U.S.-Born Broodmares Power Record Prices At Japan Select Yearling Sale

While the yearling session of 2020 Japan Racing Horse Association Select Sale started under cool weather with a little rain at Northern Horse Park on Monday, July 13, the market was hot all way through the day.

Hip 36, a Deep Impact filly by Teddy's Promise, was bought by Kieffers Co. Ltd. for 240,000,000 yen (US$2,242,991).

“I think this is the one which I shouldn't miss to buy today,” Masaaki Matsushima representing Kieffers said of the latest recruit. “As always, my dream is to win Arc de Triomphe and this is the one to aim the Arc in 2022.”

Mikio Matsunaga at Ritto Training Center will train the filly out of the winner of Grade 1 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita.

Masaaka Matsushima has kept some horses in training in Europe recently. One of them is the British-born multiple Group 1 winner Japan, trained by Aiden O'Brien, and Matsushima co-owns the Galileo colt with Coolmore partnership.

A record price at the JRHA yearling session was established when Hip 56, colt by Deep Impact out of Forever Darling, went through the ring.

The consignment from Northern Farm, out of the G2 Santa Ynez Stakes winner, was bought by Masahiro Noda's Danox Co.Ltd for 400,000,000 yen, (US$3,738,318), which surpassed the price of Last Groove, who was bought for 360,000,000 yen in 2011, and The Rest Nowhere, who was bought for 360,000,000 yen in 2019.

“I think there are two outstanding yearlings in the catalog and this is one them,” Yoshiki Okada, racing manager to Masahiro Noda, commented about the colt. “This is big strong colt, which may not be typical progeny by Deep Impact. But he is a very good mover. I visited Northern Farm to inspect yearlings for several time and he always looked fantastic. And Mr. Noda saw him yesterday and decided to buy him. I believe he stays a mile and half, and hope he will be our Derby horse.”

“While I expected high price, as several major owners are interested in this colt, I did not expect the price more than 300 million yen.” said Katsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm, the consignor of colt. “Mr. Noda visited Northern Farm yesterday and said this is the pick of day. I would like to express my sincere thanks to owners and trainers who travel to Hokkaido under the current challenging situation.”

As expected, a hot bidding war was seen for Hip 67, colt by Deep Impact and a half-brother to La Cressoniere, the unbeaten winner of French 1000 Guineas and French Oaks, bought by Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co/ Ltd/ for 220,000,000yen, (US$2,056,075). The colt is out of the unplaced Galileo mare Absolute Lady.

“Mr. Kaneko visited our barn this morning and this colt caught his fancy”, said Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Farm, the consignor of colt. “I am very happy with the price of this colt and very happy with today's market, which is stronger than I expected.”

The record price of Hip 56 lived very shortly – only for two hours – as Hip 114, a colt by Deep Impact out of Sheave, consigned by Northern Farm, was bought for 510,000,000yen, (US$4,766,356), by Tetsuhide Kunimoto.

“I am involved in ownership of racehorses for more than 35 years and I am sure this is one of the best yearlings I have ever seen,” Kunimoto said of the sales topper. “I visited Northern Farm three times to inspect yearlings and went to the barn of Northern Farm at sales ground this morning, when I am determined to buy him. Price is no object with regard to this colt and I hope his quality is as high as his price.”

Sheave, an unraced daughter of Mineshaft, is the dam of 2016 Kentucky Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia.

Kunimoto also says the colt will be trained by Tomokazu Takano, who trained Shonan Pandora, winner of Japan Cup in 2015, for Tetsuhide Kunimoto.

It is obvious that the second-to-last crop by Deep Impact boosted the market. From 13 yearlings by Deep Impact were offered, 12 of them were sold for 2,497,000,000 yen (US$23,281,187) in total and the average price was 208,083,333yen, (US$1.94 million).

On Monday, 229 lots were sold for 10,428,000,000 yen (US$97,227,161) in total, which is a 2.8 percent decline as compares with 2019. The average price, 45,537,118 yen (US$424,490), marked a 5.9 percent decline. The clearance rate was 92 percent, down slightly from 92.9 percent last year.

“This is amazing market” Katsumi Yoshida of Northern Farm, the leading consignor at the session, commented at the conclusion of first day. “I was actually worried about the market, because there were travel restrictions until June 19 in Japan and owners/trainers could not come here to inspect yearlings cataloged until then. I am very happy with the gross sale, which is the second-highest at yearling session, and am more than happy with the clearance rate, 92 percent. I would like to express my sincerely thanks to owners and trainers who supported the market.”

The foal session of the JRHA Select Sale begins Tuesday.

Bahamian Squall Filly Fastest At OBS July Sale Under Tack Finale

Hip No. 1030, a daughter of Bahamian Squall consigned by McKathan Bros. Sales, Agent, sped a quarter in :20 3/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the sixth and final session of the under tack show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 July Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age.

The dark bay or brown filly is out of Up for Grabs, by First Samurai, from the family of graded stakes winner Love That Jazz.

Hip No. 983, a son of Laoban consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, turned in the session's fastest eighth, stopping the timer in :9 4/5. The bay colt is out of One Look, by Henny Hughes, a half-sister to graded stakes placed Before You Know It.

Two horses shared honors for the fastest three-eighths, clocked in :33 flat.

Hip No. 938, a 2-year-old dark bay or brown colt by Protonico consigned by Whitman Sales LLC, Agent, is out of Mongolian Changa, by Brilliant Speed, from the family of Grade 1 winner High Yield.
Hip No. 992, Chambers Creek, a 3-year-old bay filly by Goldencents consigned by Bobby Dodd, Agent, is out of Secret Song, by Dunkirk, from the family of graded stakes placed stakes winner Honolua Storm.

Hip No. 1021, a gray or roan colt by Anchor Down consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, Agent, worked the session's only quarter in :21 flat. He's out of Solo Buena, by Half Ours, a half sister to stakes winner Ide Like a Double.

A pair of youngsters worked quarters in :21 1/5.

Hip No. 904, consigned by Ends Well, Agent, is a dark bay or brown filly by Munnings out of Medaglia d'Argento, by Medaglia d'Oro, a daughter of graded stakes winner Meribel.
Hip No. 960, a bay filly by Mshawish consigned by Six K's Training & Sales LLC, Agent, is out of Nanybelle, by Bellamy Road, a daughter of Grade 1-winning OBS graduate Nany's Sweep.

There were five eighths in :10 flat.

Hip No. 913, a chestnut filly by Congrats consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, is out of Ministrone, by Forestry, a full-sister to stakes winner Forest Attack and a half sister to champion Riboletta (BRZ).

Hip No. 1035, a bay colt by Orb consigned by All In Sales (Tony Bowling), Agent, is a half-brother to Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar out of Winning Call, by Deputy Minister.

The July Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age begins Tuesday, July 14 with Hip No's 1- 360. Hip No's 361- 720 will be offered Wednesday and Hip No.'s 721- 1114 will sell on Thursday.

Son Of Showcasing Leads Tattersalls July Sale’s Closing Session

Trade on the second and final session of the two-day Tattersalls July Sale continued in robust fashion with the clearance rate of 96 percent matching yesterday's remarkable figure.

The Tattersalls July Sale always attracts a broad cross-section of buyers from throughout the world and this year was no exception with purchasers from Australia, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Japan, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, the UAE and the U.S. all represented on the buyers sheets.

The top lot on the second day was last time out winner Pawpaw from Clive Cox's Beechdown Stables. The 3-year-old son of Showcasing was knocked down to Tattersalls marketing director Jimmy George for 62,000 guineas (US$82,192) on behalf of dual-purpose trainer Paul Webber.

“Paul has been up here all week doing the hard yards, I have just stood here and waved!” smiled George. “He should be a fun dual-purpose type for Paul.”

Pawpaw, who is out of a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Lend a Hand, won over 1 1/4 miles in June at Lingfield on his fifth career start.

Trainer Karl Burke's Wonderwork, who was owned by his wife Elaine, is bound for Dubai after being knocked down to Dubai-based assistant trainer Alessandro Marconi for 60,000 guineas (US$79,548).

“The horse has some very good form and Night Of Thunder is on fire,” said Marconi, adding: “But he comes from a very good trainer so it will be difficult to match! The horse will stay here for a couple of months and then head to Dubai.”

The 3-year-old gelding won on his debut as a 2-year-old. He has run three times this year and has won or placed on all three starts, and was offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 93.

It was an eventful few minutes for Burke whose star filly Dandalla won the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket five minutes earlier.

At the conclusion of the 2020 Tattersalls July Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“For a bloodstock sale conducted under normal circumstances to register a clearance rate in excess of 95 percent is quite an achievement. To do so in the current climate and with the prevailing government travel regulations preventing so many regular buyers from attending this week's sales is little short of phenomenal.

“There have been four COVID-affected sales which have taken place at Tattersalls in the past three weeks and the clearance rate at every one of them has exceeded 80 percent. Not for a moment are we pretending that it has been plain sailing at all these sales, but they have all exceeded expectations and have all demonstrated an extraordinary resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges and an enduring appetite for British and Irish bloodstock at all levels of the market.

“Over the two days of the Tattersalls July Sale we have sold horses to buyers from nearly 20 different countries, most of whom have had to explore unconventional ways in which to participate at the sale. Our recently introduced live internet bidding platform has added a new dimension and has been consistently used by international buyers, with many others using the telephone bidding service provided by our team on the ground. While the catalog may understandably have lacked a little of the usual quality and quantity, demand for horses in training and in particular well-bred fillies and mares has given some cause for encouragement in uncertain times. We must thank vendors and purchasers alike, all of whom have shown a determination to keep the wheels of the industry turning in the face of considerable adversity.”

Hip No. 639, a son of Ghostzapper consigned by Randy Bradshaw, Agent, turned in the session's fastest quarter, stopping the timer in :21 1/5. The bay colt is out of Excellent News, by Rahy, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Here's to You.

Hip No. 572, a daughter of Social Inclusion consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, Inc., Agent, breezed the session's fastest three-eighths, clocked in :33 1/5. The bay filly, a half sister to stakes placed For Emma, is out of stakes placed Dandy Dulce, by Dixieland Heat.

Hip No. 699, Papa Twosexyeight, a son of Anthony's Cross consigned by 30-30 Ranch, worked a half-mile in a brisk :46 3/5. The bay colt is out of Gerry's Reward, by Grand Reward, from the family of graded stakes winner Just Rushing.

Six youngsters worked quarters in :21 2/5.
