Frankel’s TDN Rising Star Nashwa Sparkles in Newbury’s Oaks Trial

Suddenly, it looks like the Gosdens have a quandary regarding the Oaks after Imad Al Sagar's TDN Rising Star Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) threw her hat into the ring with a sparkling display in Newbury's Listed Haras De Bouquetot Fillies' Trial S. on Saturday. With much of the space available for the Epsom Classic already taken up with the stable's Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), it may be to Chantilly that this talented individual heads for the June 19 G1 Prix de Diane so as to avoid a clash between the star fillies for now.

The latter 10 1/2-furlong test may be the way to go regardless, as she showed so much speed when breaking her maiden by 6 1/2 lengths over a mile at Haydock Apr. 23 and again here that the sharper trip will come more naturally at present. Anchored in last early by Hollie Doyle, the 5-6 favourite was finally given the command to take her rivals three out and a furlong later was in firm control at the head of affairs without a serious question being posed. Despite the sterling effort of Stay Alert (GB) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the run to the line, there was a sense that Nashwa was idling as she recorded a 1 3/4-length verdict with Mukaddamah (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) 1 1/4 lengths further behind, 11 lengths clear of the remainder.

Top-class horses seem to follow Teddy Grimthorpe around and the owner-breeder's racing manager had a new one to reflect on here. “She settled well, quickened well and galloped to the line. She has taken it in her stride in every way,” he said. “She has got options of the Oaks and the Prix de Diane, which is a very nice conundrum. I think the great thing is the way she took herself into the race and lengthened–she is a lovely-striding filly from that point of view and Hollie gets on with her well.”

Thady Gosden hinted that the Diane could be at the forefront of plans. “She posted very smart sectionals at Haydock and she is a filly we have always liked a lot,” he said. “She shows a great attitude. Obviously we were drawn wide today which was not ideal, but Hollie dropped her in and settled her very well at the back and she was very well switched off there. She picked up well in the straight and found a good turn of foot. Obviously, she will have learned from the experience today. They are two different types of horses. Emily Upjohn is a big, rangy girl, where Nashwa is a little more compact. There is Epsom or France for the Prix de Diane and she has plenty of toe, so that will be a possibility.”

Nashwa, half-sister to a yearling filly by Decorated Knight (GB), is the third of four foals and one of two scorers produced by stakes-winning G1 Prix Jean Romanet runner-up Princess Loulou (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), herself a half-sister to Listed Pomfret S. third Easy Target (Fr) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Frankel’s Nashwa Earns TDN Rising Star Tag With Daylight Romp

Imad Al Sagar's 3-year-old filly Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}) ran third contesting a hot Newmarket novices' heat over seven furlongs in her only prior start last October and illuminated Haydock's Saturday fixture with an impressive 6 1/2-length romp to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status on seasonal return in the Pendleton EBF Fillies' Novice S., going just shy of one mile. The eventual winner was reined back to employ patient tactics behind the leaders in fifth after a sharp getaway. Looming large out wide on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, the G1 Epsom Oaks entry and 13-8 favourite cruised to the front soon after and bounded clear under minimal coxing inside the final furlong to easily outclass stablemate Wonderful Times (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}) by daylight and justify her Rising Star embellishment.

“It was her first run of the season and she was a little fresh early, but Hollie [Doyle] got her into cover and, when she pulled her out and asked her the question, she quickened up nicely,” said trainer Thady Gosden. “The ground was probably a little too quick for her and I think we'd probably have to go for an Oaks trial after that performance. Owner Imad Al Sagar also bred the filly and any owner-breeder's target is the Oaks, so we'll pop her in a trial now and see where we go from there.”

Outbox Lands Amir Trophy For Watson, Doyle

A stakes winner in England and stakes-performed in France and in Sweden, Outbox (GB) (Frankel {GB}) added a stamp from Qatar to his passport for Saturday's His Highness The Amir Trophy in Doha and walked away with the lion's share of the US$1-million in prize money on offer. The Amir Trophy is one of three races contested locall that is recognized internationally as black-type eligible.

Ridden aggressively from a wide alley by Hollie Doyle, Outbox took up a pace-pressing position from second, as Qatari Gold (Lemon Drop Kid), with Tom Marquand in the irons and ostensibly in the race to set things up for 2017 winner and fellow 9-year-old stablemate Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}), was intent to lead over the very quick ground. Shadowing the front-runner's every step into the second bend, Outbox went for home 400 metres out and stayed on very gamely under energetic handling to prevail narrowly. Mutabahi (Fr) (French Fifteen {Fr}), a full-brother to last year's winner French King (GB), missed the break and endured a wide passage, but boxed on tenaciously in a luckless effort. King Power's Fox Tal (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), midfield and keen early, rallied well enough once into the clear to finish third.

Outbox made the first eight starts of his career for his breeder and Simon Crisford for a solid record of 3-2-2, but missed the entirety of the 2020 season and changed hands for 16,000gns at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale. Third to Al Aasy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G3 John Porter S. last April, he caused an upset when besting 2019 G1 St Leger hero Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the Listed Fred Archer S. at Newmarket last June and earned further group black-type when runner-up in the G3 Stockholm Cup International at Bro Park in September. Outbox was last seen finishing down the field in listed company over the Deauville all-weather in December.

Immaculately bred, Outbox is out of a Group 2-winning daughter of Group 1 winner Zomaradah (GB) (Deploy {GB}), whose legend has been cemented as the dam of the prolific Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}). Emirates Queen is the dam of the 3-year-old filly Emirates Empress (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and a yearling colt by Kingman (GB).

Euros Win Three, But Purton Defends Title In Longines IJC

European-based jockeys managed victories in three of the four races comprising Wednesday's Longines International Jockeys' Championship at Happy Valley Racecourse on Hong Kong Island, but consistency was rewarded when Zac Purton–out of luck on the evening–had the last laugh, placing in all four legs to take home the HK$500,000 (£48,558/€56,739) first prize. Currently atop the jockeys' premiership in Hong Kong, Purton was winning the IJC for a third time in five years, having taken it in 2017 and again 12 months ago. He joins Frankie Dettori and Douglas Whyte as three-time winners of the IJC.

Hollie Doyle made IJC history in 2020, becoming the first woman to win a leg of the series when booting home favored Harmony N Blessed (Aus) (Magnus {Aus}) for trainer David Hayes. Her partner, Tom Marquand, got the evening off on a winning note Wednesday–also for the Hayes yard–producing $35 (5-2) favourite Awesome Treasure (NZ) (Charm Spirit {Ire}) from a handy spot in the nick of time to earn 12 points, while Purton set a searching gallop aboard Circuit Seven (Aus) (Deep Field {Aus}) before weakening late to third (video).

Doyle, who finished in a tie for third last year, was centrestage again in the IJC, putting $209 chance (19-1) Viva Hunter (NZ) (El Roca {Aus}) on the speed from gate 12 before just holding off a late dive from Purton and Glorious Lover (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) (video) in leg two. Ryan Moore was an unlucky third astride $3.90 pick Ai One (NZ) (Shocking {NZ}).

“I thought I had been headed home,” Doyle told the HKJC notes team. “[Winning] is just as good if not better [than last year]. It's good to have a crowd here, it lifts the atmosphere and I'm blessed to have had the luck I've had. It's very special to win against the world's best jockeys and it's a huge honour for Tom and I to be asked back here.”

 

 

James McDonald has been in cracking form in Australia over the past month, riding no fewer than 10 winners during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, including the big race aboard Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}). The New Zealander, second when making his IJC debut in 2011 and third in 2014, tossed his hat into the ring in Wednesday's third leg, coming from what appeared to be a hopeless position at the midway point of the extended-mile race before knifing through late with 8-1 Invincible Missile (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) to just touch off Purton and Amazing Plus One (Ire) (Shamardal) in another rousing finish (video).

There were as many as seven chances entering the fourth and final leg of the championship, but none of the leading lights managed to strike a decisive blow, as Elon (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) came with a stinging rally from the back of the pack beneath Mickael Barzalona to post a 12-1 upset (video). It was Purton yet again on the losing end of a photo, but his runner-up effort secured the IJC on 22 points. Marquand, Doyle, McDonald and Barzalona finished in a tie for second place on 12 points.

“I came here a little bit worried about the quality of horses I was riding and knew that I was going to need things go my way and luckily I was able to get some nice runs on them and give them their chances,” Purton said. “It was a bit frustrating I kept getting beaten in those photos, but I suppose that makes for good racing and a good competition. The points added up, it's very satisfying.”

Hayes took home an HK$200,000 bonus as leading IJC trainer for his victory with Awesome Treasure and a pair of thirds to finish with 20 points, eight clear of a group of four fellow trainers on 12 points.
