Hill ‘N’ Dale and Three Chimneys Offer Elite Group of Mares at FTKNOV

Three Chimneys Farm and Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency will dissolve a partnership comprised of an elite group of mares and foals selling at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The offering includes three-time Grade I winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Guarana (Ghostzapper) in foal to Into Mischief, as well as her dam Magical World (Distorted Humor) (Hip 203), who is also in foal to that red-hot stallion.

GI Acorn S. victress Carina Mia (Malibu Moon) (Hip 252) is also part of the offering. The 'TDN Rising Star' is in foal to Uncle Mo. Blue-blooded champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) (Hip 247) also heads to Fasig in foal to Uncle Mo.

“This is a unique group of mares. All are either champions, Grade I winners or Grade I producers in foal to leading sires Into Mischief and Uncle Mo,” Hill 'n' Dale's John Sikura said. “Deep foundational pedigrees, brilliance on the racetrack and siblings by sires such as Curlin, Gun Runner and Quality Road which we retained bolster these outstanding pages. With these retained sons and daughters, we felt the time was now to enter a vibrant marketplace with a unique group with stellar resumes. The marketplace craves special and these mares are very special.”

Grade 1 Winners Guarana, Carina Mia Among ‘Special’ Joint Offerings At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Three Chimneys Farm and Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency announced Thursday a joint offering to dissolve a partnership comprised of a truly elite group of mares and foals selling at The November Sale at Fasig-Tipton.

The offering includes 3 time Grade 1 Winner Guarana in foal to Into Mischief. The daughter of Horse of the Year Ghostzapper burst onto the scene with a 14 3/4 length romp at first asking. She captured the Grade 1 Acorn in stakes record time, in only her second start, drawing off by 6, defeating Kentucky Oaks winner Serengetti Empress. She landed the second of three legs of the New York Filly Triple Tiara in the CCA Oaks in her next start. The third Grade 1 win for the Three Chimneys homebred came in the Madison at Keeneland over Mia Mischief. A model of consistency, she compiled a record of five wins and a second from six starts.

Guarana's dam, Magical World who sells as hip 203, is also the dam of Stakes Winner and Graded Stakes placed Magic Dance, as well as recent winner Beatbox, who sold as a yearling for $2 Million. Magical World sells in foal to Into Mischief as well.

Another Three Chimneys raced Grade 1 Acorn winner is Carina Mia, the millionaire daughter of Malibu Moon set a track record in her maiden win, romping by 9 3/4 lengths. She sells in foal to Uncle Mo.

A true highlight of the offering is Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and Eclipse Champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi, who sells in foal to Uncle Mo as well. The daughter of Giant's Causeway, a half sister to Omaha Beach, is out of a daughter of Broodmare of the Year Take Charge Lady.

Charlatan To Stand For $50,000 At Hill ‘N’ Dale

Multiple Grade 1 winner Charlatan will stand the 2022 breeding season at Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa for a fee of $50,000 live foal stands and nurses.

His meteoric rise to stardom began at Santa Anita in February of his three year old year where he won at first asking by 5 3/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:08.85 and receiving TDN Rising Star status. In his next start, less than 30 days later, this time at a mile, the powerful and perfectly-made son of Speightstown served notice of his raw talent with an effortless 10 1/4 length romp which landed him on the lips of every turf writer in America as one of the top colts of his crop.

His tour-de-force 6 length win at Oaklawn in the mile and an eighth Grade 1 $500,000 Arkansas Derby resulted in him being installed as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby (G1). In the year of COVID which reshuffled the racing calendar, Charlatan re-emerged in December, capping off his three year old campaign, off an 8 month layoff, with a brilliant performance in the Grade 1 Malibu at 7 furlongs, winning by 4 1/2 lengths. His final career start came in the $20 million Saudi Cup, where the heavily-favored Charlatan who made all the pace, locked horns with recent Whitney (G1) winner Knicks Go, only to be nabbed at the wire by Mishriff in an effort which many have described as a valiant performance.

“I have been looking forward to having this horse,” said John Sikura, owner of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa . “He is a brilliant physical specimen. He is by the right horse in Speightstown, and he has all the right horses in his pedigree. I think this is the most highly credentialed horse we've brought to the farm in terms of performance, pedigree, and speed; all those elements we feel are requisites of very important horses. Curlin was a very important horse – a great racehorse and Horse of the Year – but this brilliance is hard to find. Succinctly, Charlatan has everything I value in a stallion in spades.”

Charlatan retires to stud with a record of four wins and a second from 5 starts with earnings over $4 million.

‘Horse Who Gives You Everything’: Frost Or Frippery Honored As Claiming Crown Horse Of The Year

Steve Landers calls Frost Or Frippery “as hard-hitting a horse” as he's ever owned. There's no better example than the gelding's nose victory in the $75,000 Claiming Crown Kent Stirling Memorial Iron Horse. That day, the 7-year-old was shut off and had to check hard heading into the first turn, got shuffled back on the far turn, rallied to take the lead 70 yards out, then held on by mere inches.

Off that game performance and an 8-for-13 record (with four seconds) last year, Frost Or Frippery is honored as the 2020 Claiming Crown Horse of the Year, selected by the Industry Awards Committee of the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA). Frost Or Frippery will be recognized at the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's 36th annual awards dinner Sept. 11 at Hill 'n' Dale Farm at Xalapa in Paris, Ky.

“He's not the most expensive horse I've ever had, but he showed the most heart,” said Landers, a prominent Arkansas auto dealer and long-time horse owner. “That's what it's all about: a horse who gives you everything he's got.”

Landers and trainer Brad Cox claimed Frost Or Frippery for $20,000 at Oaklawn Park on April 30, 2020. He won his first four starts and seven of nine overall for those connections. The gelding raced once at Oaklawn in January and subsequently sustained a training injury. He was retired after a career that saw him go 22-12-13 in 67 starts for earnings of $381,918.

All but six of the Maryland-bred's starts came in claiming races or under starter-allowance conditions. The 1 1/16-mile Kent Stirling Memorial Iron Horse is for horses that at some point ran for an $8,000 claiming price or cheaper.

The Claiming Crown at Gulfstream Park marked the 10th track at which Frost Or Frippery competed.

“The hallmark of a good horse is one that is honest and tries every time, no matter their level,” Cox said. “Frost Or Frippery wasn't the best or the fastest, but he was as honest as they come. I'm glad the Claiming Crown rewards such horses and their owners.”

The Claiming Crown program is a partnership between the National HBPA and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). It was launched in 1999 to be the claiming horse owners' Breeders' Cup, a special event showcasing the blue-collar stalwarts that fill the majority of races in America.

“The group of horses that competed in the 2020 Claiming Crown provided a solid display of talent and class,” said Eric Hamelback, CEO of the National HBPA. “The event was designed as a means of featuring and promoting claiming-level horses while demonstrating to owners that claiming your way to success is an extremely important aspect within our industry. Frost Or Frippery exemplifies the true spirit of the Claiming Crown event, and we congratulate all the connections.”

Landers said he's touched that Frost Or Frippery is being recognized as the Claiming Crown Horse of the Year.

“Because of how tough the horse was,” Landers said. “He knew what he was doing. Didn't act stupid in the paddock, just went straight out there and did his job. It meant a lot for him to win it, because there are a lot of claiming horses in the country. That's what the Claiming Crown is about: being the best at what they do. He acted like a more-expensive horse, like high-dollar, more class-type horse than he really was. But he didn't know what his class was. He'd just go out there and win.”
