Son Of Aclaim A New TDN Rising Star

There must be something in the air at Haydock this month as Opulence Thoroughbreds and Teme Valley's newcomer Purosangue (GB) (Aclaim {Ire}–Avon Breeze {GB}, by Avonbridge {GB}) became the second TDN Rising Star on Thursday's evening fixture and the third in the last three meetings at the Merseyside venue. Unleashed by Andrew Balding having brought enough attention at April's Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale to fetch £125,000, the 5-1 shot proved a handful for Ray Dawson going to post and in the early stages before establishing a lead before halfway in the five-furlong British Stallion Studs EBF Novice S.

When Dawson got serious a furlong out, the relative of the Listed Rose Bowl S. winner Saigon (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) showed his true mettle to surge to a four-length success from the Karl Burke-trained Instant Recall (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), with half a length back to All Is Fair (Ire) (Soldier's Call {GB}) from the David Loughnane stable. “It's a shame that Royal Ascot is next week,” Dawson said of Aclaim's second TDN Rising Star, after Cachet (Ire) who achieved fame as last year's G1 1000 Guineas heroine.

Pedigree Notes
The dam Avon Breeze may not have made it to black-type level, but she won 10 of her 52 starts in the North of England from five to six furlongs and achieved an official rating of 92. Purosangue is only her second runner, while her yearling colt by Eqtidaar (Ire) was sold for 22,000gns to Hegarty Bloodstock at the Tatts December Foal Sale. The family's most notable performers under the first three dams are the aforementioned Saigon, who was also runner-up in the G3 Horris Hill S. and third in the G2 Mill Reef S., and Tabaret (GB) (Bertolini) who took the Listed Roses S. and was third in the Listed Windsor Castle S.

Kodiac Filly A New TDN Rising Star

Hot property at 1-3 for Thursday's Broad Oak Fillies' Novice S. at Haydock, Godolphin's Star Of Mystery (GB) (Kodiac {GB}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) made even those odds look generous as she registered a TDN Rising Star performance when breaking her maiden by 11 lengths. Having met a potentially top-class peer in the Crisfords' Carla's Way (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) on debut over nearly 6 1/2-furlongs at Doncaster 12 days previously, the Charlie Appleby-trained half-sister to Dark Angel's GI Summer S. winner Mysterious Night (Ire) and GI Just a Game S. and GI Diana S. heroine Althiqa (GB) looked to have a soft touch here if repeating that form and did so in style under James Doyle.

Keen initially behind the leading pair, the homebred tanked her way to the front at the halfway mark of the six-furlong trip and powered clear with the rail to guide her. The James Ferguson-trained debutante Royal Elysian (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) won the race for second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of the Karl Burke-trained Out Of Line (GB) (Showcasing {GB}). “She ran a nice race on debut and the winner of that race set a decent standard, I thought,” the winning rider said. “It was testament to this filly that she got so close to her and she was green as well. She looks at everything, so I was keen to get her back and my tack shifted back so it wasn't a great first couple of furlongs but she picked up well and there is plenty of improvement to come.”

Pedigree Notes
Star Of Mystery is TDN Rising Star number six for Kodiac, with this year's 2000 Guineas runner-up Hi Royal (Ire) and past G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Fairyland (Ire) the pick. She is the fifth foal out of Mistrusting, who took the Listed Boadicea Fillies S. before providing the operation with the two Dark Angel luminaries who have racked up six black-type and graded-stakes wins between them including their three at the highest level. The second dam is the G2 Cherry Hinton S. winner Misheer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who was also second in the G1 Cheveley Park S. Like Althiqa's first foal born this year, Mistrusting's yearling colt is by the operation's powerhouse Dubawi (Ire).

Showcasing’s Dramatised Parlays Breeders’ Cup Second To Temple Payday

One of the premier sprints on the calendar, Haydock's G2 Betfred Temple S. went to the Clipper Logistics-owned Dramatised (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}–Katie's Diamond {Fr}, by Turtle Bowl {Ire}), who was just ahead of Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}) at the line.

The 4-1 crowd's pick received weight from each of her rivals, and the in-form William Buick kept his filly within shouting distance of the vanguard, as Live In The Dream (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) set the pace from the bell. Travelling well into the race, the 'TDN Rising Star' needed a gap to open at a critical juncture, but once it did, she stormed up the fence and confronted the long-time leader, as Equilateral flashed home to the left of Live In The Dream. The weight told on that rival, who grudgingly gave way, and Dramatised crossed the line a length to the good of Equilateral, who was, in turn, a half-length in front of Live In The Dream.

Trainer Karl Burke was pleased with the outcome and said, “You'd have to give her nine and a half out of 10 for that, there is a little bit of improvement to come out of her. William said she was a little bit rusty and when he asked her to quicken up she took 100 yards to really get into gear, but you have to be impressed.

“I've yet to watch the replay, but the rail was always going to be an advantage. We knew Live In The Dream was going to be up there, so the plan was just to tag onto that. William rode his luck a little bit, but he said there was always room to force his way through, so it was brilliant.

“She'll now go for the [G1] King's Stand S., which is going to be a tough task with the Australian horses coming over. After that the [G1] Nunthorpe [S.] will be on her radar too and a return trip to the Breeders' Cup–we'll work back from America.

“William has never sat on her before and he said she took a little while to get going, but he thinks she'll sharpen up for that. Danny [Tudhope] couldn't do the weight today (08-09), but he'll do it at Ascot.

“The owner [Steve Parkin] is over in Monaco enjoying the Grand Prix this weekend, I got a few videos of a party last night and I'd say they'll be partying again tonight!”

William Buick told ITV Racing, “She was so professional all throughout–she was really relaxed beforehand and Karl and all the team have done a great job with her over the winter.

“Even with the weight that they get, it's never easy taking on older sprinters but she was top class last year and it looks like it is going to carry on this year.”

Last seen running an agonising second to Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) in the GI Breeders' Jup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland in November, the Branton Court Stud-bred filly was named a Rising Star after romping by four lengths at Newmarket on debut last April, before adding the G2 Queen Mary S. in good style at Royal Ascot in June. Fifth in the G2 Lowther S. tried beyond five furlongs for the first time, the Temple was her 3-year-old bow.

 Pedigree Notes

One of 64 stakes winners and 33 group winners for Whitsbury Manor Stud's Showcasing, Dramatised is from the same crop as G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Belbek (Fr). One of eight stakes winners for Turtle Bowl as a broodmare sire, the filly is his leading runner, alongside fellow Group 2 winners Port Guillaume (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) and Atomic Jones (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

The third foal out of the stakes winner Katie's Diamond, who was third in the G3 Prix du Calvados, Dramatised has a juvenile half-sister named Dancing Jewel (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) and a yearling half-brother by Pinatubo (Ire). This is the extended family of two-time American graded winner Quattroelle (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), and the G3 Prix Miesque heroine Aquatinta (Ger) (Samum {Ger}).

No Nay Never’s Little Big Bear Rattles Home An Easy Winner Of The Sandy Lane

Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Westerberg's Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never–Adventure Seeker {Fr}, by Bering {GB}) overraced and encountered a rough journey when well back in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas at the beginning of the month, but on livelier ground over Haydock's straight course, the even-money favourite ran out an open-length winner of the one-mile G2 Betfred Nifty Fifty Sandy Lane S. on Saturday.

Always forwardly placed against the fence as last year's G2 Coventry S. hero and G3 Commonwealth Cup Trial S. third Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) set the pace, the 2022 G1 Phoenix S. hero took over at the furlong grounds and surged away to a visually pleasing 1 1/4-length victory. Multiple listed winner Shouldvebeenaring (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) closed with promise to take second and Bradsell reported home third, eight lengths back.

Deputising for Ryan Moore who won the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas aboard Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) at the Curragh later in the day, Frankie Dettori was picking up his second win on the card, after guiding Covey (GB) (Frankel (GB)}) to victory in the Betfred Silver Bowl H. one race prior. It was the first victory at Haydock for Aidan O'Brien.

“In fairness, they booked me about 10 days ago,” said the Italian, who is retiring at the end of the year. “I thought I could have been in Ireland for the Guineas but things didn't materialise, so I was straight on the phone to say that I'd go to Haydock.

“He was the champion 2-year-old last year and the 2000 Guineas proved too far for him, but he won in good style today. He quickened up well for hands and heels and it's a big boost for the Commonwealth [Cup at Royal Ascot in June].

“I'll be honest, I eased up in the last few yards as the job was done, that was a good performance ahead of next month. He's got big figures in the book and he's come back to his best today–he'll be a big favourite.

“I don't think Ryan [Moore] is going to give me this one [ride]! I was very pleased to ride him today and wish him all the best.”

Before his Guineas hiccup, Little Big Bear was named a Rising Star at second asking at Naas last May, and sped to successive victories in the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot, the Curragh's G3 Anglesey S., and the G1 Phoenix S., prior to being shelved for the rest of the campaign due to a setback.

Pedigree Notes

Coolmore Stud's No Nay Never has 49 stakes winners (28 group) to his credit. Little Big Bear is one of seven Group 1 winners. Little Big Bear shares damsire Bering with star stayer Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), and the duo belong to a 73-strong clutch of stakes winners.

The stakes-winning Adventure Seeker was second in the G3 Prix Cleopatre, and hit black-type pay dirt with her first foal, Andrea Mantegna (Giant's Causeway), who ran second in the G3 Hobart Cup in Australia. The Sandy Lane winner is her seventh, and she has colts by No Nay Never born in 2021 and 2022 still to come. Third dam All Along (Fr) (Targowice) was a champion in both the U.S. and France, and won the 1983 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
