Multiple Grade 1 Winner Bast To Be Offered At Fasig-Tipton November Sale

Three-time Grade 1 winner Bast, in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify, will be offered at this year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency will consign the 3-year-old daughter of Uncle Mo on behalf of owner Charles Chu's Baoma Corporation.

Bast is the only three-time Grade 1-winning filly of her crop in the U.S. She is also the only Grade 1 winning juvenile filly of that crop to add a graded stakes victory at three.

Trained throughout her career by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, she established herself as the West Coast's leading 2-year-old filly in 2019. Following a second-place finish in her career debut at two at Del Mar, Bast returned to the races three weeks later to break her maiden in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante by a powerful 8 3/4 lengths.

Stretching out to 1 1/16 miles for her next start in the G1 Chandelier Stakes, she went-to-wire to notch her second career Grade 1 win.

Bast would next run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. Despite setting swift fractions over a tiring racetrack, she gamely held on to finish third, just two lengths behind eventual Eclipse champion British Idiom.

Bast would conclude her 2-year-old campaign with a victory in the G1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos, winning in impressive gate-to-wire fashion over an off racetrack.

Bast began her 3-year-old campaign in January, turning back in distance to seven furlongs in the G2 Santa Ynez Stakes. Despite spotting four pounds to her rivals, she delivered another effortless victory, increasing her earnings to $852,200 in what would be her final career start. All four of her career wins were in Grade 1 or graded stakes company.

“Bast's tremendous ability and gorgeous looks should make her an outstanding broodmare,” said Baffert. “I have only seen five yearling fillies at the sales that were a 'must buy' in my life, and she is one them. She is that beautiful.”

Purchased by Baffert and agent Donato Lanni on behalf of Baoma Corporation for $500,000 at Fasig-Tipton's 2018 Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale, Bast is a daughter of champion Uncle Mo. She is offered in foal to Triple Crown winner and Horse of the Year Justify.

Her dam Laffina, by Arch, is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Mananan McLir, and stakes winners Big Sur and Charming N Lovable. Charming N Lovable is in turn the dam of Grade 1-winning female Fault. Laffina is also a half-sister to graded stakes performer Sandra's Rose, the dam of South Bend, a stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed 3-year-old colt this year.

Sikura of consignor Hill 'n' Dale. “Selected and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, in foal to Triple crown winner Justify, and by leading sire Uncle Mo. She is without fault and has everything a breeder desires – class, performance, and pedigree at the highest levels.”

Quality Road Filly Tops First Session Of Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase At $1.5 Million

The 2020 yearling sales season kicked off on a sunny pre-autumn day Wednesday with the first session of the Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase in Lexington, Ky.

A filly by Quality Road topped the session when sold for $1.5 million to Robbie Medina, agent for Joseph Allen.

Offered as Hip 232 by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent, the filly is out of Irish One Thousand Guineas winner Marvelous. That daughter of Galileo, who has already produced a stakes winner in Fort Myers, is out of Group 2 winner You'resothrilling, a full-sister to European Horse of the Year and successful sire Giant's Causeway. Marvellous is a full-sister to Group 1 winners Gleneagles and Happily, as well as to group stakes winners Taj Mahal and Coolmore. The session-topper was bred in Kentucky by Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt.

The session's top colt was Hip 274, a son of 2019 leading sire Into Mischief, sire of this year's Kentucky Derby winner Authentic. Dr. Dermot O'Byrne purchased the top colt for $700,000 from the consignment of Denali Stud, agent. The colt is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Made You Look, out of an Unbridled's Song daughter of champion Serena's Song. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Lewis Thoroughbred Breeding.

Also sold at that price was a daughter of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin. Donato Lanni, agent for Michael Lund Petersen, purchased the filly, offered as Hip 285, from the consignment of Blue Heaven Farm. The filly is out of graded stakes winner Our Khrysty, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Bullsbay from the immediate family of Grade 1 winning millionaire Grecian Flight. The filly was bred in Kentucky by the consignor.

The session opened with an offering of preferred New York-bred yearlings. Those Empire-state breds were topped by a son of Tiznow purchased for $300,000 by Jack Knowlton of Sackatoga Stable, who purchased this year's Belmont Stakes winner Tiz the Law at the New York Bred Yearlings sale in 2018.

Offered as Hip 135 by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, the Tiznow colt is a half-brother to three stakes horses, including Grade 2 winner Bye Bye Bernie. His dam, the stakes placed Gilded Time mare Eternal Grace, is a half-sister to the dam of New York-bred graded stakes winner Control Group. Hip 135 was bred in New York by Barry R. Ostrager.

The second-highest price in the New York-bred section was Hip 71, a colt by Candy Ride purchased for $295,000 by Dr. Dermot O'Byrne from the consignment of Eaton Sales, agent. The colt is the second foal out of the unraced Any Given Saturday mare Sweet Love, a full sister to graded stakes winner Adventist and a half-sister to three other stakes winners. Hip 71 was bred in New York by Joe Fafone.

The first session grossed $27,166,000 from 172 yearlings sold. The average was $157,942 and the median was $100,000.

“Statistically, we had no expectations,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “It's impossible to know how to compare this sale to the 2019 results. What we hoped to achieve was to have a viable marketplace, to have commerce to be conducted amongst buyers and sellers, to create an environment to help restore some confidence in the marketplace and provide it some stability and foundation for the 2020 yearling sales, and we're only halfway through. I'm going to be cautious in my overall analysis at this point, but I'm very, very encouraged.

“I think anytime you start a sale, there's a little bit of trepidation, and it takes a little bit of time to find its way, to get a little confidence, and I think that was certainly the case today, but as we progressed through the day, people gained more and more confidence,” he continued. “I think people have rolled up their sleeves, both buyers and sellers, and demonstrated that the game's alive and well. Hopefully we'll have a strong day tomorrow.”

Quality Road Filly Brings Big Money at Fasig

A daughter of Quality Road ignited a fury of bidding at Newtown Paddocks Wednesday, jumping into the seven-figure range in a matter of seconds and dropping the hammer at $1.5 million, which was the highest price of the day. When the smoke cleared, it was trainer Robbie Medina left signing the ticket on Hip 232 on behalf of longtime owner and breeder Joe Allen. (Click here for our post-sale interview with Robbie Medina)

“She had the best pedigree in the book, so Joe wanted her,” said Medina, who worked as an assistant to Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey for years before taking over training duties at Blackwood Training Center. “I have known Joe for 25 years when I worked for Shug. Joe had a team here and he asked me to go look at her and she is a beautiful filly. You can’t get a better pedigree than that. There is plenty of horse there and, as you can see she is a late April foal, so there is plenty of horse still to come.”

Bred by Orpendale, Chelston & Wynatt, hip 232 is out of Group 1 winner Marvellous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is also responsible for SW & MGSP Fort Myers (War Front). Out of GSW You’resothrilling (Storm Cat)-a full-sister to Giant’s Causeway-Marvellous is a full-sister to multiple Group 1 winners Gleneagles (Ire) and Happily (Ire), as well as MGSW & GISP Taj Mahal (Ire), GSW & GISP Coolmore (Ire) and Vatican City (Ire), runner-up in this year’s G1 Irish 2000 Guineas.

“She is a wonderful, lovely filly,” said John Sikura of Hill ‘n’ Dale, who consigned the youngster. Coolmore owns the best mares in the world with the top pedigrees, so, for the long term, this is great value. Wonderful, classy filly with pedigree full of black-type, just a fantastic page that is still productive. We have a couple of really well-bred fillies, but she was the pearl of the group. For collectors like Joe Allen, who race and breed internationally at the highest level, that is what they seek. It is rare that you find those fillies, but when you do, you have to bid with authority and that’s what he did. I wish him the best of luck with a wonderful filly.”

Old Forester Colt Tops CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale

A colt by Old Forester, whose Horse of the Year son Pink Lloyd goes for a fourth consecutive victory in the GIII Vigil S. at Woodbine this Saturday, fetched a final bid of C$90,000 (US$68,977) to top Wednesday’s CTHS Canadian Premier Yearling Sale at Woodbine. Pink Lloyd, winner of 25 of his 30 career starts, was a graduate of the 2013 sale.

Consigned to the sale by Bernard McCormack’s Cara Bloodstock, the chestnut–offered as hip 15–was bred in Ontario by Whitford Bloodstock and is the latest foal from the multiple stakes-placed Holidaysatthefarm (Smarty Jones). The 12-year-old mare, already the dam of three winners from as many to race, is a half-sister to dual Grade III winner Rich In Spirit (Repriced), in turn the dam of GSW & GISP Wishing Gate (Indian Charlie) and granddam of SW and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Summering (War Front). The winning ticket was signed by John Di Scola.

A pair of offerings tied for second-dearest lot on bids of C$82,000. Hip 119, a Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales-consigned daughter of Lane’s End’s Mr Speaker from the family of Queen’s Plate and Sovereign Award winner Woodcarver (Woodman) was hammered down to Jim Menzies, while hip 136, a Langfuhr full-brother to SP Sweet Crimson and close relative to SW Will She (Wando) and MSP Sweet Grass Creek (Wando) was sold to Derek Chin, also from the Hill ‘n’ Dale draft.

A filly by Noble Mission (GB), who is a half-sister to SW Always Inthe Munny (Munnings), was led out unsold on a bid of C$100,000.

CTHS reported sales on 142 horses from 197 through the ring (27.9% RNA) and turnover of C$2,795,300. The average was C$19,685 with a median price of C$14,000. In 2019, a total of 157 horses were sold for C$3,381,400, an average of C$21,358 and a median of C$13,000. The buyback rate was 35.9%.
