Mahoning Valley Cancels Tuesday Races; Moving Card To Friday

Due to the lingering effects of winter storm Izzy, Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course in Austintown, Ohio, will be moving its live racing card scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18, to Friday, Jan. 21, with a first race post time of 12:45 p.m. ET.

In the interim, live racing is scheduled to resume Wednesday, Jan. 19, with a first race post time of 12:45 p.m. The simulcast theater will remain open for wagering on Tuesday.

Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course typically races Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with a first race post time of 12:45 p.m. and Saturday with a first race post time of 12:15 p.m.

The 2022 Winter/Spring race meet dates run Jan. 1, 2022-April 16, 2022, following the same Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday format.

Operated by Penn National Gaming, Inc., Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course is conveniently located off Ohio State Route 46 and is open 24 hours daily. The 25,000 square foot gaming facility features VLT machines and live horse racing which includes a one-mile thoroughbred racetrack featuring track-view grandstand seats and a state-of-the-art simulcast theater where patrons can wager every day on races at tracks throughout North America.

Winter Storm Forces Cancellations At Mahoning Valley, Laurel Monday

Due to winter storm Izzy, which is anticipated to bring over a foot of snow to the region, live racing on Monday, Jan. 17, at Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course has been cancelled. Live racing at the Austintown, Ohio, track is scheduled to resume Tuesday, Jan. 18, with a first race post time of 12:45 p.m. ET. The simulcast theater will remain open.

The Maryland Jockey Club canceled also Monday's special 10-race Martin Luther King Jr. holiday program due to lingering effects of a winter storm that brought snow, sleet and freezing rain to the region overnight.

Laurel, Rosecroft Raceway and the MJC OTB Network remain open for simulcasting.

Live racing is scheduled to return to Laurel with a 10-race program Thursday, Jan. 20. Race 3 is a maiden special weight for fillies and mares ages 4 and 5 sprinting 5 ½ furlongs that includes first-time starters from trainers Brittany Russell, Michael Merryman, Jose Corrales and a pair from Dale Bennett.

First race post time is 12:10 p.m.

Mahoning Valley: Thursday’s Card Features Mandatory Payouts

In a unique Thursday edition of live racing at Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, handicappers tuning in on Dec. 30 will be offered customary end of meet mandatory payouts of the Pick 4, Pick 5, and Buckeye Jackpot Pick 6 wagers.

There will be one final opportunity to take down the entire carryover of the Buckeye Jackpot Pick 6 on Wednesday, Dec. 29 which starts in Race 3 with an estimated post time of 1:40 p.m. It is a 20-cent wager with a 20 percent takeout rate. The jackpot pays out to a single ticket which correctly selects the winner of all six races.

The official carryover amounts across all wagers for Thursday's card will be available at the conclusion of live racing on Wednesday. Should the Pick 4, Pick 5, or Buckeye Jackpot Pick 6 be hit on the Wednesday race card, a mandatory distribution will still be held on Thursday using the net wagering pools generated on that day.

Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course races Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with a first race post time of 12:45pm and Saturday with a first race post time of 12:15pm. The fall race meet runs Oct. 22 – Dec. 30, 2021 with three unique cards on Friday, Oct. 22, Friday, Nov. 26, and Thursday, Dec. 30 all with a first race post time of 12:45pm. The 2022 Winter/Spring race meet dates run Jan. 1, 2022 – April 16, 2022 following the same Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday format.

Forewarned Victorious In Best of Ohio Endurance At Mahoning Valley

Forewarned captured the finale, the $100,000 Best of Ohio Endurance, against 11 Ohio-registered 3-year-olds and up rivals at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley in Youngstown, Ohio, stopping the clock in the one and one quarter mile contest in 2:06.73 with Sonny Leon riding.

Owned by the Trin-Brook Stables, the 6-year-old son of Flat Out-Fortune Play, by Five Star Day picked up career victory number nine in 42 starts. Forewarned also has seven seconds and four thirds from 43 lifetime starts and now has $687,633 in his bankroll for trainer Uriah St. Lewis. The 9-5 favorite was bred by Preston Stables.

“He broke a little slow today but I rushed him up and was able to get a good position and with the muddy trip, even though I had to use all my goggles, he got in a good spot to win the race,” said winning rider Sonny Leon.

“This horse has run in Grade 1 and Grade 3 all over the place and comes back here and gets right back to business,” said winning trainer Uriah St. Lewis.

The hard-trying Wicked Warrior was second for Ricardo Feliciano at 4-5 odds, with 50-1 longshot To Win (Angel Diaz) getting up for third.
