Japanese Trainer Mori Sending Quartet To Breeders’ Cup

Trainer Hideyuki Mori will send four Japanese-based American-bred horses under his care to the Breeders' Cup, according to the Daily Sports newspaper, including 2-year-old colt Jasper Great (Arrogate), who became the first Japanese winner for his late sire (by Unbridled's Song) with a victory over the past weekend.

Mori has become an active buyer at American bloodstock sales and acquired Jasper Great for $200,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase. The half-brother to GISW Power Broker (Pulpit) and SW Fierce Boots (Tiznow) was sent off at debut odds of 6-1 in an 1800-meter newcomers' event at Hanshin Oct. 9 and made all the running en route to a 10-length victory. He goes in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Owner Kazuo Kato, who campaigns the 'Jasper' horses, is also set to be represented by 6-year-old Jasper Prince (Violence), a $60,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $100,000 OBS March breezer who would be making his second appearance at the Breeders' Cup. The bay argued the early pace in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland before giving way at longshot odds. Jasper Prince most recently resumed from a May layoff to defend his title in the seven-furlong Listed Enif S. at Chukyo Sept. 11 and is a candidate for the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Pingxiang (Speightstown), a $100,000 KEESEP graduate, was pre-entered for, but failed to draw into the field for last year's Sprint. The 4-year-old, winner of allowance events over seven furlongs at Tokyo in April and at Hanshin in July, could join Jasper Prince in the Dirt Mile.

Matera Sky (Speightstown) is ticketed for the Sprint, a race in which he finished eighth behind Mitole (Eskendereya) at Santa Anita in 2019. A $140,000 KEENOV weanling and $350,000 KEESEP yearling, the veteran would be making his seventh overseas start at Del Mar and has proven his mettle when pitched in against international competition. Runner-up to X Y Jet (Kantharos) after setting the pace in the 2019 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, the chestnut has finished second in both runnings of the valuable Saudi Sprint, going down by a neck to New York Central (Tapit) after appearing home free in the inaugural renewal in 2020 before being run down by Japanese-based Copano Kicking (Spring At Last) this past February.

Also expected to make the trip from Japan are Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the 2019 G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) and this year's G1 FWD QE II S. winner, for the Filly & Mare Turf; and Marche Lorraine (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) for the Distaff. Both are trained by Yoshito Yahagi.

According to reports, the horses will enter the export quarantine Oct. 21 and are scheduled to depart Tokyo's Narita Airport Oct. 29.

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for Sunday running at Kokura, Niigata and Sapporo Racecourses. HANA KIRI (c, 2, Tapit–Tamarack Bay, by Dehere) was snapped up for $325K by trainer Hideyuki Mori on behalf of owner Tsuyoshi Ono at KEESEP last fall and looks to become the eighth winner from nine to race from his GSP dam. Of the seven previous winners, four have earned full black-type, including GISW Tamarando (Bertrando), GSW turf marathoner Ward 'N Jerry (Lucky Pulpit)–third in a Del Mar optional claimer Thursday–MSW Luckarack (Lucky Pulpit) and SW U'narack (Unusual Heat). To date, the all-conquering Tapit is the sire of 37 winners from 41 starters in Japan. Mirco Demuro sees fit to ride. B-Mr & Mrs Larry D Williams (KY)

JEAN GROS (c, 2, More Than Ready–Goodbye Stranger, by Broad Brush) was acquired by John Mayer's Nursery Place for $120K carrying this full-brother to MGSW & GISP Tom's Ready at Keeneland January in 2019 and led the colt out unsold on a bid of $130K at KEESEP in 2020. Pike Racing consigned the early March foal to this year's OBSMAR sale, where he was knocked down to the aforementioned Mori for $265K after breezing in :10 flat. LA LA CHANDON (c, 3, Street Sense–Divine Praises, by Medaglia d'Oro) cost $260K at KEESEP in 2019 and is out of a full-sister to MGSW & GISP Valid and a half to GISW Malibu Prayer (Malibu Moon). The colt's third dam Lyrical Prayer (The Minstrel) produced future GISW Swagger Jack (Smart Strike) when she was 18 years of age, a decade after foaling GSW Tap Dance (Pleasant Tap). A half-sister to MGSP My Sweet Stella (Eskendereya), the bay filly is out of a half-sister to MSW & MGP Abbondanza (Alphabet Soup). Pink Kamehameha Suffers Cardiac Failure In Tokyo Stake Race

Tragic news from Japan where Saudi Derby winner Pink Kamehameha has died after reportedly suffering acute heart failure and crashing through the rails during a race at Tokyo racecourse.

In a sickening incident on the back straight, the three-year-old's jockey Hiroshi Kitamura was taken to hospital in Fuchu City after being thrown onto the road inside the track after Pink Kemehameha suddenly veered left into the inside running rail and collapsed.

The accident occurred after about two furlongs of the Grade 3 Unicorn Stakes over a mile on dirt, won by Smasher.

Pink Kamehameha is a son of Leontes, himself a son of the late King Kamehameha, the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) winner in 2004 who became one of the country's leading sires.

Representing Japan's pioneering trainer Hideyuki Mori, Pink Kamehameha won two of his nine career starts. He came to international prominence when he won the $1.5 million Saudi Derby on the Saudi Cup card in Riyadh in February, beating Steve Asmussen-trained Cowan by three-quarters of a length under Keita Tosaki.

Pink Kamehameha, who won two of his nine career starts, also ran in this year's UAE Derby, where he was tenth behind Rebel's Romance.

Renowned globetrotter Mori, who won the Prix de l'Abbaye and July Cup with Agnes World two decades ago, also landed the inaugural Saudi Derby with Full Flat, who beat Mishriff in 2020.
