survey showcases the interconnectedness of the equine world with other economic realms.
Employment Boost: The survey reveals a substantial impact on employment with 2.2 million jobs linked both directly and indirectly to the equine sector. Not only are breeders, trainers, veterinarians and farriers represented, but so are truck drivers, nutritionists, chemists, police officers and journalists.
Slight Downshift in Population: While there is a slight downshift in the total population of horses from 2023 (6.6 million) compared to 2017 (7.2 million), that's only a slight consideration when compared to the growing numbers in jobs and expenditures.

“The Economic Impact Study is the most effective tool in our advocacy quiver,” says Julie Broadway, president of the AHC. “When the industry needs to take aim at an issue, this data is invaluable in helping us paint the picture of the contributions the industry makes and the breath & depth of its composition.”

Tugel, Gibson Join Appointed To Positions at Gainesway

Sean Tugel, who served WinStar Farm as its director of bloodstock services and assistant racing manager for the last decade, and Lakota Gibson, who spent the last five years working alongside David Ingordo in the bloodstock department at Lane’s End Farm, have joined the team at Gainesway.

A native of Rochester, New York, and a Lexington resident since 2004, Tugel has been named the director of stallion sales and recruitment. He has also served in management roles at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm and Paul’s Mill.

“We’re excited about adding Sean to our team,” said Brian Graves, Gainesway’s General Manager. “He has established a wide network of relationships with breeders and owners through his reputation built on honesty and horsemanship. He brings a depth of experience from both the farm and the racetrack, which will be a great benefit to our clientele.”

Said Tugel: “From the beginning of my career, I’ve been lucky to work and learn from some of the best horsemen and women in our industry. Gainesway has an unbelievably rich history in the Thoroughbred industry and Mr. Beck’s passion for the sport and future of the farm is infectious. I look forward to giving our existing clients and new clients an extended reach to help them with all of their bloodstock needs.”

In addition to her more recent work at Lane’s End, Gibson also has close ties with Coolmore, having worked for the Australian branch of the stud in the Hunter Valley. She later relocated back to Kentucky and worked for Ashford Stud for an additional 3 1/2 years. Gibson will primarily focus on Gainesway’s sales and seasons.
