Nationwide Equine-Based Training Available For Individuals Affected By Memory Loss

The Connected Horse Facilitator Training Academy, based in the Bay Area of California, has opened its barn doors to individuals and stables wishing to learn more about how horses can help people affected by memory loss and dementia, as well as their caretakers.

The organization is the first to offer nationwide, in-depth, evidence-based training to guide unmounted interactions between participants and horses. The training involves in-person and virtual sessions.

People affected by memory changes may struggle with anxiety, depression, and a sense of disconnection, while their caretakers may feel apathetic, isolated or hopeless. The Connected Horse Program addresses the affected person and their caretaker together.

The program was designed with input from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, Alzheimer's Disease Center, School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Center for Equine Health. Stanford University School of Medicine and the Red Barn Leadership Program also had input in program development.

Initial studies have shown that program participants feel more supported and self-aware; they also report reduced anxiety and depression and better sleep. The program offers effective, non-pharmaceutical tools to improve the lives of people living with dementia and memory issues.

In-person training sessions will take place in March 2023 in Minden, Nevada; additional training will be offered throughout the year. The training includes 16 hours of continuing education credits for those involved in the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH). It also offers educational resources, coaching, evaluation tools and recertification.

Connected Horse also offers Virtual Barn and Sensory Engagement Kits, which creates a virtual “day at the barn” for those who can't attend in person or for those who would like additional at-home tools for engagement and mindfulness.

Aidan Butler, Cannonstone Pledge $2,500 One-Day Match Donation To TAA Holiday Giving Campaign

As part of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)'s month-long Holiday Giving Campaign, Aidan Butler and his beloved off-track Thoroughbred Cannonstone have pledged to match all donations up to $2,500 made to the TAA on Dec. 24, 2022.

A major pillar in racetrack stewardship, Butler strives to elevate the sport of racing through safety, innovation, and a long-term commitment to fund sustainable aftercare initiatives— including the TAA. Long before Butler's induction to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Board of Directors in 2022, the Chief Executive Officer of 1/ST RACING & GAMING had proven his dedication to supporting the TAA through numerous 1/ST racetrack funding initiatives.

Butler adopted “Stone” from TAA-accredited Secretariat Center in 2019. Cannonstone represents one out of approximately 15,000 retired racehorses whose transition from racing to second career was facilitated by funding from the TAA. Now, Butler and Stone wish to support the TAA and its 81 accredited organizations during the TAA Holiday Giving Campaign.

“The TAA is vital to the success and longevity of our racing industry,” said 1/ST RACING & GAMING Chief Executive Officer, Aidan Butler. “On a personal level, I wouldn't have my beloved horse Cannonstone without the TAA and their network of accredited groups (or the vet bills, but he's worth it). We are all in this together and if we continue to put the horse first, success will follow. Please join Stone and I to give back to the horses that truly give us everything.”

“We appreciate Aidan's commitment to the TAA and to the Thoroughbreds,” said TAA Operations Consultant, Stacie Clark. “Aidan's horse Cannonstone has been a wonderful mascot not only for aftercare but for all fans of Thoroughbreds and racing.”

TAA's Holiday Giving Campaign commenced November 29th and is scheduled to conclude New Year's Eve. Those wishing to support the TAA, its 81 accredited organizations, and thousands of retired Thoroughbreds can donate through the TAA's website or text DONATE to 56651. During the Holiday Giving Campaign, TAA is also offering donors the benefit of sending digital holiday cards to colleagues, friends, and loved ones.

Throughout the end of the year, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will continue to host special one-day only donation matches with some of horse racing's biggest names. For more chances to double your donation, watch the TAA's social media, website, and industry advertisements for the next Holiday Giving match day announcement.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Benefit: Watch Gulfstream’s Pete Aiello Call A Race

Beginning Dec. 26 – Opening Day of Gulfstream Park's Championship Meet – fans will be able to meet and watch track announcer Pete Aiello call a race from high above the track while helping to retrain, rehome and retire Thoroughbreds.

For a $50 donation per person, up to six fans can watch the popular Aiello call a race from the announcer's booth and get a view of South Florida all the way to the ocean.

Aiello, a native of West Palm Beach, grew up attending the races at Gulfstream, Hialeah Park and Calder Race Course. A graduate of the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program, Aiello called races at River Downs, California fairs and Oaklawn Park before arriving at Gulfstream in 2016.

“The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance is very grateful to the team at Gulfstream Park and Peter Aiello for this unique and fun way to raise funds and awareness for aftercare. We hope fans of racing will embrace this experience to have an exciting birds-eye view of Thoroughbred racing while joining Pete and supporting a great cause,” said Stacie Clark-Rogers, TAA's Operation Consultant.

“I love meeting racing fans and I applaud the efforts of the TAA so it is a perfect marriage. I look forward to showing everyone a great time raising money for a great cause,” Aiello said.

Thoroughbred Charities Of America To Honor Maggi Moss, Second Stride

Thoroughbred Charities of America will honor Maggi Moss with the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award and Second Stride with the Ellen and Herb Moelis Industry Service Award at the 33rd Annual Stallion Season Auction and 'Tis the Season Celebration presented by Mt. Brilliant on Sunday, January 8, 2023, at Grand Reserve in Lexington, Ky.

The Allaire du Pont Leadership Award is presented annually to an organization or individual whose philanthropic endeavors are consistent with TCA's mission. Past award winners include Jen Roytz, LNJ Foxwoods, Dan Rosenberg, Barbara Banke, Bourbon Lane Stable, Graham and Anita Motion, Frank Stronach, Fasig-Tipton, Darley, Todd Pletcher, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, and Madeline Auerbach.

From Des Moines, Iowa, Maggi Moss is a successful Thoroughbred owner, attorney, and staunch advocate for equine welfare. Maggi started riding Hunter Jumpers when she was 9 and competed nationally in show jumping, winning national championships at Madison Square Garden, Washington International, and many others. After over two decades in the show horse world Maggi turned her attention to Thoroughbred racehorses. In 2006, she became the first woman in America since 1945 to be named leading owner in the U.S. for races won. She has been leading owner at multiple tracks including Aqueduct, Belmont Park, Fair Grounds, Churchill Downs, and Prairie Meadows. Throughout her time in racing, Maggi has worked to advocate for the importance of Thoroughbred aftercare. She serves in an advisory role to several aftercare organizations and was on the founding boards of Hope After Racing Thoroughbreds (HART) in Iowa and the National Thoroughbred Welfare Organization (NTWO). Her dedication to the well-being of Thoroughbreds during and after their racing careers exemplify the spirit of the Allaire du Pont Leadership Award.

The Ellen and Herb Moelis Industry Service Award is presented annually to an organization that works to uphold TCA's mission. Second Stride works to safely and responsibly retrain and rehome Thoroughbreds and, since their inception, over 1,400 Thoroughbreds have been rehomed. Second Stride's program is unique in many ways including the new Broodmare and Bloodstock program which focuses on breeding industry bloodstock in need of transition to third or even fourth careers.  Second Strides' specialized training programs are designed to help decrease the transition time for horses needing a new career and their low horse return rate is illustrative of the time and effort spent by staff to ensure a good match between horse and owner.
