Breeders’ Cup Sprint Winner, Our Mims Retirement Haven Resident Elmhurst Dies At Age 31

Our Mims Retirement Haven in Paris, Ky., mourns the loss of 31-year-old, Elmhurst (1990, Wild Again x Mimbet), grandson of Our Mims. Elmhurst left this earth on Jan. 4 due to heart failure.

Elmhurst raced 51 times with eight wins, 10 seconds and six third-place finishes, winning a total of $1,100,567. His most notable win was the 1997 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

He arrived at “The Haven” on Nov. 1, 2011. He quickly became a favorite of not only the ladies of Our Mims Retirement Haven, but also the people who came to visit. Since he was born on Feb. 14, he was crowned the King of Hearts and was notorious for his antics with women. He had been known to pop bra straps. If he saw cleavage, he would pull the shirt out and look down.

OMRH owner and president Pete Mirabito commented, “Thank you 'Elmo' for filling my wife Jeanne's heart with joy.”

“Mo was truly one of a kind,” said Ann Cheek, OMRH vice president. “A real ladies' man. I will miss his flirty ways and sweet whisper nickers.”

Sidna Madden, director of development noted, “Elmhurst was an amazing guy – a true gentleman that embodied everything I love about Thoroughbreds. He proudly helped carry the name of the Haven in memory of his granddam, Our Mims. I will certainly miss his antics, along with his loving spirit too, but it brings a smile to my face knowing he and Jeanne, along with Our Mims and all the other ladies of the Haven that have gone before him, are now all reunited. His longevity is also a true testament to the care that all of the horses at the Haven receive.”

After being cremated, Elmhurst will be laid to rest in the farm's Invincible Spirit cemetery.

Research Update: The Impact Of Packaging On The Stability Of Horse Treats

Horse treat packaging may be composed of materials including plastic and paper which protect the product from the environment to improve shelf life. The objectives of this research, conducted at Southern Illinois University, were to assess the impact of packaging on shelf life of horse treats, and to evaluate the impact of packaging on horse preferences.

Three packaging treatments were examined over a 12-month period. Treatments included a control (stored in solid-sheet polyethylene bags at -112 degrees F), polyethylene bags (stored at ambient temperature and relative humidity), and paper bags (single ply paper bags at ambient temperature and relative humidity).

Moisture content and water activity increased in all treatments from month 0 to month 12, with paper packaging providing a greater fluctuation and containing visible mold at month 12. No difference was observed in horse preference. However, a trend for the number of treats consumed was observed, with treats stored in polyethylene bags increasing in preference while treats stored in paper bags decreased. The researcher's concluded that packaging-type impacted shelf life and horse preference of treats. For more information on this research, the abstract can be assessed from the Journal of Equine Veterinary Medicine.

Prats Keep Now-Retired Crosscheck Carlos All In The Family, Even In Retirement

Stakes winner Crosscheck Carlos may be retired from the racetrack, but I Am Horse Racing points out he's still seeing some familiar faces in his new career. The 7-year-old was piloted by jockey Flavien Prat during his maiden victory in 2016 at Santa Anita, and after his retirement the following year, he was adopted by Prat's wife Manon.

Manon Prat retired from her work as an exercise rider and said that he work with Crosscheck Carlos gives her a way to remain involved with horses beyond watching her husband's career.

Prat and Crosscheck Carlos went to their first jumper show and have a good base to build their new skills together.

Crosscheck Carlos retired the winner of the D.S. Shine Young Futurity and runner-up in the Barretts Juvenile Stakes and Gold Rush Futurity.

Hats Off To The Horses: Sale Of Afleet Accompli Chapeau Benefits Old Friends

For the 12th consecutive year, Maggie Mae Designs® and Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement have teamed up for an unparalleled online shopping experience: “Hats off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby”.

This unique fundraiser features one-of-a-kind couture hats created by Maggie Mae Designs®, the sale of which benefits Old Friends.

The first hat up for bid in our auction series, which kicks off Jan. 1, 2021, honors Afleet Accompli, a son of Northern Afleet who came to Old Friends via the sister aftercare organization Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare.

Bidding in this online auction will be available through January 11, 5:00 pm (EST). To bid, CLICK HERE.

Afleet Accompli spent most of his career running at Camarero Racecourse in Puerto Rico. The green and yellow racing silks of his Canito Racing racing stable inspired a tropical island palette for the trimmings of this stunning Derby-style hat.

A large hat foundation was created using stunning coral taffeta. Using yards of chocolate organza lined with coral organza, the wavy brim layers were topstitched with coral embroidered strands to reflect the rippling movement of the Thoroughbred athlete at full gallop.

To further showcase the stable's colors, a large rose curl, created in alternating layers of coral shantung and hot pink organza, adorns the front of the hat. This floral centerpiece is framed with leaves created out of lime green organza and taffeta.

A lime green taffeta sash lined with organza was fashioned to encircle the crown of the hat and a small peach button adorns the sash in the back.

As always, a physical remembrance, several strands of Afleet Accompli's tail hair, were braided and woven into the trim of the hat.

Bidding is open now. To bid CLICK HERE.
