Steady Trade Produces $500,000 Karakontie Colt On Tuesday At Keeneland September Sale

Marsha Naify paid $500,000 for a colt by Karakontie to top a day of active commerce during Tuesday's ninth day of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale

Naify also acquired two fillies, one by Jimmy Creed for $35,000 and the other from the first crop of Gormley for $30,000. She the session's leading buyer with a total of three purchases for $565,000.

The $500,000 colt, consigned by Gainesway, agent, is the first foal out of the Speightstown mare Untouch, a half-sister to recent Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve third-place finisher Mr. Big News. The colt is from the family of Canadian Horse of the Year Glorious Song, Eclipse Award winner Devil's Bag and Grade 2 winner Saint Ballado.

Gainesway sold a total of 29 horses for $1,337,000 to lead consignors on Tuesday.

A total of 253 yearlings sold for $6,484,100 during the session, for an average of $25,629 and a median of $15,000. With three days remaining in the 12-day sale, Keeneland has sold a total of 1,773 horses for $230,574,800, for an average of $130,048 and a median of $60,000.

On Tuesday, Solis/Litt paid the session's second-highest price of $240,000 for a filly by Jimmy Creed out of the Malibu Moon mare On Reflection. Consigned by Woods Edge Farm, agent, she is from the family of Grade 1 winner Rutherienne and Grade 3 winners Adorable Micol, Adcat, Ruthenia and Oiseau de Feu.

D.J. Stables spent $240,000 on a colt by Speightster who is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Hotshot Anna. Consigned by Beau Lane Bloodstock, agent for Paul Tackett, he is out of the winning, stakes-placed mare Avalos, by Holy Bull.

The September Sale continues Wednesday and runs through Friday with all sessions beginning at 10 a.m.

Record Returns Continue During Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale’s Closing Session

Day two of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale was in some ways a repetition of Day 1 – the session topped again by a colt consigned from Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud, bred by her grandfather Jim Bolger (Lot 260).

The April-born New Approach colt, a full-brother to the Bolger-bred and trained New Treasure, winner of the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes, was bought by Robson Aguiar. He signed for Ebonos at £190,000 (US$242,016), purchasing on behalf of Amo Racing and trainer Roger Varian.

There was plenty of interest around the ring and underbidders included Dwayne Woods and Matt Coleman.

Consignor Clare Manning said of her two session-topping colts: “I knew the two of them were lovely individuals. Although they're quite different types, they're both extremely nice individuals in their own ways, and the updates were obviously big boosts. I thought they'd be popular but they've both completely exceeded expectations. They've both really pulled it out of the bag.

“It couldn't have gone any better really. To get one touch like that is unbelievable, never mind two.”

The other six-figure sale in the day two session was £155,000 (US$197,426) given for Lot 421, a Grove Stud-consigned colt by Night Of Thunder, also a son of New Approach.

He was one of 15 lots bought over the two days by the father and son team of Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock, the sale's leading buyer numerically and by spend. Trainer Stuart Williams was underbidder.

The two-day September Yearling Sale Part I produced a strong and a more-than-satisfactory set of results with its average of €24,145 (US$28,274) on a par with 2019, and its median of €17,582 (US$20,589) a fall of 12 percent. Four yearlings sold for £150,000 (US$191,070) or more, another record for the September Yearling Sale.

The aggregate dropped by 15 percent to €7,992,107 (US$9,359,123), but the clearance rate was a very healthy 84 percent throughout the two-day sale.

At the conclusion of the September Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Ireland CEO Matt Mitchell commented;

“The venue for the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale was new, but the fundamentals of the sale remained the same. We had a catalog of quality yearlings catering for all sectors of the market and the clearance rate of 84 percent demonstrates the enduring appeal of the sale, even in these challenging times.

“The obvious highlight was the new record top price of £325,000 (US$413,978) for Jim Bolger's outstanding Teofilo colt consigned by his granddaughter Clare Manning and we are delighted that his support of the September Yearling Sale has been so richly rewarded. The feature of the sale has, however, been the depth to the trade from start to finish. We have had a record number of lots sell for £150,000 (US$191,070) or more and buyers from throughout Britain and Ireland have been competing with a strong overseas contingent, most notably from Italy.

“Relocating the sale was not an easy decision and we would like to thank the vendors and purchasers, all of whom have contributed to the success of the past two days. The sale has displayed a remarkable resilience under the circumstances and is a tribute to the professionalism and commitment of all concerned.”

Multiple Grade 1 Winner Bast To Be Offered At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Three-time Grade 1 winner Bast, in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify, will be offered at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency will consign the 3-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo on behalf of owner Charles Chu's Baoma Corporation.

Bast is the only three-time Grade 1-winning filly of her crop in the U.S. She is also the only Grade 1 winning juvenile filly of that crop to add a graded stakes victory at three.

Trained throughout her career by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, she established herself as the West Coast's leading 2-year-old filly in 2019. Following a second-place finish in her career debut at two at Del Mar, Bast returned to the races three weeks later to break her maiden in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante by a powerful 8 3/4 lengths.

Stretching out to 1 1/16 miles for her next start in the G1 Chandelier Stakes, she went-to-wire to notch her second career Grade 1 win.

Bast would next run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Despite setting swift fractions over a tiring racetrack, she gamely held on to finish third, just two lengths behind eventual Eclipse champion British Idiom.

Bast would conclude her 2-year-old campaign with a victory in the G1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos, winning in impressive gate-to-wire fashion over an off racetrack.

Bast began her 3-year-old campaign in January, turning back in distance to seven furlongs in the G2 Santa Ynez Stakes. Despite spotting four pounds to her rivals, she delivered another effortless victory, increasing her earnings to $852,200 in what would be her final career start. All four of her career wins were in Grade 1 or graded stakes company.

“Bast's tremendous ability and gorgeous looks should make her an outstanding broodmare,” said Baffert. “I have only seen five yearling fillies at the sales that were a 'must buy' in my life, and she is one them. She is that beautiful.”

Purchased by Baffert and agent Donato Lanni on behalf of Baoma Corporation for $500,000 at Fasig-Tipton's 2018 Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale, Bast is a daughter of champion Uncle Mo. She is offered in foal to Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Justify.

Her dam Laffina, by Arch, is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Mananan McLir, and stakes winners Big Sur and Charming N Lovable. Charming N Lovable is in turn the dam of Grade 1-winning female Fault. Laffina is also a half-sister to graded stakes performer Sandra's Rose, the dam of South Bend, a stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed 3-year-old colt this year.

“Bast was a fantastic racemare,” said John G. Sikura of consignor Hill 'n' Dale. “Selected and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, in foal to Triple crown winner Justify, and by leading sire Uncle Mo. She is without fault and has everything a breeder desires – class, performance, and pedigree at the highest levels.”

Added Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning: “Bast is another tremendous racehorse campaigned by Charles and Susan Chu. Her brilliance on the racetrack and impeccable pedigree make her a broodmare with unlimited potential.”

$320,000 Not This Time Colt Paces Monday At Keeneland September Sale

Mardi Gras Time, a colt by Not This Time, sold to Donato Lanni, agent, for $320,000 to lead Monday's eighth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Stuart Morris, agent, consigned Mardi Gras Time, whose dam is the winning More Than Ready mare Ready at Nine. A half-brother to stakes-placed Drummer Boy, he is from the family of Grade 1 winner Classy Cathy.

On Monday, Keeneland sold 255 horses for $11,832,500, for an average of $46,402 and a median of $25,000. Cumulative sales are $224,099,700 for 1,520 yearlings, for an average of $147,434 and a median of $80,000.

The session's second-highest price was the $305,000 Nicoma Bloodstock, agent, paid for a filly by champion Nyquist. Candy Meadows Sales, agent, consigned the filly, who is out of the stakes-winning Northern Afleet mare Unforgotten. She is from the family of stakes winners Hot Storm, A Shin Gorgeous and Hidinginplainsight as well as Silverpocketsfull, who was third in Keeneland's Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland.

Ben McElroy, agent for Wesley Ward, purchased a colt from the first crop of Irish champion Caravaggio for $250,000. Consigned by Anderson Farm, agent, he is the first foal out of the Street Cry mare Back to Love and from the family of Grade 1 winner Over All and Irish stakes winner Sergei Prokofiev.

Taylor Made Sales Agency was Monday's leading consignor, selling 26 yearlings for $1,304,000.

The leading buyer was Woodford Thoroughbreds, which paid $395,000 for three horses.

The September Sale continues Tuesday and runs through Friday with all sessions beginning at 10 a.m.
