Martin Dwyer Appointed Second Retained Jockey to Imad Al Sagar

Martin Dwyer has been named as second retained jockey of Imad Al Sagar of Blue Diamond Stud. Hollie Doyle is first retained rider for Al Sagar.

“We are delighted to add Martin Dwyer to our team,” said Imad Al Sagar in a statement. “I look forward to working with him and envisage a fruitful partnership. Hollie Doyle remains our first jockey. However, the addition of such an experienced and Classic-winning rider such as Martin Dwyer gives us another dimension and adds further support to our team.”

Dwyer booted hom Sir Percy (GB) (Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) in the 2006 G1 Derby, as well as Casual Look in the G1 Oaks in 2003. He rode Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) to victory in the 2021 G1 Coronation Cup earlier this month.

“I am looking forward to riding for Imad Al Sagar and excited to be part of a good team,” said Dwyer. “Imad Al Sagar is breeding and racing some lovely horses and it's exciting to be riding for an owner-breeder at that level-as a jockey, that's what you strive to do.”

Al Sagar has co-owned Group 1 winners Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Authorized (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and Araafa (Ire) (Mull Of Kintyre) and stands the first-named stallion at the Irish National Stud. Blue Diamond Stud is home to 38 mares, among them Pearling (Storm Cat), the dam of Decorated Knight, and black-type producers Nouriya (GB) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and Nessina (Hennessy) to name a few.

Hollie Doyle Brings Home Her Second Royal Ascot Winner

Amtiyaz provided his jockey Hollie Doyle with a second Royal Ascot victory in the Copper Horse Stakes Handicap, the final race of day one.

The Copper Horse Handicap over a mile and six furlongs was one of six additional races to be run at Royal Ascot in 2020 and has been retained this year as part of the expanded program.

Doyle guided the 33/1 winner home for a head success over Dubious Affair, another 33/1 chance who met trouble in running. Global Storm (4/1) was best of the fancied runners a length further back in third.

Victory for Amtiyaz provided training partnership John and Thady Gosden with a first-day double after Palace Pier's success in the opening G1 Queen Anne Stakes.

Doyle said: “He has really surprised me today, this horse. He been very progressive on the all-weather, it was just a question as to whether he could step up to the plate today and he's done that.

“Every Royal Ascot winner is special, but you can't get much better than John Gosden. It was an amazing performance from Amtiyaz. He was campaigned on the all-weather in the winter and he was getting done for tactical speed.

“A galloping track today brought out more improvement. Mr. Gosden fills you with confidence and allows you to ride your own pace. I think they went an even gallop and on the incline I didn't want to gas Amtiyaz up so I left him alone.

“For a slow horse, he has a few gears and quickened up well. Amtiyaz is small but a little terrier and gives you his all, which is what you need.

“It's amazing to have another winner here. I had that winner here last year and now it's great to have another, I want more. I want one every year.

“It is huge for [owner] Imad Al Sagar as he bred this horse. It's a fantastically run operation and for him to win at Royal Ascot is obviously very important.”

Imad Al Sagar said: “I am very happy. The horse could not have got a better ride than what Hollie has done. She timed it well.

“Amtiyaz is a very genuine horse. You breed a horse and you wait months and years, and it all boils down to two minutes!”

Glen Shiel Pointing to Diamond Jubilee

Group 1 winner Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who won the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. to give regular jockey Hollie Doyle her first Group 1, is being aimed at the June 19 G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot. The 7-year-old gelding, who is trained by Archie Watson for Hambleton Racing Xxxvi & Partner most recently ran fourth in the G2 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands S. at The Curragh on May 22.

Hambleton Racing Head Racing Manager Cosmo Charlton said, “We were happy enough with that for his first run of the year. He was always going to come on a bit. Although he handles heavy ground, obviously the meeting was nearly abandoned. First time back on that ground, Hollie [Doyle] felt he'd come on for the run–and I thought he might just have been on the wrong part of the track as well.

“I think there were a combination of factors–and under a penalty first time out, it was no penalty kick. He could have got away with it, but it didn't quite pan out.

“It was very much a prep, and it's all systems go for Ascot now. He certainly handles plenty of cut, but Archie [Watson] has made it very clear that decent ground won't be a problem for him.”

Hollie Doyle and Sherbet Lemon Team Up For Oaks

Hollie Doyle and Listed Novibet Oaks Trial Fillies' S. heroine Sherbet Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid), who races for Apple Tree Stud, will team up for the June 4 G1 Cazoo Oaks at Epsom Downs.

“She's very well, and we're really looking forward to next Friday,” said former NH jockey Robert 'Choc' Thornton, who manages the Apple Tree racing and stud operation for Paul Dunkley. “She's done some work–she did a gallop on Friday and she's absolutely fine. It's just a case of keeping her ticking over for the big day.”

Doyle was aboard for the filly's maiden win in February, but was not in the irons for her next two runs, as she had commitments to owner Imad Al Sagar. Sherbet Lemon was fourth with Tom Marquand in the saddle at Wetherby in a novice on Apr. 25 and returned on May 8 to with the Listed Novibet Oaks Trial Fillies' S. at a big price under Paul Mulrennan.

“She stays and she seems quite versatile,” he said. “She won on the all-weather at Newcastle, and it was quick ground at Wetherby when she was fourth. She got no run at all, and I was actually very pleased with the way she ran that day–because she stayed on really well, and we know there were traffic problems.

“Then at the Oaks trial, the listed race at Lingfield, she was fantastic. She travelled on soft ground, and Lingfield is undulating and possibly as close as you can get to Epsom away from Epsom.”

“We'd hope we have a good each-way chance–if she could finish fourth or fifth then she'd have run very well,” he said. “My only slight concern is the possibility that we haven't got the tactical speed early–in Group 1s they go a good gallop.

“We wouldn't want her in top gear all the way, so we may have to sit and suffer at some stage early on just to find her rhythm and find her gear, and then she should be staying on at the end.”
