Can Surgical Removal Of A Mare’s Ovaries Fix Unwanted Behaviors?

A Danish study investigated if removing a mare's ovaries could offer relief from unexplained unwanted behavior. The changes in behavior were assessed by the owners of the horses. Some mares used in the study had ovarian cancer; others had no veterinary-diagnosed reason for their unwanted behavior.

Removing the ovaries was final attempt to resolve the unwanted behaviors as drug use to stop their reproductive cycles had failed and no issues with their reproductive tract could be found. Unwanted mare behavior can range from being uncooperative to aggression aimed at humans or other horses.

Drs. Daniel Taasti Melgaard, Martin Soendergaard Thoefner, Trine Stokbro Korsgaard, Morten Roenn Petersen and Hanne Gervi Pedersen, used the records of 28 mares that had their ovaries removed six to 24 months earlier and followed up with the horse owners, asking them to complete a questionnaire and respond to a telephone interview. Ten of the horses in the study had normal ovaries, 14 of the mares had ovarian cancer in one or both ovaries, and the other ovaries of the other horses were not examined for the presence of cancer.

Eight out of the ten mares (80 percent) with normal ovaries had improved rideability after their ovaries were removed; rideability improved in 57 percent (eight out of 14) in the mares with ovarian cancer. Mare behavior improved in about 40 percent of the cases studied.

The researchers conclude that mares without ovarian cancer may benefit as much from ovary removal as mares with ovarian cancer, showing improved rideability and behavior, though there is no obvious explanation as to why mares with normal ovaries benefited. The team noted that owner perception of improved behavior could be a placebo effect because they assumed the operation would work. They also stress that horses have a through diagnostic workup to rule out other issues before an ovariectomy is performed,

A Look At Equine Markets Amidst COVID-19

Jill Stowe, PhD, associate professor in the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment's Department of Agricultural Economics, presented at the UK Ag Equine Programs' monthly Equine Forum virtual meeting June 24 about the impact COVID-19 is having on equine markets.

She began by giving attendees a definition of a recession, which is a period in the business cycle where economic activity declines (often measured by declines in growth in Gross Domestic Product, or GDP). In the U.S., a recession is often defined by two consecutive quarters of declines in GDP.

According to Stowe, a recession results in an increase in unemployment, decrease in income, decrease in consumer spending, rising business failures and a falling stock market. Recessions have many different sources, including bursting of financial bubbles, credit crunches and, as we are experiencing, pandemics. These contractions are a normal part of the business cycle (there have been five recessions in the past 40 years as a reference), but they are normally short-lived; since the Great Depression, the longest recession lasted 18 months, from December 2007 through June 2009.

Stowe said that an “official” U.S. recession (characterized to two consecutive quarters of GDP declines) is likely if the coronavirus pandemic lasts longer than expected, but acknowledged that significant economic hardships are already being realized. For instance, in Kentucky (as of June 4), nearly 886,000 people had filed for unemployment, which is approximately 43 percent of Kentucky's eligible workforce.

Governments attempt to counteract economic contractions by getting people spending (consumer spending constitutes 70 percent of GDP) through lower interest rates and fiscal stimulus packages. Since interest rates are already near historic lows, for the current crisis, the government is relying on stimulus checks to encourage consumer spending.

She also noted that there are two types of “normal” economic goods, necessity and luxury. A normal good is one which experiences increasing demand when income rises. The rate of demand increase determines whether the normal good is a necessity or luxury good. When income increases, demand for luxury goods increases at an increasing rate; however, when income decreases (like during a recession), demand declines at an increasing rate. Consequently, industries involving luxury goods are more volatile than necessity goods. Relevant to the discussion at hand, she noted that from an economic perspective, horses are considered luxury goods.

Moreover, the equine industry is one of Kentucky's signature industries and constitutes one of the most important sectors in Kentucky's agricultural economy. In fact, the equine industry has been characterized as an economic cluster in Central Kentucky, which describes a network of geographically connected organizations and institutions.

Taken together, it is likely that Kentucky's equine industry will be hit harder than most by contractions in the economy. First, in an economic sense, equine markets act like markets for luxury goods and hence are more volatile. Second, due to the equine industry's organization as an economic cluster and its prominence in Kentucky's agricultural industry, the overall impact on Kentucky's economy is magnified and far-reaching.

Stowe considered it instructive to summarize lessons learned from the last recession in 2008-2009  in order to predict how equine markets might react to the current economic climate. Stowe said that nationwide, effects on equine markets included a decline in the number of mares bred and foals produced, a decline in organization memberships, a drop in sales prices and sales revenue, a small decline in competitions and increased animal welfare issues.

The immediate effects of the COVID-19 shutdown have been felt primarily by competitions and sales, and perhaps to a lesser extent  boarding and training operations. The shutdown resulted in the cancellation or postponement of local, regional, national and international equine events, including the postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games and cancelation of more than 2,900 FEI competitions in the three-month span following implementation of COVID-19 restrictions. Losing these competitions has a number of negative consequences, including loss of regional economic development, lost income for individuals and lost revenue for organizations.

The shutdown has also resulted in “clogged” pipelines in the equine market as sales were canceled, postponed, or significantly decreased, she said. Getting the pipeline moving will be a key to recovery and noted that watching the first sales resuming in late June might provide an indication of what is to come for sales later this fall.

Boarding and training operations across the world have been faced with a variety of restrictions. In some areas, riding was prohibited and barns were closed to all but essential employees. Many equine professionals were, for a time, were unable to give lessons, clinics and coach at competitions.

At the onset of the COVID-19 restrictions, equine veterinary clinics delayed elective procedures for a time. As restrictions were gradually lifted and with human protections still in place, they are now able to operating close to normal. Hay and feed markets, which are actually more sensitive to weather variations, seem to be unaffected, but should labor shortages arise, availability issues and/or price increases may ensue.

According to Stowe, the long run outlook will depend on a number of factors. The longer the economic restrictions last, the larger the impact will be. In addition, whether the recovery follows a V-shape (quick recovery), a U-shape (a prolonged recovery), an L-shape (no recovery), or something in between. Going forward, unemployment, GDP and disposable income will all be important metrics for recovery in the equine industry.

Stowe and colleague Bob Coleman, PhD, PAS, Dip. ACAN, associate professor and equine extension specialist in UK's Department of Animal and Food Sciences, are launching a research project estimating the impacts from COVID-19 in Kentucky, specifically focusing on breeding, sales, competitions and boarding and training facilities. They will be distributing a series of surveys beginning this fall and expect to be able to share results in 2021.

Discover Florida: State Partnership With University Of Florida Benefits All

As COVID-19 upends the Florida economy, hurting agricultural businesses across the state, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services continues to strengthen its strong partnership with the University of Florida and its Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).

“This unprecedented pandemic has taken its toll on Florida's agricultural community, including farmers, ranchers, breeders and aquaculturists. As a result, we need detailed, accurate information to effectively impact our recovery efforts,” said Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried. “The University of Florida's IFAS study on the pandemic's impact has helped our local, state and federal government to take action.”

Within days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a collaborative effort was quickly established between the agencies to inform the equine and farm communities across Florida on a number of essential issues including: care of horses and other livestock during a pandemic, owner preparedness, access to feed and farm supplies, sanitation practices, emergency veterinary services and biosecurity.

Working in partnership with University of Florida assistant professors Drs. Carissa Wickens, PhD and Sally DeNotta, DVM, the Florida Department of Agriculture together with its animal industry division were able to share important information with Florida horse owners and farmers across the state.

The COVID-19 pandemic study represents just one of the ways in which UF/IFAS and FDACS have continued to work together to share vital scientific information and knowledge to assist Florida's agriculture and equine industries.

As another example, the agencies have fostered close collaborations through the Livestock Education and Certification for Agricultural Law Enforcement (LECALE) program. The program was developed in partnership with the Florida Farm Bureau and Florida sheriffs.

“The main objective of the program is to provide law enforcement and state attorney personnel with rigorous and relevant training curriculum to better understand livestock production, animal well-being practices, and to acquire knowledge during litigation proceedings,” said Dr. Carissa Wickens, Assistant Professor and State Extension Horse Specialist with the University of Florida.

“Participation offers law enforcement personnel a great opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills regarding livestock animal production and handling, with an emphasis on cattle and equine behavior, health, and welfare assessment.”

Additional joint programs also focus on best management practices related to manure and pasture management for equine operations leading to positive benefits for the environment and horse health. These include important variables applicable to Thoroughbred owners, breeders and facilities.

UF/IFAS researchers have also helped Florida farmers identify areas where the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services can assist horse owners and managers in improving the management of both their animals and facilities.

UF/IFAS Industrial Hemp Pilot Project

The second year of the UF/IFAS Industrial Hemp Pilot Project has also kicked off and continues to move forward. The project's official website contains in-depth coverage regarding the goals of the project, how to stay up to date on the latest information, and opportunities to help support continuous research. In addition, a statewide hemp communications team comprised of local and regional UF/IFAS county extension agents, faculty and researchers has been established to provide information, guidance and presentation materials.

The Florida Department of Agriculture has also launched the state's online Hemp Cultivation Licensing Portal, allowing interested growers to apply for a license to grow the crop for the first time. The FDACS hemp website contains information on rules and regulations, established guidelines and more.

Cryopreservation Of Equine Stem Cells For Cartilage Repair

Cryopreservation is the next exciting stage of research in stem cell therapy. Dr. Thomas Koch and his team are working to preserve cartilage chips for long-term storage, which would enable off-the-shelf use to treat localized cartilage defects. Defects that very often shorten or end horses' athletic careers.

Cryopreservation (or vitrification) is the formation of a solid from an aqueous solution without the formation of ice crystals. Using cartilage chips created from equine umbilical cord blood, this next stage in research has the potential to change the way cartilage defects are treated.

If cryopreserved, stored cells can be used; treatment would be very efficient, with no need to harvest stem cells from the patient. This means fewer visits, less waiting and faster treatment.

An injection of funding from Ontario Equestrian allowed for a preliminary study to find out if they were able to vitrify equine cartilage stem cells well from cadavers. “We are very excited to have received this support,” says Koch. “The preliminary study will allow for future funding sources from both equine specific and human medicine.”

The Ontario Veterinary College is currently working in collaboration with a world-renown cartilage vitrification specialist, Dr. Jomha Nadr, and his team at the University of Alberta, Edmonton to establish a robust vitrification protocol for eCB-MSC-derived neocartilage. The work will generate pivotal data to support the clinical evaluation of cryopreserved allogenic eCBMSC cartilage chips to repair focal cartilage defects in research horses. Fully implemented, this therapy would provide a safe, efficacious, and technically simple treatment for horses as well as provide an opportunity for a Canadian biotechnology business to bank and distribute vitrified cartilage tissue in unlimited quantities to the world market.

The future of regenerative therapies are exciting, and the potential applications are wide ranging, from treating cartilage defects to potentially delaying the onset of osteo-arthritic changes to treating bacterial infections and inflammation. “We believe this work has the long-term potential to benefit both horses and humans through the development of novel off-the-shelf cell-based therapies for damaged joint cartilage,” says Koch.
