Hollie Doyle Keeps Ride On Breeders’ Cup-Bound The Platinum Queen 

Hollie Doyle will maintain the partnership with The Platinum Queen (Ire) as the pair bid to follow up on their brilliant Prix de l'Abbaye success with victory at the Breeders' Cup.

Oisin Orr, who joined The Platinum Queen's trainer Richard Fahey earlier this year, does most of the work with the speedster. However, Orr was unable to do the weight about the daughter of Cotai Glory (GB) in France.

With the Middleham Park Racing-owned youngster set to carry just 8st 7lb in the Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland, the Irishman will once again be forced to sit the big race out. 

Fahey told Sportinglife, “I feel sorry for Oisin as he's done so much work with The Platinum Queen at home, but he can't do the weight.

“The owners Middleham Park very much want him to have the ride when he can, but unfortunately that won't be in America.

“Hollie has done a fine job on her twice before, including when winning the Abbaye, so she knows her well.”

Trueshan Prevails In Long Distance Cup Thriller

Alan King trainee Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}–Shao Line {Fr}, by General Holme) had annexed the last two renewals of Ascot's G2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup, but had failed to find a way past Coltrane (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in last month's G2 Doncaster Cup. Having earlier run third in a thrilling edition of August's G1 Goodwood Cup, he was back at the top of his game to exact revenge on that rival and registered a hat-trick of victories in the two-mile marathon after a ding-dong tussle. Hollie Doyle was keen for a prominent pitch early and positioned the 11-8 favourite in fourth after passing the judge first time. Coming under pressure turning for home, Trueshan locked horns with Coltrane on the front end passing the quarter-mile marker and refused to buckle under a drive in the closing stages, hitting the line with a head advantage. Godolphin's Trawlerman (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) fared best of the remainder and finished three lengths adrift in third.

“The ground was right today and Trueshan had to be at his best,” the winning trainer said. “Hollie thought, with a furlong to go, she'd go and win and win well, but Coltrane was not stopping and he came back at us. He had to be right up there today to hold them off. I didn't enjoy watching it, but I'll enjoy the replay. He was in a lovely place and travelling well and, turning in, I thought we had a good chance. I'm very good friends with the Mariscottis, who own Coltrane and I thought they're going to come and do us again. I think, last time at Doncaster, he was remembering Goodwood and wouldn't let himself down. He came to challenge and he went right, he went left and he just wouldn't go forward. He had a week down at Jamie McGee's on the water treadmill, which he absolutely loves, and then we started training him for this. He's had two or three days on the treadmill after his bits of work, which just loosens him up and it's got him back. I took the view that, win, lose or draw today, I had all winter to get him back. As long as we mind him, he could be around for a few years yet. I just want a very wet June, because the one thing I'd love to run him in is the [G1] Gold Cup [at Royal Ascot].”

Doyle added, “What a horse. I am speechless to be honest. Alan King is the maker of this horse and what he has done today, on the back of his last two runs, is phenomenal. It was really rough going into that first bend. I had Wordsworth on my outside, I was caught in a pocket and it was one of them where you either kick in or get flattened. I kicked in and some people suffered as a consequence. For someone like me, I'm quite emotionally invested in the sport and days like this mean the world to me.”

Reflecting on the performance of Coltrane, trainer Andrew Balding said, “Coltrane is just so brave and tough and was beaten by a fine horse on the day.” John Gosden added, “Trawlerman has run a great race and had a lovely run. For an Ebor winner to come and mix it with the Group horses is great.”

Trueshan is the leading performer and lone stakes winner for dual scorer Shao Line (Fr) (General Holme), who has five winners to her credit and is a granddaughter of Marie de Lempire (Fr) (Faristan {GB}), herself the dam of the stakes-winning Dom Lurcy (Dom Racine {Fr}). Marie de Lempire is kin to the stakes-winning Marie d'Ivors (Fr) (Rheffic {Fr}) and the mare Herila (Fr) (Bold Lad), who in turn is the second dam of G1 Derby Italiano hero Houmayoun Fr) (Shernazar {Ire}) and three-time stakes victrix Hanzala (Akarad {Fr}), with this being the tail line of G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Altissima (Klairon {Fr}).

Cotai Glory’s The Platinum Queen Wins The Abbaye

There had been no 5-year-old mare to win the Arc until just after 4 o'clock on Sunday and no juvenile to prevail in the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp Longines since 1978, but both droughts are now officially at an end after Middleham Park Racing's The Platinum Queen (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) made it happen in the ParisLongchamp sprint.

Atoning for a heartbreaking defeat on her beloved Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the preceding G1 Prix de l'Opera Longines, Hollie Doyle made full use of Richard Fahey's dynamo's relentless pace to shake off all pressure and hold White Lavender (Ire) (Heeraat {Ire}) by a short neck, with Coeur De Pierre (Fr) (Zanzibari) a neck behind in third.

“It was never in doubt really–I thought it was a pretty dominant performance and Hollie said she idled a little bit in the last 100 yards,” Middleham Park Racing's Tom Palin said of the 7-5 favourite. “It was a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup and being a tight northerner, that's great as it means we don't need to pay the entry fee! As long as the filly comes out of it alright, then I think we'll look forward to going to America if they'll have us.”

The Platinum Queen's journey to Paris was not an easy one, with three successes in rapid times involving a juvenile course record-setting win at Goodwood July 27 before meeting Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in the G1 Nunthorpe S. at York Aug. 19. Second only to that huge talent, the bay stretched Trillium (GB) (No Nay Never) to the limit next time in the Sept. 11 G2 Flying Childers S. at Doncaster, losing out close home and while that peer flattened out next time in the Cheveley Park, The Platinum Queen emerged from that battle stronger.

Shadowing Mo Celita (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) throughout the first 1 1/2 furlongs before her natural speed saw her move on from that compatriot, she was there to be shot at as she has been throughout most of her brief career and as White Lavender loomed late, a gallant surrender would have been excusable. Despite lugging towards the rail as the line neared, the 2-year-old refused to buckle and was extending again yards after the finish.

Clifford Lee said of White Lavender, “We were a bit unlucky, because we were giving away so much weight to the winner. My horse was very brave to have run such a race because we went extremely fast.”

Coeur de Pierre's trainer Mauricio Delcher Sanchez added, “There is nothing else he could have done and he had an excellent trip through the race. We have finished third and we are happy, his year is finished now. He will go off for a break to Haras de Grandcamp, where he was born. We will hopefully have him back in April to prepare for a new season.”

The Platinum Queen, who becomes the first Group 1 winner for her second-crop sire, is the first runner for the dam Thrilled (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who is kin to the listed-placed The Gold Cheongsam (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}). The second dam is the listed-placed Fuerta Ventura (Ire) (Desert Sun {GB}), who is in turn a half to the Listed Ripon Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy winner and G2 Mill Reef S. runner-up Sir Xaar (Ire) (Xaar {GB}). From the family of the dual G1 Irish St Leger hero Oscar Schindler (Ire) (Royal Academy), Thrilled's yearling colt by Galileo Gold (GB) was a £170,000 purchase by Richard Spencer for Phil Cunningham at last month's Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, while she also has a colt foal by the same sire.

Bradsell Backed As Blackbeard Scratched From Phoenix Stakes

Aidan O'Brien will rely solely on Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) in his bid to win a record-extending 17th G1 Phoenix S. at the Curragh this afternoon after stablemate Blackbeard (Ire) (No Nay Never) was ruled out of the Saturday showpiece due to to allergies.

Last successful with Sioux Nation in 2017, O'Brien has won the Phoenix S. with George Washington, Holy Roman Emperor and Mastercraftsman in the past, and Little Big Bear is a 7-4 chance to follow in the hoofprints of those illustrious former Ballydoyle-trained stars.

However, the market is headed by impressive Coventry S. winner Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}), trained by Archie Watson and ridden by Hollie Doyle.

Unbeaten in both of his starts, Bradsell has not been seen since that memorable Royal Ascot triumph, but is rock-solid in the betting at odds of 6-5. 

The Richard Hannon-trained Persian Force (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), winner of the G2 July S. at Newmarket last month and second to Bradsell in the Coventry, also features among the five still standing for today's mouthwatering Group 1. 

Johnny Murtagh's Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), successful over the course and distance in the G2 Railway S., and the Joseph O'Brien-trained Apache Outlaw (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) completes the field.

Doyle is confident that Bradsell can maintain his unbeaten record and is backing the colt to shine at the Curragh this afternoon. 

Speaking to the Racing Post, she said, “The form of the Coventry has worked out exceptionally well, so hopefully he can take another step in the right direction.”

Doyle added, “He's unbeaten and is lightly-raced compared to the opposition, but he's very straightforward and his work has been solid up until now.”
