2020 AAEP Convention And Trade Show Goes Virtual

The American Association of Equine Practitioners announced today that the 2020 AAEP Annual Convention & Trade Show, originally scheduled for Dec. 5 through 9 in Las Vegas, NV, will take place instead as a virtual event. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the potential safety risks to AAEP members, staff, exhibitors and others attending necessitated the move.

The newly envisioned AAEP Virtual Annual Convention & Trade Show will include many of the popular elements which have brought equine veterinarians together annually for nearly seven decades: peer-reviewed education; camaraderie with colleagues; and connection to Trade Show exhibitors from all sectors of the veterinary market.

The exact dates for December's Virtual Convention & Trade Show and the schedule of sessions and events will be announced in September. The educational program will offer a blend of live and on-demand sessions, ensuring practitioners can conveniently earn CE hours based on their personal schedules.

“The AAEP Convention is not only an educational experience but an important gathering for our close-knit community of Horse Doctors,” said AAEP President Dr. David Frisbie. “While we may not be together in the same city this year, the Virtual Convention promises to offer the connection that so many of us are seeking after the disruption of 2020.”

Registration for the Virtual Annual Convention & Trade Show will open in September and offer a different pricing structure than the in-person event. Those who have already registered for Las Vegas will be contacted by AAEP staff.

2020 New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show And Thoroughbred Incentive Program September Championships Cancelled

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program and The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) have jointly agreed to cancel their 2020 hunter/jumper/pleasure horse show that was slated for September 3-6 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

“We are deeply disappointed to cancel the 2020 hunter/jumper horse show, but after ongoing discussions with show management, Kentucky Horse Park event staff, and horse show managers of other events held at the park, the decision to cancel the event was made,” says Sarah Coleman, director of community and public relations for New Vocations. “Multiple factors contributed to this outcome, including the cancellation of other Kentucky Horse Park championship events, the spike in COVID-19 cases throughout the country, various state travel restrictions that would affect many exhibitors, and the inability to ensure that the regional governments would not force the cancellation of the event, potentially once the show was underway.”

The dressage competition, set to run Oct. 3 and 4 at the Kentucky Horse Park, remains on the schedule. Show management will evaluate the event in the coming weeks and will announce a decision on holding the show prior to the opening of entries in late August.

Now in its sixth year, the New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show raises much-needed funds to enable the program to rehabilitate, retrain, and rehome retiring Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses. The T.I.P. Championships celebrate qualified Thoroughbreds in a variety of disciplines. Run concurrently, the shows typically host more than 400 Thoroughbreds at the Kentucky Horse Park each fall.

Sponsors for the New Vocations All-Thoroughbred Charity Horse Show will have several options, including shifting support to a virtual competition in late September. Details of this virtual event are forthcoming.

”Event staff held a lengthy discussion over the last few days and the cancellation was not an easy decision,” says Kristin Werner, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and coordinator of T.I.P. “Ultimately the health and safety of our competitors, officials, and staff far outweigh any event.”

T.I.P. is exploring consolation competition options for early 2021; at this time, the All-Thoroughbred Charity Show and T.I.P. Championships for fall 2021 are expected to run as planned, and horses qualified and declared by the August 3 deadline for the 2020 championships will be eligible to participate in the 2021 events. “Tippy” The Crash Test Dummy Used To Make Equine Transport Safer

Areion Australia has made an equine crash test dummy that will be used to improve safety features in horse trailers. The company, founded by engineer Tom Hotchkin, is working on the creation of a prototype trailer that has rear-facing bays. Hauling horses in this manner means that if the trailer were to be involved in a crash, the brunt of the impact would be absorbed by the horse's hindquarters, rather than his head or neck.

“Tippy” is an 18-hand, 1,600-pound horse made of rubber. Hotchkin says that using a dummy will allow researchers to see what happens to horses involved in a trailer crash. From there, his company will be able to develop trailer technology that will better protect the horse.

The prototype trailer is made from plastic, so the surface is softer and smoother than traditional steel or aluminum trailers. It also features a patented restraint system that is like a seatbelt. The first trailers with these features are expected to be released next year.

Brooke USA Funds Equine Organizations With Micro-grants During Pandemic

The Board of Directors of Brooke USA has approved $32,500, to date, in micro-grants for 20 equine organizations in distress during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The fund disbursements were made from Brooke USA's COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund which was designed to address the need for financial aid across the globe due to the pandemic. In response to the spread of the coronavirus, Brooke USA is committed to meeting the needs of equine-dependent communities impacted by the pandemic both in the United States and abroad.

Brooke USA recognizes that in the developing world there is a lack of health care facilities, medical supplies are not readily available, and living in highly crowded communal situations exacerbates the risk of spread. Moreover, the international community which normally offers aid is hard pressed to help because every nation is dealing with their own problems related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“At Brooke USA we know that when equine owners suffer, so do their animals thus, it is imperative that we do what we can to help right now. We are uniquely positioned to provide aid where the need is greatest. And, it is our hope that equine-friendly businesses, individuals and philanthropists will continue to support us in this fight against this virus which is taking a toll on all of us,” said Emily Dulin, Brooke USA's Chief Executive Officer.

The funds raised are used to support response and recovery efforts which vary from nation to nation, and community to community. Brooke USA understands that needs in each area are individual. In some communities, this may mean providing care for working animals whose owners have been impacted by the pandemic. In others, it may involve providing horse feed to a family who can no longer work due illness or economic distress.
