Clouds Gather Over Haydock Bonanza

Britain's prolonged dry spell could be about to end on Saturday, with various connections either beckoning the rain gods or praying the wet stays away for another action-packed afternoon. Haydock's G1 Betfair Sprint Cup has often been played out on rain-softened conditions in the past and, given the time of year it is staged, some give underfoot is to be expected but whether there will be enough moisture to alter the current quick ground remains to be seen. One who has proven form on all types of going is Shadwell's Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who had five of his opponents behind when taking Newbury's G3 Hackwood S. on good-to-firm over this six-furlong trip July 16 and who was equally at home when it was testing as he ran third in Ascot's G1 Qipco British Champions Sprint S. in October. His final three-furlong sectional of :33.05 in the Hackwood was bettered only by the mercurial but highly-talented Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}), who registered an eye-watering :10.26 penultimate split only to pay for it late and fade to fourth.

Time For Kinross To Shine?

Tried over this trip on only two occasions, Marc Chan's 'TDN Rising Star' Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) looks ideal for this type of test following his smooth win in the seven-furlong G2 City of York S. Aug 20. He had Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Rohaan in fourth and seventh respectively as he registered a personal best on fast ground there and has always looked a deeply-talented performer who is awaiting his turn. “There's no seven-furlong race before the Foret and he's in good shape, so we are inclined to run for that reason,” trainer Ralph Beckett told QIPCO British Champions Series. “It's possible he might be going forward, as the ratings suggest it was a career-best when he beat Pogo at York. We'll see.”

Power Play

Haydock's fixture gets underway with the Listed Ascendant S., with Godolphin's unbeaten Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) moving up to a mile rather than tackling the Irish colts in next Sunday's G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S. Anything other than an easy success for the 6 1/2-length Listed Pat Eddery S. winner will serve as an anti-climax and he should extend a rich spell in juvenile black-type races for Charlie Appleby after the yard's G2 Gimcrack S., Listed Stonehenge S., G3 Solario S. and G3 Prestige S. wins. He also has the impressive Goodwood and Newmarket winner Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in Kempton's G3 Sirenia S., proof of the stable's incredible strength-in-depth among its 2-year-olds.

September Send-Off For Gear Up

Another set to join the Australian exodus is Teme Valley's Aug. 4 G3 Ballyroan S. winner Gear Up (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), but first the capable Joseph O'Brien-trained 4-year-old is pitched against Mohamed Obaida's G1 Champion S. runner-up Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai {Aus}) in Kempton's G3 September S. on Saturday. “This will be his last run in Europe for some time. He'll go to Australia after this and we'll be racing him in Australia with some new partners once he's flown down there,” Teme Valley's Racing manager Richard Ryan explained. “We'd have liked to have raced him in the Caulfield Cup this year from Joseph's yard, but there was a small issue on the import restrictions which prevented us from doing that. We still had some interested parties that wanted to be involved so we decided to take that up and race him ourselves for the forthcoming year. He will probably go to Annabel Neasham. Joseph's done a fantastic job getting the horse's enthusiasm back and putting his mojo back. It's not easy with an older horse to put the want back in and Joseph seems very good at that. He won't be racing in the Melbourne Cup or the Caulfield Cup this year but next year who knows, we'll make a plan and take it from there.”

Flying High?

In the aforementioned Sirenia at Kempton, Juddmonte's 'TDN Rising Star' Flag Flying (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) takes on Mischief Magic and co. on his eagerly-awaited reappearance following his emphatic Goodwood novice success over this six-furlong trip June 5. “There has been no particular reason why he hasn't run since Goodwood,” Harry Charlton said. “He was ready to run a month ago, but he has just missed targets and subsequently we have ended up coming here. He is a beautiful mover and will love the all-weather, so I'm not worried about the switch of surface and a flat track should be better for him. He is a big trier and he wants to please.”

Ten For Moulin

Sunday's G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp has attracted 10, with Godolphin's 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace S. hero Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) looking to bounce back from his fifth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville last time Aug. 14. Al Asayl France's G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is back off a lay-off with big autumn targets ahead, while Ballydoyle's stalwart Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) bids to go one better than when second to Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) 12 months ago.

Haydock’s Sprint Cup Attracts 17

There is no concern with small field sizes in an ultra-competitive edition of Haydock's G1 Betfair Sprint Cup on Saturday, with a maximum line-up of 17 sprinters heading to post after the draw was made on Thursday. In the past 10 runnings, only Dream Of Dreams (Ire) (Dream Ahead) and G Force (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) were drawn in double figures, so connections of the leading fancies Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) would have been buoyed by seeing their runners handed low numbers for the six-furlong straight clash.

Legend Heads Strong Palmer Challenge

Sunday's G3 Goldene Peitsche winner Dubawi Legend (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been given the go-ahead to back up for the race and will be one of the pace angles breaking from stall four along with the forward-going Art Power and Naval Crown. Dr. Ali Ridha's 'TDN Rising Star' is one of a trio from Hugo Palmer's Manor House Stables alongside Chasemore Farm's G2 Greenlands S. winner Brad The Brief (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) and the G1 Commonwealth Cup runner-up Flaming Rib (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}). “It will be very special when we get a first Group 1 from Manor House, after a Group 2 winner and a Group 1 second, and I'm really looking forward to running all three of them,” the trainer told QIPCO British Champions Series. “If it rains I suspect that Brad The Brief has the best chance, but the other two are entries in a stallion-making race, so any one of the three would be wonderful.”

Explaining the absence of Brad The Brief since his career-best in the Greenlands and the Curragh May 21, Palmer added, “It was very quick ground when we were considering the Maurice De Gheest and then he was a non-runner after being declared for the City Of York. He doesn't need it soft–there was no real cut in it at The Curragh–but he doesn't want fast ground, and having waited so long I wouldn't want to go and jar him up out of frustration. Dubai Legend is amazing. He was very happy and fresh when we gave him a quiet canter on Wednesday morning and although it's a big leap from a German Group 3 we are keen to give it a go.”

Ryan Team Wait On The Weather

Last year's Sprint Cup winner Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal) is in stall 13, but has the front-running G2 King George S. scorer Khaadem (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) alongside in 12 in what should prove a fascinating encounter. Of more concern than the draw is the effect of the forecast rain, with jockey Andrea Atzeni hoping that it avoids Haydock so as not to diminish the prospect of the first dual winner since 1967. “He likes a strong pace to run at, which he should get once again, but the major key to him is the ground,” he told QIPCO British Champions Series. “We got lucky last year as it was very fast, which is just how he likes it, so ideally we don't want too much rain. I did say to Kevin earlier this year that I thought he might come good in the autumn again, and he's going to Haydock with a very similar profile to last year.”

Tasso Set For Clash

The final field for Sunday's G1 152nd Wettstar Grosser Preis von Baden was also established on Thursday, with Gestut Auenquelle's Arc hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) in line for his title defence as he limbers up for his return to ParisLongchamp in four weeks' time. Gestut Park Wiedingen's G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis winner Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) receives seven pounds weight-for-age from the Frankie Dettori-ridden 5-year-old, with Rene Piechulek forced to miss out to honour his retainer on last year's G1 Grosser Preis Von Bayern runner-up Mendocino (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) as five head to post. In a twist, Piechulek had also partnered Sammarco to success in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis with Bauyrzhan Murzabayev out of action, but that rider is back on board the 3-year-old this time.

Evans Has Haydock In Mind For Star Sprinter Rohaan

David Evans has nominated the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock as the likely next outing for his star sprinter Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}) after his excellent fourth in the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville on Sunday.

The 4-year-old bounced back from a spell in the wilderness when successfully defending his crown in the Wokingham S. at Royal Ascot in June.

After finishing a creditable fourth in a Group 3 at Newbury, Rohaan proved he still has what it takes to be a force to be reckoned with at the highest level at Deauville, with Evans of the opinion that he could have even finished closer to the winner Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}).

“I think he probably had the worst draw and there wasn't enough pace for him. Other than that he ran exceptionally well,” said Evans.

“It was difficult for Adam [Kirby, jockey]. He was waiting to go through them and the gap closed, so he had to pull out. He gave him a good ride and he ran a good race.

“He was probably a little bit unlucky, but I always thought he was good enough and he is good enough. He's got a brilliant turn of foot when he switches on and it's just about using it at the right time.”

Rohaan holds an entry in the G2 Sky Bet City Of York S. over seven furlongs on Aug. 20, but is more likely to wait for Haydock, where he won the Sandy Lane S. last season.

Evans added, “I think we'll probably go to Haydock. He's in at York, but it's a bit close and Haydock is a bit close to that and he likes Haydock.

“He's not far away and I think he'll get better. He goes on any ground as well, so we have no worries on that score.

“It's nice to see him being a bit more consistent. We thought he had everything last year and he just went to pieces.”
