Keeneland Reveals 2021 Digital Sales Ring Schedule

The Keeneland Digital Sales Ring, the stand-alone online auction platform that debuted in 2020, has scheduled seven mixed sales for 2021.

The first digital sale is set for March 23, followed by sales in May, June, July, August, October and December (see dates for sales, entry open/close and catalog availability at the conclusion of this release).

Keeneland developed the Digital Sales Ring together with Kentucky-based technology company Horseco and in 2020 conducted sales in June, October and December. The platform offers Keeneland the flexibility to host small, select online auctions throughout the year in addition to its four major live sales in January, April, September and November. These online auctions also allow sellers the opportunity to take advantage of timely updates in offering racing and breeding stock.

“We are excited to announce the 2021 schedule for the Keeneland Digital Sales Ring, which continues to grow the online market and expand the services Keeneland is able to provide its sales clients,” Keeneland director of sales development Mark Maronde said. “The Digital Sales Ring offers tremendous convenience and flexibility for sellers and buyers, who can fully participate in the auction process and present horses for sale regardless of location.”

“We thank the buyers and consignors who supported the Digital Sales Ring during its launch in 2020,” Keeneland president, CEO and interim director of sales Shannon Arvin said. “Keeneland has always been a leader in Thoroughbred sales and we look forward to employing further enhancements to the online platform and digital catalog.”

On the day of each sale, online bidding will open at 10 a.m. ET and begin to close at 2 p.m.

Beloveda, Saguaro Row Top Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale

The Kentucky Winter Mixed sale, the final breeding stock sale before the breeding sheds open, ended Tuesday with gains across the board. The sale took place at Fasig-Tipton's Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky.

Beloveda (Hip 328), a daughter of Ghostzapper in foal to Street Sense, topped the sale when sold for $510,000 from the consignment of Gainesway, agent.

A graded stakes placed winner herself, Beloveda is the dam of two winners from three to race, including stakes placed Mistress of Love (Scat Daddy). The chestnut mare is a half-sister to graded stakes winner and stakes producer Golden Mystery, as well as of All Saint's Day, whose six winners to date include stakes winners Holywell and Sinister Brew.

The sale's top racing/broodmare prospect was multiple stakes winner Saguaro Row (Hip 675), a six-year-old daughter of Union Rags.

The bay mare was purchased for $500,000 by Catherine Hudson, agent from the consignment of Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent. A two-time stakes winner and graded stakes placed runner, Saguaro Row earned $342,354 for owners Newtown Anner Stud Farm and Mark D. Breen and trainer Michael Stidham. She is a half-sister to stakes winner Pinnacle Peak out of a half-sister to champion filly and Grade 2 winner My Wandy's Girl.

Stakes winner Whoa Nellie (Hip 625) was the best-selling broodmare prospect, purchased by $450,000 by St Elias Stables from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Fox Hill Farms. A twice graded stakes-placed stakes winner, the daughter Orb won six times for owner Fox Hill Farms and trainer Larry Jones, with earnings of $353,830.

Other broodmare prospects sold for $400,000 or more include:

Gold Standard (Hip 671), a multiple stakes placed winner by Medaglia d'Oro sold for $435,000 to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings from the consignment of Gainesway, agent for Stonestreet and LNJ Foxwoods; and
Fiftyshades Ofgreen (Hip 640), a stakes placed daughter of Bernardini, sold for $400,000 to St Elias Stables from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.

The sale's top short yearling came in the form of a Nyquist colt (Hip 480) out of multiple Grade 2 placed winner Honey Chile. The chestnut colt was purchased for $170,000 by Machmer Hall from the consignment of Bill Reightler, agent. The West Virginia-foaled colt's second dam is multiple stakes winner Christmas Time, who also produced his dam's multiple stakes winning full brother Prince of Time.

Last-out Jimmy Winkfield Stakes winner Hello Hot Rod (Hip 672) sold for $335,000 as the top racing and/or stallion prospect. The dark bay Maryland-bred colt by Mosler was purchased by George Sharp from the consignment of ELiTE, agent. Hello Hot Rod is a half-brother to five-time stakes winner Hello Beautiful, from the immediate family of Grade 2 winners Hello Liberty and Significant Form.

During the two-sale sale, 425 horses sold for a gross of $12,506,700, up 28 percent from $9,777,100 for 368 sold in 2020. The average was $29,428, an 11 percent increase over last year's average of $26,568. The median rose 18 percent from $8,500 in 2020 to $10,000 this year. The RNA rate fell 6 percent from last year to 18.9 percent.

Texas Summer Yearling Sale Set For August 30

The Texas Thoroughbred Association and Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie have announced that the Texas Summer Yearling Sale will be held Monday, Aug. 30, at the Dallas-area track. Entries are now being accepted with a deadline of June 21.

Despite the current pandemic, last year's Texas Summer Yearling Sale resulted in an increase in gross sale receipts of more than 166 percent with approximately twice the number of horses consigned compared to the previous year. Even with the larger catalog, last year's sale posted an increase in average and median as buyers reacted positively to rising purses and breeders awards in Texas thanks to new legislation.

“Last year's sale showed how strong the Southwest market is with Texas on the rise and Oklahoma and Louisiana continuing to have solid racing and breeding programs,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “We fully expect that upward trend to continue with our upcoming 2-year-olds in training sale followed by this yearling sale.”

Last year the TTA introduced a consignor rebate program that rebates up to 50 percent of the consignment fee using funding from the passage of HB 2463, and that offer will again be in effect for this sale.

As previously announced, the TTA and Lone Star Park will hold the Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale on April 7. The breeze show will be held April 5.

Speightstown Colt Tops First Session Of Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale

Fasig-Tipton's Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale kicked off Monday at the Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky.

A colt by Grade 1 sire Speightstown (Hip 128) topped the session when sold mid-day for $165,000 to Calumet Farm from the consignment of Stuart Morris, agent (video). Speightstown is the sire of 2020 Grade/Group 1 winners Charlatan, Lady Speightspeare, Echo Town, and Mozu Superflare.

The chestnut colt is out of Royal Ancestry, dam of stakes placed winner More Royalty. Royal Ancestry is a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Awesome Humor, herself the dam of stakes winner Thetrashmanscoming. The immediate family includes Grade 1 winners Emcee and Constitution. Hip 128 was bred in Kentucky by Highclere Inc.

The session's top broodmare prospect came in the form of Shippy (Hip 166), who sold for $130,000 to St Elias Stables from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. A 4-year-old stakes-winning and graded stakes-placed daughter of Midshipman, Shippy is from the immediate family of Grade/Group 1 winners Wild Rush, Hayil, and Shalaa. Shippy won twice in seven starts for owners Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, R. A. Hill Stable, and Joseph E. Besecker and trainer George Weaver, and earned $121,400.

Additional six-figure sales included two well-bred broodmare prospects:

American Dream (Hip 306), a 4-year-old winning daughter of American Pharoah purchased for $105,000 by Board Shorts Stables from the consignment of Bridie Harrison, agent for Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds. A half-sister to graded stakes winner Dancing Solo, American Dream is out of a full sister to multiple Grade 1 winning millionaire Voodoo Dancer from the family of Grade 1 winner Pool Play.
Pakhet (Hip 62), a 5-year-old graded stakes placed winner by Cairo Price purchased for $100,000 by Peachtree Racing Stable from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Pakhet hails from the family of Group 1 winner Amadeus Wolf.

During the first session, 207 horses changed hands for a total of $3,956,300. The average was $19,113, up slightly from $18,718 during the first session in 2020. The median held steady at $8,000 compared to last year. The RNA rate was 21.5 percent, compared to 28.8% during the first session in 2020.

Session 1 results are available online. Session 2 will begin Tuesday at 10 a.m.
