Doyle, Kah Among Headline Acts For Longines IJC

Nine of the finest jockeys representing six of the world's most important racing jurisdictions will take part in the Longines International Jockeys' Championship (IJC) to be held at iconic Happy Valley Racecourse on Hong Kong Island Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Making her third appearance in the IJC, having finished second in last year's event, is England's Hollie Doyle, who set a new record for wins by a female jockey in a British calendar year in last term. The 26-year-old has put together another fine season in 2022 and earned her first victory in a European Classic when Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) won the G1 Prix de Diane Longines before adding the G1 Qatar Nassau S. for John and Thady Gosden. Doyle's husband, Tom Marquand, also jets in for the third time for the IJC.

Kah, also just 26, is the most successful female jockey in Australian history, with eight Group 1 wins to her credit and better than 1,100 victories overall. During the 2020/2021 season, Kah became the first to ride over 100 winners in a single Victorian metropolitan season, besting the record of Brett Prebble.

New Zealander James McDonald has gone close in the IJC previously, finishing second on two occasions and once third from six previous appearances. It's been another cracking season for McDonald in Australia, where his 14 Group 1 successes includes the G1 Cox Plate aboard Anamoe (Aus) (Street Boss). McDonald currently sits first in the Longines World's Best Jockey Award standings.

Zac Purton, the tearaway leader on the Hong Kong jockeys' premiership, is already a three-time winner of the IJC and its two-time defending champion. Ryan Moore has a pair of IJC trophies to his name and takes part in the world's richest event of its kind for a 16th time.

Completing the foreign-based contingent are IJC debuter Jye McNeil, currently riding on a short-term contract in Hong Kong; France's Mickael Barzalona; and Japan's Yuga Kawada, who piloted Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) to a memorable victory in last year's G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup. The three remaining spots in the field of 12 will be filled by locally based jockeys, including the second and third on the jockeys's table and the leading 'homegrown' rider as of the conclusion of racing at Happy Valley Nov. 23.

‘He Is Nicest I’ve Ever Had’ – Evans Has Hong Kong Plan For Rohaan

Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}) will head to Hong Kong after he finished a creditable fourth behind Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 British Champions Sprint, his trainer David Evans has revealed.

A kinder draw may have resulted in an even better performance from the Ascot specialist on Saturday, according to Evans, who is now concentrating on an international campaign with his stable star.

He said, “It was a bit awkward really. We didn't really know which side they were going to go and we didn't have the pace to chase.

“Adam [Kirby, jockey] got there just right to beat them, but had he been drawn on Kinross's side, while he may not have won, he'd have been second without a doubt. He has come back fine. He always does, touch wood.”

Winner of nine of his 28 races, the 4-year-old could receive an invitation to race abroad over the winter, with the Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin on Dec. 11 circled on the calendar.

Evans added, “He has an entry for Hong Kong–the entries closed today, so he is in that, but we will have to get an invite. So I don't know where he will go at the moment, it is up to the owners.

“If he got an invite to Hong Kong, it would be silly not to go. We didn't get an invite to the Breeders' Cup.”

He added, “I don't think anyone has seen the best of him. We have got the hang of him now. He is easy to train and he stands his racing exceptionally well–he has been on the go all year.

“He doesn't take a lot out of himself. He just travels into a race and then does his little spurt. He is an easy horse who has got ability. He is probably the nicest horse I've ever had and it is nice to have him. He will get there one day, I think.”

Three-Time British Champion De Sousa To Continue Career In Hong Kong

Silvestre De Sousa, crowned champion jockey in Britain three times, is set to continue his career in the saddle in Hong Kong.

De Sousa has been granted a licence by the Hong Kong Jockey Club from Aug. 20 to Feb. 20, with the season kicking off at Sha Tin on Sept. 11.

The Brazilian native has ridden 67 winners in Hong Kong previously, including the 2018 Hong Kong Cup aboard Glorious Forever (GB) (Archipenko), as well as landing the Longines International Jockeys' Championship the same year.

De Sousa said, “I am delighted to have been asked to go back out to Hong Kong for another stint. It's a brilliant place to ride and it was just too good an opportunity to turn down.

“My plans to go back out there last year were scuppered by Covid, so it will be great to get back out there again. The quality of racing in Hong Kong is second to none and it's a real honour to be part of that. I'll be heading out there later this month and look forward to the season starting in September.”

De Sousa returned to the freelance ranks in Britain this year after his retainer with King Power Racing was not renewed and he has partnered 31 winners so far this term.

Britannia Winner Thesis Bound For Hong Kong After Sale

Thesis (GB) (Kingman {GB}), the winner of the Britannia S. at Royal Ascot last month, has been sold and will race on in Hong Kong. The Roger and Harry Charlton-trained runner was previously owned by his breeder, Juddmonte. Third to subsequent G2 Queen's Vase second Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) when unveiled at Sandown last July, the colt ran second three times at Newbury, Lingfield, and Doncaster from April to June of this year prior to his Royal Ascot heroics.

Roger Charlton said, “Thesis has been sold to race in Hong Kong. We half expected it, as Britannia winners and those who finish close up are invariably sold to race there.

“Where else do you go over here? You can tell owners they will win a group race, but there are not too many of them for horses rated like him and the prize money is greater over there.

“It is a shame, but there we are. What can you do.”
