Honor Code’s Honor D Lady Takes Remington Park Oaks

Honor D Lady (f, 3, Honor Code–Complicated, by Blame) overtook pacesetting Ancient Peace (War Front) in deep stretch and kicked clear to score by 2 1/2 lengths in the GIII Remington Park Oaks Sunday night. The 7-1 shot sat just off the early leaders while three wide around the first turn and down the backstretch. She began to reel in Ancient Peace approaching the stretch and finally got that better of that stubborn foe in the waning strides before pulling away to the wire.

The dark bay filly, making just her second start on conventional dirt, ended her juvenile campaign with a third-place effort over the synthetic surface at Woodbine in the GIII Mazarine S. and won the Honey Ryder S. over the lawn at Gulfstream in her sophomore debut in May. Third over Gulfstream's Tapeta in the June 10 Martha Washington S., she was runner-up in the July 1 GIII Selene S. and was coming off a 10th-place effort in the Aug. 4 GIII Saratoga Oaks Invitational.

Out of Complicated, Honor D Lady is a half-sister to stakes winner Churchtown (Air Force Blue), as well as recent GI Natalma S. runner-up Simply in Front (Summer Front). She has a weanling half-sister by War Front and a yearling half-sister by Omaha Beach who sold for $750,000 at last month's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. Her third dam is multiple Grade I winner Educated Risk (Mr. Prospector).

Honor Code To Stand At Yushun Stallion Station

MGISW Honor Code (A.P. Indy) has been sold and will stand the 2024 breeding season at Yushun Stallion Station in Japan, Lane's End Farm said in a release Thursday.

The 12-year-old, who will take his place alongside notable sires such as Henny Hughes (Hennessy) will offer an outcross to the many Sunday Silence mares there.

Bred in Kentucky by Dell Ridge and campaigned by that farm along with Lane's End Racing, Honor Code entered stud at Lane's End in 2016.

“We are hopeful that on completion of his stud career Honor Code will return to Lane's End. He has provided us with so many memories.  We would love to have him back some day,” said Bill Farish of Lane's End Farm.

Medina To Open Public Stable in Kentucky

Trainer Robert “Robbie” Medina has opened a public stable based out of Lexington, KY and is now accepting new clients.

Since April 2020, Medina has served as the general manager and trainer for Blackwood Stables, the state-of-the-art training center near Lexington. At Blackwood, he focused on breaking, training, and rehabilitation for many of the sport's leading owners and trainers. He also ran horses under his own name at Kentucky tracks for a few select clients, including August Dawn Stable's Gun Runner S. winner Play Action Pass (Cairo Prince), who was selected as a yearling by Medina.

Medina will operate his stable out of the Thoroughbred Training Center on Paris Pike in Lexington, while also continuing to develop 2-year-olds at Blackwood before they are ready to graduate to the Thoroughbred Training Center.

“The last three years at Blackwood have been wonderful, but I am excited to be opening a full public stable in Kentucky,” Medina said. “I am a lifelong race tracker and have been fortunate enough to work for some tremendous horsemen and play a crucial role in the development of some the sport's best horses. The timing is right for me to devote myself full time to a public stable. I have a great staff and setup in place and am ready to grow our operation.”

Prior to taking the job at Blackwood in 2020, Medina worked for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey from 1995 to 2020, starting as a groom for McGaughey before eventually working his way up to assistant trainer. He was instrumental in the development and training of such McGaughey stars as GI Kentucky Derby winner Orb (Malibu Moon), GI Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Pleasant Home (Seeking the Gold), and multiple Grade I winners Point of Entry (Dynaformer) and Honor Code (A.P. Indy).

Medina may be contacted at (518) 441-0502 or at Robertmedinaracing@gmail.com.

2023 Mating Plans, Presented By Spendthrift: Pin Oak

With the 2023 season upon us, the TDN staff is once again sitting down with leading breeders to find out what stallions they have chosen for their mares, and why. Dana and Jim Bernhard purchased Pin Oak Stud just outside of Versailles, Kentucky late last year, inaugurating a new chapter in its storied history. Here is what Farm Manager Jeff Danford had to say about their broodmare band for 2023.

BROADWAY LADY (m, 6, Constitution–Livi Makenzie) booked to Munnings
This mare, purchased late last year, is a very attractive daughter of Constitution who happens to be a half-sister to MGSW Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile). She is from the family of Surf Cat, and the mare will visit Munnings this year. This mating has an interesting breeding connection to Holy Bull.

COMPETITVE SPEED (m, 5, Competitive Edge–Shopped Out) booked to Justify
A MGSP daughter of Competitive Edge, who was third in the GII Gulfstream Park Oaks and GII Davona Dale S. with earnings of $190,000. She just foaled a nice colt by the exciting young stallion Maxfield and will visit Justify this year.

CORE VALUES (m, 5, Honor Code–Sweet Awakening) booked to Curlin
This young daughter of Honor Code has all the breeding in the world to be a quality broodmare sire. She's a half-sister to MGSW Are You Kidding Me (Run Away and Hide), and was a SW under trainer Vicki Oliver with earnings of $222,000. We plan to have her visit Curlin this year, and this is a cross that has already produced MGISW Malathaat and MGISW Nest.

DIAMOND SPARKLES (m, 6, War Front–Diamondsandrubies) booked to Uncle Mo
A very attractive daughter of War Front from a deep family that has produced the likes of G1SW Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and her full-sister, G1SW Yesterday (Ire), is out of Diamondsandrubies. She who won the G1 Sea The Stars Pretty Polly S. at The Curragh, and is currently in foal to Quality Road. Our plan is to have her visit Uncle Mo this year.

GLITTER AND GOLD (m, 8, Bodemeister–Expo Gold) booked to Essential Quality
A winning daughter of Expo Gold, who produced the Eclipse Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Swiss Skydiver. We currently have a nice yearling filly called Cajun Curls (Curlin). Glitter and Gold is in foal to Tapit and will visit the exciting young stallion Essential Quality here in 2023.

MIND OUT (m, 6, Tapit–Kid Majic) booked to Curlin
A big and strong daughter of Tapit from the family of GISW J P's Gusto and MGISW Letruska. She is half-sister to GSW Miss Mischief, who won the Sovereign Award in 2015 for Champion Female Sprinter. The mare is currently in foal to Into Mischief, and we know that are a pair of GSW underneath the first dam by him. So, it is safe to say that this family has an affinity for Spendthrift's number one. The mare will visit Curlin this year.

QUERELLE (m, 7, Violence–Orbital Affair) booked to Tapit
A stunning GSP daughter of Violence, hails from the family of the phenomenal Seattle Meteor. Currently in foal to Constitution, she will go back to Tapit this year.

SWEET SAMI D (m, 7, First Samurai–Treaty of Kadesh) booked to Flightline
This strapping daughter of First Samurai was GSP with earnings of over $250,000. She is currently in foal to the stallion of the moment, Gun Runner. On a very similar mating that has produced some of his best runners from in-breeding to Storm Cat, you cannot argue with the success of MGISW Echo Zulu and GISW Gunite. She will visit newly-minted Horse of the Year Flightline this coming season. It's very exciting to be a part of his first book. And, you can only imagine what that is going to look like.
