Burrows Charts Options for Minzaal Before Sprint Cup Tilt

Shadwell's Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) may mark his seasonal return at Nottingham next month in advance of a potential outing in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock Park Sept. 4. The G2 Gimcrack S. winner will use either the five-furlong British Stallion Studs EBF Conditions S. Aug. 10 or the G3 Phoenix Sprint S. at the Curragh over six furlongs Aug. 8 as a stepping stone to Haydock's marquee sprint event.

Minzaal was last sighted finishing third in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket in October. Minzaal was forced to miss the first part of the 2021 season through injury.

“Minzaal is in good strong work now, but he is still carrying a good bit of weight and we need to sharpen him up now over the next couple of weeks,” trainer Owen Burrows said. “There are not a huge number of races around for horses like him, but I would like to think he would be ready in early August.”

In regard to taking the Nottingham route, he added, “He has never run over five furlongs before that might be an option to blow away the cobwebs. He is showing plenty of his old speed at home.”

While a trip to Ireland is the more high-profile option, Burrows believes that keeping Minzaal closer to home might be the better option.

“Both races slot in nicely in before the Sprint Cup and as long as it is not bottomless up at Haydock, which it can get, that is the type of race we want to be talking about,” he said. “It might be the more sensible option putting him in the box and going to Nottingham as it is not easy taking horses away at the moment.

“If we feel his first run will be needed then Nottingham would be the more favorable option.”

Minzaal is listed at 20-1 for the Betfair Sprint Cup.

“There is no pressure this year with him as he is a horse that will be staying in training as a 4-year-old,” he said. “It is nice to know we don't have to be panicking that time is of the essence with him.”

Cable Bay’s Liberty Beach Takes the Temple

Making all on her return in Saturday's G2 Temple S. at Haydock, Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) enjoyed the perfect warm-up for a second tilt at the G1 King's Stand S. in which she was third in 2020. Also third in ParisLongchamp's G1 Prix de l'Abbaye when last seen in October, the 13-8 favourite was made to pull out the stops late on by Ainsdale (GB) (Mayson {GB}) but kept finding to score by a neck as Lady In France (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) was half a length away in third. “She's very quick and has won three times first time out,” commented trainer John Quinn, who also saddled the fifth Keep Busy (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}). “The two of them are in the [June 15] King's Stand and they'll go there. She had to be tough and she dug deep–as Jason [Hart] said, nothing passed her after the line.”

Successful in the G3 Molecomb S. and runner-up in the G2 Lowther S. as a juvenile, Liberty Beach had taken the Listed Cecil Frail S. over six furlongs here only nine days before her King's Stand effort due to the compressed nature of the pre-Royal Ascot calendar last term. Also second in the G3 Sandown Sprint S. and fourth in the G2 King George S. at Goodwood before her Abbaye sign-off, she has extra time between this prep and her rematch with Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) who has had his own problems this Spring. “As you know well, it's nice to get them out and get a run into them,” Quinn added. “Anyone can only do so much at home, so to have a run into both of these is vital really. She has a lot of class and a lot of speed. She could have been unbeaten as a two-year-old. Her last run in the Abbaye was very good. She's won on good-to-firm, good, soft and heavy–both these fillies are very versatile. The two of them are very good.”

Liberty Beach's dam Flirtinaskirt (GB) (Avonbridge {GB}) is kin to three black-type performers including the G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S. winner La Rioja (GB) (Hellvelyn {GB}) and the G3 Princess Margaret S. runner-up Pastoral Girl (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}), in turn the dam of the G1 Prix Morny and G2 Mill Reef S. third Rhythm Master (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Also connected to the G2 Park Hill S.-winning stayer Eastern Aria (UAE) (Halling), Flirtinaskirt has a yearling filly by Massaat (Ire) to follow.

Laws Of Indices Possible For Sandy Lane

Group 2 winner Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}), fourth in the G3 Goffs Lacken S. at Naas on May 16, will likely make a quick return in the G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock on May 22. Successful in the G2 Railway S. as a juvenile and third in the 2020 G1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October, the Ken Condon trainee was fifth in the Listed Ballylinch Stud “Red Rocks” 2000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown in the wake of subsequent G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas victor Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) prior to his close fourth in the Lacken.

“He's got an entry for the Sandy Lane on Saturday, we're taking a look at that,” said Condon. “The ground is soft and the weather is probably going to be something similar to what we're wanting, he will have an entry there but I won't know until later in the week when I've discussed it with everybody.

“I think if he does go there it will be the [G1] Commonwealth Cup next [at Royal Ascot in June]…and he'll have an entry in the [G1] Prix Maurice de Gheest, maybe even the [G1] Prix Jean Prat.

“He'll be campaigned ambitiously, but he's a horse that's very solid and looks to be improving. He turns up, and when they always turn up you always have a chance.
