OBS October Yearling Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 October Sale is now available via the OBS website at obssales.com.

The two-day sale is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 12 and 13. Supplemental entries will be accepted until Sept. 24.

The Selected Yearling Sale begins on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. with Hip No.'s 1– 135 plus supplements. The Open Yearling Sale, with 364 horses cataloged as Hip No.'s 201 – 564 plus supplements, is set for Wednesday, Oct. 13 and will begin at 11 a.m.

The sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the DRF, TDN, BloodHorse and Pastthewire websites.

Long a source of top class racehorses, the October Yearling Sale annually showcases the offspring of up and coming stallions. Horse of the Year Gun Runner and champion Classic Empire have yearlings cataloged, as does multiple Grade 1 winner Practical Joke. Other sires with first-crop runners include American Freedom, Connect, Gormley, Mohaymen and Valiant Minister.

The 2021 October Sale also features yearlings from a strong roster of freshman sires. Bolt d'Oro, Good Magic, Mendelsson and Army Mule are represented, as are Accelerate, Girvin, Oscar Performance and Tapwrit. The list also includes Always Dreaming, Awesome Slew, Bucchero, Cloud Computing, Collected, Good Samaritan, Mo Town, Mor Spirit, Sharp Azteca, Tunwoo and West Coast.

OBS graduates Goldencents and Kantharos head the roster of established sires, a group also including Frosted, Khozan, Laoban, Malibu Moon, More Than Ready, Munnings, Not This Time, Speightstown, Tiznow and Violence.

OBS will again offer online bidding during the October Sale. Buyers will be able to go to the OBS website and register to gain bidding approval, then access the OBS Bidding Screen with their credentials. The online catalog's main page contains a link to a sortable master index providing searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed.

The sortable master index has advanced search and filter capability and allows shortlist creation. A link to instructions for using these features can be found in the index header and a step by step tutorial is available in the index as well.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The app allows users to download and view the catalog, receive updates and results, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. Louisiana Yearling And Mixed Sale Catalog Now Online

The catalog for the 2021 Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana Yearling and Mixed Sale is now available online, with 114 horses on offer.

The auction will take place Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Equine Sales Facility in Opelousas, La., beginning at 11 a.m. Central.

A total of 83 yearlings are included in the catalog, which will be followed by a mixed session including 21 broodmares and 10 weanlings. All of the sale's yearlings are Louisiana-bred, while the weanlings hail from Louisiana and Arkansas.

Stallions whose first crops of yearlings are represented in the catalog include Cloud Computing, Free Drop Billy, One Liner, West Coast, Whence, and Yockey's Warrior. Stealcase has a weanling from his debut crop, as well.

Sharp Azteca Colt Leads Gains At Iowa Fall Sale

The Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association's Fall Sale posted gains in gross and average sale price on Sept. 2, led by a $34,000 colt from the first crop of Sharp Azteca.

A total of 36 yearlings changed hands at the Iowa sale for revenues of $402,350, up three percent from the previous year's edition when 48 yearlings brought $389,400. The average sale price rose 34 percent to $11,176 from $8,285, and the buyback rate finished at 10 percent compared with 28 percent in 2020.

Tom Lepic and Tim Martin purchased the sale-topper, a Sharp Azteca colt, for $34,000.

The dark bay or brown colt is the first foal out of the winning Mission Impazible mare Impazible Woman. Bred in Iowa, the colt hails from the family of Grade 2 winner Tenants Harbor and Hungarian Horse of the Year Ryan's Gift.

The colt was consigned by Clifton Farm.

This year's leading consignor was Iowa State University, with 11 horses sold for a total of $182,200. Leading the way was Molly Bye O, an Anchor Down filly who sold to Poindexter Thoroughbreds for $30,000.

Poindexter Thoroughbreds was, in turn, the sale's leading buyer, landing four horses for a combined $71,500. All four purchases came from the Iowa State consignment.

Keeneland September Sale Participants Discuss COVID-19 Preparations

The threat of COVID-19 casts a continued pall over most segments of life, and as deaths and hospitalizations continue to trend back up toward pre-vaccine levels, it has led to participants at the upcoming Keeneland September Yearling Sale to consider protection measures briefly thought to be behind us.

Thoroughbred Daily News polled Keeneland executives, as well as buyers and consignors, about their concern related to the COVID-19 surge heading into the September sale, and the level of protection measures they plan to take.

Of particular note, Keeneland president and CEO Shannon Arvin said the company has reinstated an indoor mask mandate for all employees, regardless of vaccination status. Unvaccinated employees will be required to test weekly.

Following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control, Keeneland will also strongly recommend that all sales participants wear a mask while indoors. The sales pavilion will also undergo a deep cleaning after every session, and hand sanitizing stations will be available around the property.
