Texas Red Yearling Tops Indiana Fall Mixed Sale

The Indiana Thoroughbred Owners And Breeders Association Fall Mixed Sale was held Saturday, Oct. 31, and posted positive results despite the impact of COVID-19 forcing the sale to relocate from its traditional location at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino to nearby Smith Training Stables in Fountaintown, Ind.

A total of 69 horses went through the ring, with 66 selling for a total of $263,400 and an average of $3,991.

The highest price was for Hip 68, an Indiana-bred yearling gelding by Texas Red out of the stakes-placed River Special mare Color Me Special. Consigned by Dawn Martin, the April foal sold for $18,200 to Roger Spiess.

“While COVID-19 threatened the sale, so many people came together to make it a success,” said ITOBA president Bruce Murphy. “A big thank you goes to all the consignors and buyers for making this sale possible, as well as to Duane Swingley Auctioneers and everyone at ITOBA who put in so much work to make it happen. And a huge thanks also go to Randy and Debbie Smith of Smith Training Stables for serving as tremendous hosts. We are excited to see the young sale graduates in the starting gates at Indiana Grand in the coming years, and we look forward to seeing the broodmare graduates produce some great Indiana-breds in the future.

“The fact that we only had three horses that didn't meet their reserve shows that there was strong demand for horses and breeding stock to participate in the Indiana program,” he added.

Into Mischief Weanling, Recent Winner Wasp Added To Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged two new supplemental entries to its 2020 November Sale. These latest entries are catalogued as hips 286 and 287:

'20 Into Mischief-Greenfield d'Oro colt (Hip 286): Weanling colt by North America's current leading sire Into Mischief. His dam, by Medaglia d'Oro, is a winner-producing daughter of Eclipse champion Maryfield. Consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.
Wasp (Hip 287): Three-year-old daughter of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah recently broke her maiden at Belmont by more than 10 lengths on October 30, going 1 1/16 miles on dirt. She was second, beaten just a neck, sprinting in her career debut. A registered New York-bred, she is from the family of grade 1 winners Evening Jewel, Denman's Call, General Challenge, and Notable Career. Consigned as a racing/broodmare prospect by Claiborne Farm, agent.

Fasig-Tipton will continue to accept approved November Sale supplemental entries through the Breeders' Cup.

The November Sale will be held this coming Sunday, Nov. 8, in Lexington, Ky. The sale will begin at 2 p.m. Online bidding and phone bidding will be available.

Tattersalls To Explore All Options For December Sales Facing COVID-19 Lockdown

In response to the British government announcement on Saturday, Oct. 31 imposing a nationwide lockdown from Thursday, Nov. 5 to Wednesday, Dec. 2, Tattersalls will be exploring all possible options and dates for staging the 2020 Tattersalls December Sales.

Commenting on the current position, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“As has so often been the case this year, we are having to respond to events and decisions entirely outside our control, but we would like to assure vendors and purchasers alike that our overriding priority is to stage the 2020 Tattersalls December Sales prior to Christmas. Naturally, our preferred option is to stage the December Sales on the existing scheduled dates and we are currently seeking clarity from the government as to whether bloodstock auctions are allowed to take place during the lockdown period. In the meantime in consultation with both Goffs and Arqana we will be looking to establish viable alternative dates with the joint aim of providing the industry with workable solutions to the challenges we all face.

“We will endeavor to provide the industry with definitive answers as soon as possible and while we regret the uncertainty and disruption caused by the new lockdown, we will continue to do everything in our power to stage sales at Tattersalls as safely as possible and at all times in full compliance with prevailing regulations.”

Classic Empire Colt Leads Final Session Of Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale

A colt from the first crop of 2016 Eclipse champion 2-year-old male Classic Empire led five yearlings sold for $200,000 or more during the final session of the 2020 Kentucky October Yearlings sale on Thursday in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Classic Empire colt topped the session when sold for $310,000 to Mike Ryan, agent from the consignment of St George Sales, agent (video).

Offered as Hip 1398, the bay colt is out of the winning Bernardini mare Delay of Game, whose first foal, Spa Ready (Street Sense), was a 3 1/4-length winner on debut last month at Belmont Park. The immediate family includes U.S. and European champion 2-year-old colt Johannesburg. The session-topper was bred in New York by EKQ Stables Corp.

Four other yearlings sold for $200,000 or more during the final session, including:

Hip 1173, a colt by Empire Maker out of Bagatelle Park (Speightstown), sold for $200,000 to Tonja Terranova, agent from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. From the immediate family of Grade 1 winner Seattle Slew, the colt was bred in Kentucky by D. H. Steve Conboy & Empire Maker Syndicate.
Hip 1372, a filly by Empire Maker out of Curlin's Mistress (Curlin), sold for $200,000 to X-Men Racing LLC from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. Out of a full sister to multiple Grade 2 winner Curlin's Approval, the filly was bred in Florida by Happy Alter and Empire Maker Syndicate.
Hip 1422, a filly by Constitution out of Distinct Sparkle (With Distinction), sold for $200,000 to Shepherd Equine Advisors, agent for Sanders and Hirsch from the consignment of Bluewater Sales, agent. From the immediate family of Breeders' Cup winner Very Subtle, the filly was bred in Pennsylvania by Roberta L. Schneider MD.
Hip 1534, a filly by Nyquist out of Four Sugars (Lookin At Lucky), sold for $200,000 to Oracle Bloodstock, agent from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. A half-sister to multiple Grade/Group 1 placed stakes winner Gronkowski, the filly was bred in Kentucky by Diamond Creek Farm.

During the final session, 235 yearlings sold for a $7,290,900, good for an average of $31,025. The session median was $15,000. Over the course of four days of selling, 961 yearlings changed hands for $32,743,000. The average was $34,073. The four-day median was $15,000, a 15 percent increase over the median posted during the 2019 sale.
