World Pool Reaches Record Turnover on Guineas Day

The Hong Kong Jockey Club's World Pool reached a record turnover of £27.1 million on G1 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket, up from £26.1 million 12 months ago. World Pool is the globe's largest commingled horse racing pool and betting operators from 28 countries enable racing fans from all over the globe to bet into one single pool.

The 2000 Guineas produced the highest turnover on the eight-race card with nearly £4.7 million bet into the race, which was won for the fourth-and likely final time as he retires at the end of this year–by World Pool ambassador Frankie Dettori on Juddmonte's Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}) for trainer Andrew Balding.

“Despite the weather Gods not playing ball at Newmarket, it was a bright start to the World Pool season in the UK and Ireland, and we were delighted to see turnover increase on 12 months ago,” Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director, Wagering Products, at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said. “It was a hugely competitive race day, with interesting action for fans all over the world, but it was Frankie who stole the show once again. As we all know, he is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, stars to ever grace this sport, so to see him win his fourth 2000 Guineas on his final ride in the race was really special.

Chaldean's groom, Chetan Singh, was awarded the prize for World Pool Moment of the Day and his name will now go into the hat for the World Pool Moment of the Year competition–along with the other 24 global Moment of the Day winners in 2023–the winner receiving a VIP trip for four to Hong Kong in 2024.

World Pool will be back for the May 20 G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury.

World Pool Returns to the UK for QIPCO 2000 Guineas Day

World Pool, the largest commingled horse racing pools created and powered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC), will return to the UK for the first time this year on Saturday for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket. It will be the first of eight UK fixtures World Pool will offer in the second quarter of the year.

All eight races on 2000 Guineas Day will be commingled, with pool betting operators from 28 countries betting into World Pool on seven different wager type–win, place, quinella, quinella place (swinger), forecast (exacta), tierce (trifecta) and treble (pick three).

World Pool will again name a Moment of the Day at Newmarket on Saturday, with the winning horse's groom collecting a cheque for HK$40,000 (£4,000) and a chance to win a VIP trip to Hong Kong if named World Pool Moment of the Year.

Turnover on 2000 Guineas Day in 2022 reached HK$257.7 million (approx. £26.1 million), up 39% from HK$185.3 million (approx. £18.8 million) the previous year.

Other World Pool Fixtures in the UK set for this year include the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury on May 20, the G1 Epsom Derby on June 3 and all five days of Royal Ascot, June 20-24.

“We couldn't be happier with the progress we have made with World Pool so far in 2023 as we prepare for the first UK event of the year, 2000 Guineas Day at Newmarket,” Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director, Wagering Products at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said. We achieved strong growth at this meeting 12 months ago and we are delighted with the field sizes, with all eight races having 11 or more runners. The combination of top-class group contests with highly competitive handicaps is a great driver for turnover and we hope to make a strong start before moving on to Newbury, Epsom and Royal Ascot.”

Saudi Cup Card Earns Highest World Pool Turnover Mark Of 2023

Saturday's Saudi Cup card earned HK$197,800,866 ($25.5m) in globally commingled turnover via pari-mutuel organisations from over 20 countries, the Hong Kong Jockey Club World Pool announced on Tuesday.

The day's showpiece, the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup, was the most bet contest on the day at HK$48,388,160 ($6.2m), higher than any race commingled at either of the first two World Pool racedays of the year in South Africa and Australia. It was won by Japan's Panthalassa (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}). Other highlights included World Pool ambassador Frankie Dettori winning the G3 Riyadh Dirt Sprint aboard Elite Power (Curlin). Yasuhiro Ikeda, the groom of Panthalassa, will receive a cheque for HK$40,000 ($5,100), as his charge's victory was selected as the World Pool Moment of the Day.

Sam Nati, Head of Comminging at the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said, “Hitting almost HK$200million on a six-race card is really positive, particularly with The Saudi Cup itself generating the highest single-race turnover of 2023 so far. The combination of good field sizes, competitive races and a great mix of horses and jockeys from across the globe made the meeting a real spectacle for punters.”

The next World Pool day is on Super Saturday, Mar. 4, in Dubai.
