Charlatan’s First Mare Pronounced in Foal

Inventive, a multiple graded stakes-producing mare, has been pronounced in foal to Charlatan. By Dixie Union, Inventive is the dam of GI Del Mar Futurity winner Klimt.

“It's only fitting that Charlatan's first in foal mare is the dam of a Grade I winner. The mare has a wonderful pedigree, hailing from the family of GI Test S. winner Fara's Team, the dam of Breeders' Cup Classic winner Concern. She is representative of the quality book Charlatan has attracted,” said John G. Sikura, President of Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa.

Charlatan, by Speightstown, is a multiple Grade I winner with career earnings of over $4,000,000. He stands his first season at stud at Hill 'n' Dale for a $50,000 fee.

The mare, Inventive, is owned by Chris Baccari's Seclusive Farm.

A Toast to Tapit’s Jerome Winner

The well-bred Courvoisier (Tapit), a narrow maiden winner at fourth asking at the Big A last time Dec. 2, picked up 10 points for the GI Kentucky Derby while securing his second straight win in Saturday's sloppy $150,000 Jerome S.

His third and second-place finishes in his first two starts respectively set the colt up for a move forward with the addition of blinkers Oct. 27 at Delaware Park, where he was caught late going a mile and lost by a nose. Stretching out to 1 1/8 miles for his final start as a 2-year-old at Aqueduct and coming off Lasix for the first time, he came through with yet another hard-fought effort, breaking his maiden by neck.

Cutting back to a mile here, he brushed Smarten Up after the start, and was promptly passed by Cooke Creek and an intent Hagler (Tapiture) went out to lead. Out pacing the former, the 4-1 shot glued himself to the frontrunner and the pair pushed each other through a :45.78 half. Coming to the top of the stretch, Jose Ortiz had already been riding the $600,000 Keeneland November graduate through most of the far turn and the colt continued to respond as the pair powered through the foggy final yards to deliver a career high.

“Right now, it looks like [Courvoisier] has a nice affinity for Aqueduct and in four more weeks is the [GIII] Withers [S. Feb. 5] going two turns,” said trainer Kelly Breen when asked about the nine-furlong Kentucky Derby point race. “We're excited for it because it's where we were pointing him. We didn't know if we were even going to run in the Jerome because we believe he is a two-turn horse.”

Courvoisier is his champion dam's first winner and black-type horse. On the track, said dam took the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and GI Starlet before retiring for a hotly anticipated second career as a broodmare. Take Charge Brandi brought $6 million from Hill 'n' Dale at 2015 KEENOV, was a $3.2 million buyback in 2019 at the same sale, and went through the star-studded Fasig-Tipton November ring last year for $1.15 million to Three Chimneys. Take Charge Brandi's unraced Take Charge Curlin (Curlin) went for $850,000 at 2018 Keeneland September, while Best Time (Tapit) missed his reserve after the last bid came up $775,000 in 2019 at the sale. She has a 2-year-old filly by Justify named Justly, a yearling filly by Quality Road ($450,000 FTKNOV graduate), and was bred to Uncle Mo for 2022.

Mitole Colt Proves Popular at KEENOV

A colt from the first crop of champion sprinter Mitole (Eskendereya) (Hip 3154) topped the penultimate session of the Keeneland November Sale Thursday, bringing $100,000 from Rexy Bloodstock during the second of three Book 5 sessions.

Hip 3154 was consigned by Hill 'n' Dales Sales Agency on behalf of Vinny Viola's St. Elias Stables, which purchased his dam Waltzing (Candy Ride {Arg}) with this colt in utero for $37,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton February Sale. Waltzing is a half-sister to GSW Dancing Solo (Giant's Causeway) and hails from the family of MGISW Voodoo Dancer.

“We bought the mare primarily to breed to Army Mule,” said St. Elias's John Sparkman. “Usually when we buy a mare like that, we will go ahead and sell the foal if she is in foal. We thought this was a particularly nice one actually. He had a really nice back end on him and that's what buyers like. They like muscle.”

He added, “We knew this colt would sell reasonably, but we didn't expect him to be quite that high. We are very happy with it.”

Twenty-nine weanlings from Mitole's initial crop have sold thus far at Keeneland for a gross of $2.452 million and an average of $84,552.

Thursday's most expensive mare was Post Ranch (Malibu Moon) (Hip 3436), who summoned $90,000 from Gabriel Duignan's Springhouse Farm. Consigned by Eaton Sales, the 4-year-old is carrying a foal from the first crop of GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run (Hard Spun). Out of MGISP Resort (Pleasant Colony), Post Ranch is a half-sister to GSW & GISP Sightseeing (Pulpit) and GISP Sea Island (Pulpit).

A total of 289 horses changed hands Thursday for a gross of $3,931,400. The average was $13,603 and the median was $9,000 with an RNA rate of 10.53%. During the equivalent session last year, 216 Thoroughbred brought $5,697,700 with an average of $26,378 and median of $10,000. The 2020 RNA rate was pretty similar to last year at 10.37%. It is important to note when comparing statistics that during the ninth session last term, horses of racing age were sold and this year, they are being held for the final session.

Through the first nine days of the 10-day auction, 2,239 head have grossed $194,46,100. The average was $86,853 and the median was $40,000 with an RNA rate of 17.90%. At this point last year, 1,985 horses summoned $149,709,700 with an average of $75,459 and median of $28,500. The RNA rate for last term was 19.87%.

The 10th and final session of the Keeneland November Sale, which includes horses of racing age, will be held Friday at 10 a.m.

Guarana’s Dam Magical World Sells For $5.2M at FTKNOV

Some 21 hips after her Grade I-winning daughter Guarana (Ghostzapper) was hammered down for a then sales-topping $4.4 million, Magical World (Distorted Humor–Pleasant Home, by Seeking the Gold) soared past that amount and then some, eventually achieving a final bid of $5.2 million during a white-hot renewal of the Fasig-Tipton 'Night of the Stars' Tuesday in Lexington. Whisper Hill Farm's Mandy Pope signed the winning ticket on the 11-year-old mare, who was consigned by Hill 'n' Dale, agent, to dissolve a partnership with Three Chimneys. Pope indicated that she would be partnering with Three Chimneys on the mare. Adding to her appeal, hip 203 was offered in foal to Into Mischief, and the bidding raced past the $2-million mark within the first minute of activity. The bidding hung just shy of the $5-million threshold before surging past and sold after another couple of $100,000 volleys. A daughter of 2005 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff upsetter Pleasant Home, Magical World also hails from the female family of Sky Beauty and Violence.
